View Full Version : Still Life: Rings
Escargot 08-07-2002, 12:20 PM It's based on a photograph.
The modelling was done with Lightwave & Maya, which I used both apps' unique features. The decos were first drawn in Illustrator, then brought into Lightwave & Maya as templates. They were all built in poly, then converted to sub-div, then back to poly before render. Final poly-count 330,000.
Rendering was done in Maya with rayDiffuse.
It took me about 3 weeks to complete.
Hope you all like it. Comments welcome.

Hey Escargot,
nice one! the rings look very photorealistic, so you might want to change the ground so that it matches the quality of the rest.
maybe you could achieve that by giving it a more fabric-like material and adding some dof - just some thoughts!
so keep up that great work!
WOW:applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: amazing, i like it a lot

Great Modeling, i really like it:thumbsup: ,
---BUT, I think it would look more photorealistic, like everyone is saying, if the floor looked better. i would also reccomend you put some kind of environment so the rings can reflect it. (howabout some caustics!!)
Great Job tho!!

How did you do those amazing looking diamonds on the ring?
Just a texture?(Coz they´re not sparkling.)

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. Attached is the original photograph. As you can see, I did make a few mistakes there.
I did use DOF in the render, at f16, cos that's how I would actually shoot it.
I did not use caustics, because the scene was softly lit and there is no caustic effect in the original photograph.
RayDiffuse v1.0 is a free plugin for Maya which can be downloaded from http://www.lightengine3d.com
The diamond was generated with the Lightwave's built-in Gem Tool, then modified to approximately match the proportion of an actual brilliant cut diamond. Then I just turned on the raytracing at a high depth value and let the light dance.

Very nice models!
But I think you need to work a bit on the shading. Compair it to the gold on the photograph. You gold is a bit dull. As Neil mentions on his site "A wise man said reflections only look as good as the environment the object is reflecting.".
Sometimes faking the enviroment that is there is an easy thing to do. I don't know much about maya shading, but in 3dsmax you have a enviroment mapping channel. I tend to put in a sperical mapped hdri map in there. I did this gold material test that I rendered in Brazil. I know it isn't perfect, but the setup time wasn't long.

I should tone the green down a bit. But you can see the enviroment map helps.
ps. I'm having a bit problems with my site these days, so if the pic doesn't show, just refresh later and it will properly show just fine.
I agree with mlykke. Comparing your render to the photo, I think you've underdone the reflections and it noticeably detracts from the realism . An hdri environment and a bit of fresnel effect might help, as long as the ground plane still gets reflected too.
Neverthless, a damned fine piece of work:applause:

Very realistic material. Really looks like gold, like worth gold. With big density and big mass. It looks hard.
Mlykke's picture looks good, but this gold is a bit cheaper, if it could be told so... :)
The only thing missing is caustics...
