Student as in always learning, not as in getting cheap software. Bummer.
I thought at the time Studio was more than I needed, but if I'm going to do the career change thing and stick to it, in the long run, going studio would pay off. Apparently I was wrong.

all businesses require investment to get started...
machinery, buildings, vehicles, educations, signage, marketing, employees, raw materials, etc.
most businesses are WAY more expensive to start than a freelance design biz - software is CHEAP compared to the money you can make with it.
If you think $1600 to gain a major money generating tool for your new business is out of line, the problem here is not with the price of software, it is with your readiness to start a business.

Those australian prices seem to compare directly with the US and UK prices.

Jono -
You may want to try Adimex (www.adimex.com.au (http://www.adimex.com.au)). The upgrade prices on their website are as follows:
R8.x to R9 - $510
R8.x XL to R9 XL - $1010
R8.x Studio Bundle to R9 Bundle - $1520
Not much difference but $50-$150 saving is better than nothing. They also have prices to upgrade individual modules if that's any help. I bought R8 from them a while back and was happy with service.
Cheers,
Al

yes, they do compare directly.
Note that it is closer to 1200 inc. GST if you already have the Sketch module.
I'm personally putting off upgrading until I know that darf/core is going to update loco and jenna for R9 (hopefully with no fee for exisiting users).

The initial investment is actually $6,600 for the studio bundle.

I don't know where you are getting $6600 from - but the price to buy the studio bundle in the US $2500. This is a very affordable tool to start a US biz.
Add in the Adobe Creative Suite for $1200, and a $4000 computer, and your at just under $8000 to have everything you need to make $30,000 - $90,000 or more per year.
I'll tell my landscaper friend who is trying to figure out a way to buy a $35,000 bobcat, to put on his $4000 trailer and hook it up to his $28,000 used truck that I'm mad that my software upgrade is $550.

He is pretty much correct, the R9 studio bundle is $6,050aus (incl gst) and considering that $2500us is equivalent to $3,593aus , the markup seems quite harsh to say the least. This is why I always prefer to buy and upgrade my software online (Zbrush, Silo, MotionBuilder, Vegas, etc) because you avoid the horrid distributor markups.
Considering I paid a bit over $1000aus for Cinema 8 core and then upgraded to 8.5, paying over half of the price (of the original package)for an upgrade just seems wrong. Makes even Adobe upgrades seem reasonable (my recent AE upgrade from 5.5 to 6.5 was less than a third of what I paid for the package originally). A quarter to a third of the outright price of an app for an upgrade is reasonable, but to pay over half?....hmmm
Anyway, just my two cents of wingeing, not that any of it makes a difference. Just wished that Maxon would sell directly online. For example Sony(former Sonic Foundry products) sells their upgrades online as well as through a local distributor, so you get the best of both worlds. And of course this means that the local guy isn't gonna add a huge markup, since it would be suicide for him....

Rob at Smarttec is able to offer the XL upgrade for $1040 including GST. A bit cheaper, anyway. He didn't have pricing for other configurations at hand but would be worth talking to regarding these.
Contact details are at:
http://www.smarttec.com.au (http://www.smarttec.com.au/)
seems to me that german pricing for cinema4d are cheaper:
899 € from c4d 8 studio to 9 studio
1799 € from R8 XL to R9 Studio
2799 € from R8 Base to R9 Studio
2299 € from ART, XL6 or XL7 to R9 Studio
Base Upgrade R8 to R9 is 299 €
Studio Bundle R9 is 3249 €
€ - $ is 1,212
so the studio bundle r9 in germany is about 3937,79 dollars

When comparing prices, please do remember to take exchange rates and the inclusion of local taxes (which can be higher than 20%) into account.
