I'm guessing that's a standard sphere. Would it pucker less top and bottom if you used an Icosahedron or Hexahedron?

basically for all of these I had color, transparency, and displacement channels on
last one in the link uses rust surface in the texture tab in the displacement channel. THen I play with the height settings and fresnel in the color channel. Subd was set to 3 since at work I have a dinosaur system. At home I set it to 6 and it goes pretty quick.
