WOW! REALLY IMPRESSIVE WORK, NICE FACE EXPRESSION AND TEXTURING. CONGRATULATIONS. :applause:

the shaders are really good, very realistic

but her ear looks odd, really big and out of place; her hands are realy strange, the fingers are too long and the maps make them look old [the bumps are too strong and the colors doesn't match wit the ones on her face] and for last the tomato, it doesn't look like a tomato, it's not red or wet enough.

her expression is really good, it's really easy to see what she's thinking

great work =]

Fantastic. I think the textures on the hands are correct for a baby, but make her face wetter around the tomato and make the tomato look more recognizable. If it wasn't in the title of your post, I would have guessed the object she's eating is a piece of raw meat.
Did you work trying to match a photograph?

Awesome, that looks really good, however i think there's sth with the fingers they look more like from old human than a child, and that wet tomato look would definately help here a lot !
Anyway great work.

Yes the ear has problems.

The sweater is photoshopped?

love the expression.

The hands and the sweater are especially good.
I have an irrational dislike of (unprocessed) tomatoes though, so the image makes me feel a bit uneasy :scream:

While I agree that the ear is too far back, I believe that the hands are spot on. Children do have wrinkly little hands (as if there whas too much skin on them). I really love this piece. Congratulations.

Lovely work :) Her face expression is really something... * Don't know if you used (in case you did!) a photo as a ref... although the ear doesn't look "in place" and the tomato doesn't look quite "redish"... it could b like that... don't know... only you can give some answers... anyway... I like it

The cloths, eyes and skin rock ! Great work. Avery nice subject also. Nice to have something difrent. Just a little C+C, rather small things. but the bumps on the back of the chare or what ever it is.. thoughs could be easaly modeled, and look much better. With that kind of light in the sean I would think the little bit of shadow from the rimb of the hat would be a little less sharp.

Thumbs up !

Very nice polywork and great and original piece.
The hands are a bit scary though and maybe they are too pointy?
Also the ear seems to be positioned a tad too far back on her head.
However these small issues will in no way endanger your frontpage.

Congrats.

The texture detailing on the woolen surface is amazing.did you had real reference image or it was from imagination? if it was from imagination then this image is one of the most realistic imagery i have so far witnessed its just too good.
for hair wht u used and on the woolen surface there is a thin fibre comming out from back wht kind of fur technique you applied in 3d studio max.

Congradulations Hwx. Very nice -- so nice that I am inspired to take time from my very busy schedule and give you some feedback for improving your work even further.

The texturing and lighting are what really make this image work. However there are a nubmer of ways you can dramatically improve it:

You need to become famillar with three things - sub surface scattering, image probe lighting (HDRI and preferably Spherical Harmonics) and correct gamma control in the rendering process. Here are a list of observations in no particular order:

Note the skin of the hand looks old for a baby (although the texturing is excellent). This is due to the absence of sub surface scattering. One of the things sub surface scattering will do is smooth out bump detail. You will also get a lot of red cast in the shadow areas between the fingers.

The ear and the inside of the nostrils will alse benefit a lot from sub surface scattering -- they should have a very red cast from light scattering through the skin.

Note the bump detail showing the the right cheek in glancing light -- this bump detail would not be seen with sub surface scattering which would make the skin look much younger and smoother.

The deeper shadows are desaturated -- this is a very common problem with 3D rendering and comes mostly from poor tone mapping and gamma control within the rendering process. You need to have real lights with correct gamma responses and correct gamma curves for all your textures to correct this problem. Unfortunatly this level of control is neither easy or well supported in most software (we are relasing a set of mental ray shaders for free that includes an exposure map control for max materials).
In short you should use gamma to darken shadow areas as this will preserve saturation.

Deep shadow areas again -- aspecially inside the left cuff and the neck line -- sub surface scattering would cast a lot of scattered light in these areas -- scattered light comming through the clothing and skin.

First bounce colour casting -- It looks like you do have ambient occlusion going here. Addition of first bounce GI will add quite a bit of missing light to the deeper shadow areas.

HDRI lighting probe -- You would get a significant improvement by doing diffuse lighting with a HDRI probe (we are beta testing the mental ray shader set that includes spherical harmonics for doing HDRI diffuse lighting in an optimal way -- these will be released as shareware real soon). This will add a subtle level of real life complexity to the image.

Uh -- got to get back to running everything now.

again - a really great image that could be improved out of sight with even more attention to lighting and shading. You should enter this image for EXPOS'E 3 -- www.ballisticpublishing.com/bsw (http://www.ballisticpublishing.com/bsw)

Awesome image.

I'm going to have to disagree with everyone on the hands though.
I think they don't look realistic at all. Not for a baby.
A baby's hand are wrinkly yes. But fat wrinkles, not like a 90yr old woman.
The wrinkles on those hands look aged, old, weathered.

So thank you for giving me these precious advises and encouragement using you valuable time. I read your advices carefully for several times and will modify the works later.

Any more, would you mind to explain further about the using of gamma curves、gamma control in the rendering process? Thanks a lot!

to me it seems like the shadow on her cheek is too sharp. the lighting overall is very soft, but then you have the hard defined shadow on her face... and that just doesn't look right to me.

other than that, the ear... but lots of people have mentioned that already.

great work though.

Best wishes,

HWXQuickly: you should have individual exposure control on every texture and light (image based lights). Using gamma to lighten and darken textures rather than simple multipliers.

Unfortunatly most 3D systems only provide global gamma control for reading bitmaps and rendering output.

I don't have tiem to go into the theory here but it takes a lot of attention to technical processing details to hold onto (and cotrol) saturation in lowlights.

Altough I have to agree with the others that the shadow seems a little too sharp, it really seems a perfect job, you are very talented artist.
