Hi, I have been working on a concept model of the McLaren F1 LM for my first project, it is not an exact replica but I am trying to make it recognizable to all. The problem I am having is that my surfaces are never smooth throughout the entire body part of the car no matter how much i mess aroudn with the vertices. I am using smooth lines in 3ds max 6. Does anyone have any advise for smoothing the surfaces? I dont know if i told you everything needed or even ask a relevant question but if anyone understands and helps, thanks. BTW I am only 4 weeks old to 3d and went right into spline modeling about 2 1/2 weeks ago.

Spline cv's usually come with bias handles to adjust the surface and/or options to make them corner or smooth shaped.

You should at least give a try to polygons and subdivision surfaces.

Is there a particular reason that you need splines for?(personal, client)

I picked splines because that was the simplest method of moedeling something from blueprints and refrence pictures when I started. Subdivisions doesnt sound bad from what I heard from it but I have to look more into that since i dont even know how to make a sub-D surface, I think Ill go look into it now, thanks for the recommendation.

If you don't want to start over, there's alway the option of converting your existing spline network into a polygon mesh(according it has a surface from all splines).

Right click and choose Convert|Editable poly/mesh,you can continue editing and check how it looks like with a meshmooth modifier or the one built in the edit poly.

I converted my model to poly and mesh and mesh seems more like the way to go but applying the meshsmooth modifier made the model look kind of like a bunch of squares and rectangles for a surface. Ive been working with splines for to long, I have no idea how to work with a mesh and polys seem to boxy, know anything that might get me started?

don't forget to up the iliterations on the meshsmooth modifier or it won't do much. (not too high though - try 2)

This is what the hood looks like as splines with a surface:

and this is what it looks like as a mesh with meshsmooth with iteration of 2:

Right now i dont see how peopel can make exact replicas of anthing as complicated and curvy as a car. Guess I just got to work on it a little bit more.
