matty2x4 08-06-2002, 08:54 PM Hi all, I am building this little fella for a web page. He will be seen mainly from the top and will be quite small. Here is a small hystory...

so am i right when i say the picture on top is your rendering? very very good!
Are you having trouble with bending limbs etc? :) ......if so try using vertex maps/weighting.

SAD - Sorry the pic at the top is the original company logo I am (semi) matching
Kiwi - I will retry tonight, I have tryed using targets, playing with the radius of the bones (big, small, none). I can get the tail moving ok but the head still messes with my mind... should bones really be that hard?

Bones can be a nightmare but if you persevere you should get there in the end.
If you set-selection the head polys, put a restriction tag on the head bone type in your head set-selection name then only those polys will move, I find it works pretty well instead of weightmaps but then again I haven't experimented with weightmaps that much. :)
I know you didn't ask this but the head is looking a little square, you might want to get rid of those triangle polys near the eyes.

I would say get rid of all the triangles in the head. I would use weightmaps for the selction as you can get nicer falloff toward the neck area. Bones suck.......
Otherwise its a nice looking lizard, bit square still?

the middle seems to be quite short, especially incomparison to the first image. Definitely try ti get rid of some of those tri's, and then maybe lower the polycount in the head a little as it is looking too sharp right now. (square)
as for the bones, first of all before anything else make sure EVERY BONE HAS A RESTRICTION TAG!!!!!!!
look into those and then update us on the results.

Are you going to animate this lizard? If not I would suggest modelling him posed, rather than use bones......that way you will have every crease and wrinkle where you wwant them.

Hey thanks for all the sugestion... will try tonight after work.
neilyb: yes it is going to be animated... it is going to be a small icon crawling across a web page. Its going to be pretty small so im not toooo woried about the square look, its mostly going to be a top down view so the face wont really show. I am planing to tidy it up for other uses later.
The whole thing is really a learning job for me, I tryed to take on bones when I first began using cinema and it freaked me out... not unlike whats been hapening lately... I have found the manul a bit lacking in explanations.
