View Full Version : Peugeot 206 WRC - Need Help Rendering with Mental Ray
RichardK 08-29-2004, 05:36 PM Hey guys i need help, I want my 206 car to look photo realistic using 3ds max 6 - Mental Ray. Can anyone help me set it up? Here is a screen of the car at the moment which was rendered in the default render.
Here is a render of the car using the default render

Here is a test render of the car using Brazil with HDRI map

I tried to follow this tutorial but my render looks bad.

The texture on the car looks grey and dull. I want the result like this:

or

If anyone can help me out that would be great! Thanks!

the angle at which you are viewing this car makes it so that the environment only reflects in tiny little strips (above the fender and on bumper). If you brought your camera lower, you would be able to see more reflections off the hood and roof because when you are perpendicularly looking down, you will see minimal HDRI reflections.
you can also turn up the HDRI in the output (u prolly know this) and it might make the paint look a bit less flat.
also, postproduction is the almighty answer to your "dull" problem....

Cool ok thanks! I'll give that another go in Brazil and change the camera angle down abit. Do you know how to setup mental ray or what render do you think would give the better results?

lol thanks, Im only starting using Brazil and other renders by using tutorials. I am not sure if I have the right settings for this type of car. Can you help me or tell me what you use to render your cars, then i can play around with it to get the results I want.

I do the same as you...only my cars don't have lables and sponsors all over them.
try setting up "soft boxes" around your car that are not visible to camera (in properties) and they should give you more reflections. just see how your new lower angle looks first.

That orange plane you put it on drowns out the color of the car. give it a background that makes it pop.
