Yup, don't affect specular and don't affect diffus. Tadaaaaaa !

When I click the diffuse box the light seems to turn off.. it casts no shadow...
there seems to be no difference in turniong thr light off, or clicking off diffuse...

Hmmm... It can't be!..
However, try checking if the object that has to cast the shadow doesn't have an un-checked "cast shadows" box in it's properties. Or the "recieve shadows" box may be unchecked in the ground object's properties.
And, btw, check the "exclude" lists of the lights... Maybe you've "excluded" the object accidently.

I build a scene from skratch, even re booted my machine.. still doesn't work.
these two spot lights are identical except for the highlighted check boxes. Both diffuse and specular have been un-checked.
am I missing somthing?

nothing has been changed
all objects are shadow casting, and reciving: as is default
nothing has been excluded or included

try using a matte/shadow material

It stands to reason that this doesn't work... it wont cast shadows because it's not casting any light.
The way to do it is to go into the exclude dialogue and exclude your logo from illumination only.
Ta da!

that does work, but not the affect I am want for. I need JUST the shadow.. no ilumination what so ever
if I exclude the logo from iluminatino it doesn't not get any light, which is good, but the platform below does.
I need a nice shadow under the logo.
still trying

What's the problem? Make the shadow as a black spot on the ground texture... :p
There are tons of ways for faking shadows.

can't do that, this scene is heavily animated, with many other complex objects moving over the platform, must be with lights..

ever thought about to redner it in 2 "passes" 1 like you have now and 1 with just the shadow, and put it togethe in afterFX or combustion?

try including logo and/or ground object only for shadowing from Include/Exclude list.

ok, I have another idea... In this case.
1. Make a copy of the scene (the file).
2. Make white background, make the ground a matte/shadow material, and use a total transparent material (without any specularity or things like that) for the objects that cast shadows and make lights to cast shadows like you want (Get the idea? Shadowmaps make even transparent objects cast shadows.). Don't worry - it's impossible to illuminate a 255;255;255 color even more.
3. use the top view to render the image... make the size and aspect of the render to exactly fit the plane that you'll apply the map to...
4. Render an .avi of the full anim in the top view...
5. Open the original scene, apply an UVW modifier to the ground and project the map exactly on top.
6. use the.avi that you've rendered for the ground material's diffuse slot.
It's just a brainstorm, but it might work. :)

I think I could duplicate the scene, add a plane above the platform with a matte/shadow material, then put a high intensity omni abve, render out, crop ot the shadow, then re comp in combustion it would work
but I ain't got time for that!!!
ugg, o well.. guess I will have to deal with how it is now.
Thanks for all your help everyone...

I luv that feeling of helping people... :bounce:
I even sometimes think what's better in 3D art. Knowledge or Imagination?
But I guess it's a mix of the two.
Good luck to you.

I think is easier than that.
Put a light. Black Color, Multiplier 1.0, Shadow Color White, Shadow Density -1. Voila
