View Full Version : help with animating tenacacles and cables?
trelum19 08-28-2004, 05:22 PM hi i've been trying to figure out a way that i can animate tentacles or cables. i'm hoping for the freedom to have them bend, extend length, etc. can anyone help me with this? thanks!

silly suggestion, but i dont know what you've tried, but try reactor rope dynamics (depending on max version)

Your description is rather lacking.
Simple semi-dynamic would be to either use reactor cloth or simcloth or any number of other cloth solutions. Animate the cloth using wind.
Create dummies.
Attach the dummies to the cloth.
Use linkedxform on a standard spline vertex and link them to the dummies.
Loft the splines or set them as renderable.
This is not fully dynamic, but neither is your description.

Yew'r shmart LS !
I suppose I overlooked the obvious by not saying splineIK. I guess I was misled by the first suggestion towards creating the dynamics of the cables/tentacles motion rather than their actual control system.
I'll go back to being in the shadows and let you answer the semi-questions.
Spline IK!
talk about lacking..

sorry, i wasn't quite sure how i could explain it. basically what i'm going for is something like this:
http://www.tetsoo.com/contenu_motion/02.html
but that looks like it was just some sort of random animation. i want to be able to have all the control that i want over it. the way that i've always made them is just with a long skinny cone and then i use a spline to define the shape/path.
maybe that is a better description?
thanks.
