View Full Version : modelling: BMW crease and rips problem!

I'm new to 3d and I'm using lightwave to model a BMW.
However, in the front bumper I have a few little black rips and a large crease at the bottom of the intake area.
I dont know enough about modelling to figure out what is wrong. Could someone please help me.
I have attached my image

They say in painting that you can only make 3 mistakes: Shape, Value, and Hue. In 3D we are given many more options.
Say you want a gentle bend or light crease as in the Upper Left...
Some common errors that are made are:
Middle Top: Points overlap, pulling the cages and creating a harsh crease. Turn cages on to see where this is happening and pull them into alignment to fix this.
Top Right: Points aren't welded and create a tear. To Fix: Merge points. You may need to use a range for the Merge. Hint: Select only the points in the area you're working on to use this feature. If you use Merge applied to your whole model you'll likely merge more than you were counting on and encounter the next error type.
Bottom: (And this is the infuriating one) Points are accidentally merged causing more than 4 polygons to meet at a single point causing render errors. The only fix here is Undo, Undo, Undo... until you've undone the merge that caused this, or else rebuild the area.
I can't fix what you've got going on, but if you look out for these common mistakes, you'll be able to plan out your modeling moves more efficiently.
Good luck on your project.
(edited for an error I noticed as well as spelling)

Not actually giving you an answer here, but these should be good references for Sub-P car modeling :)
