View Full Version : Wings 0.98.25 is out
crgowo 08-28-2004, 09:03 AM qoute from bjorng
A new release thanks to Dan and Raimo.
As you might have noticed, I have not been especially active here lately. After 3 years, I need to do other things than Wings.
I will continue to do the releases - otherwise there will be no Mac release - but most of the actual content will be from Dan and Raimo. I might also continue to spend some time on Wings, but it will be far less than it used to be.
For the time being.
I might get back to do more Wings work after a few months. I might get my inspiration back.
Meanwhile I might actually start to use Wings for some modeling.
It should be good enough now.
Enjoy!
/Björn
- In the Camera preferences, the direction for zoom wheel scrolling can
now be chosen. (Suggested by Panther.)
- The native file dialog for Mac OS X is back. (It can be turned off
using the new File|Mac OS File Dialog.)
- New connect tool by Dan: Tools|Connect
- In the source code distribution only: Rolf Stenholm has silently written
plug-ins for Wings, such as an improved OpenGL renderer and tree view
for material editing. Now he has now time to continue working on the
code, so he sent it to us. We have included it in contrib/rspt.
(All or part of the code may be included in future Wings releases,
when we have got it to work with current Wings releases.)
Yafray updates by Raimo:
- All YafRay 0.0.6 shader blocks are now implemented.
The shader blocks are edited in a new very dynamic dialog.
- Plugin preferences "Options" and "Auto Load Image" are no longer
accidentally ignored.
- The OpenGL specular color is now used as default for
fresnel reflected color.
AutoUV improvements by Dan:
- More consistent edge selections in AutoUV and the main Wings window.
- New Flatten command in vertex mode.
- New Unfold command in vertex mode. Selected vertices will be pinned
(not moved).
- [Alt] + left mouse button will move the selected items.
- New Stitch and Cut commands in edge mode for joining and splitting
charts.
- Eliminated crash when Create Texture was invoked from Window/UV Editor Window.
- Changed near plane so that you can zoom closer.
- AutoUV now uses assigned hotkeys for Move, Rotate, and Scale.
Internal changes (for developers) by Raimo:
- wings_ask: Stopped laying out hframe spacing after zero width fields.
- wings_ask/wpa: Generalized some mechanisms used for file browse buttons,
later to be used for a general button throwing up a new dialog.
Also introduced a value field handy for cheating any value through
a dialog instead of passing it in the enclosing fun's context.

"I might get back to do more Wings work after a few months. I might get my inspiration back."
Does this mean bjorng lost interest in Wings?

thats what it sounds like. sad thing, but i'm glad he has others to take the reins until he gets his creative spark back.

I hope more developers join the Wings team. Hoprefully. That would mean Bjorn would get more help and he can take more time off for himself.
And, it would also mean faster releases! :scream:

Why would we want that?
*whips Bjorn with anti-christ looking face...Work monkey!
He deserves "years" of break and I agree with him that wings is quite useable and capable for now and for me,it has personally been doing the job for quite a while.(really only lacking realtime subd's so I can be a happy dwarf)

HAHAHAHAHAHHAA!! Good one Steph...
I agree with you, Wings is really a strong modeller as it is now. It's better than any other application in modelling , for now.
Realtime SubD's would be awesome! :D

i got 25 and saw the release nots about a connect tool. well to the best of my knowledge, we already had a connect tool. so i was wondering what all the hoopla was about and i went searching. soon enough i found it in the Tools menu of all places :) anyhow, to say i was impressed would have been an understatement. this has to be one of the best implementations of a cut tool.

Wait... what is the difference between the old connect tool and the new?

Wait... what is the difference between the old connect tool and the new?
The old is not a Tool...its a function. You would select a bunch of edges (or points) and press connect. The new is an interactive tool (like tweak). You click an edge, it puts a point, you click another edge, it connects the two points, click a point and it connects that too. It works like the Split Poly Tool from Maya.

Don't forget that you can also slide the (new) vert by holding down LMB.
Apart from obvious uses, this is handy when placing a new vert close to an existing one - when highlighting switches from the edge to the (old) vert. ie place new vert on edge and slide into position (can also press E to temporarily lock into edge mode)
Shift and Contrl constraints also function as standard with this tool.
A job well done by the coders ... a definite candidate for a hotkey, imo :)

Wasn't this available on the older versions?

Yes, as the Draw Loop plugin, written by Clacos - but it (together with his other plugs) won't work beyond .9804 / .9806 release.
This new Connect Tool is the only one to have been (publicly) released as part of the main app.

There was a connect if you had to edges and select connect it will create another edge connecting the middle of both. This one is interactive on where you want the edge.

I think the thing which seperates Wings3D from the rest, with regards to this new draw edge "connect" tool is... that you can rotate/dolly your cam and still have the tool active to continue to draw with... so interactive... so intuitive... so good... :)
now if someone would please get rid of the rest of the UI, ie. the windows titlebar, and the menu bar, and just make the whole thing the thin gray border.... maybe this as an advanced option would be super... ;) :D I have to chuckle when I read post's whereby people figure the fancier the UI the better the app is... when in fact it is almost just the opposite which is the case...
ah well... hehe ;)
thanks to you Bjorn, and to the rest of you who have done your part in keeping the Wings3D movement alive and well... :)

A polygon/subd modeler only that's still in Beta stage.

Is there much difference between how any / all of these apps and wings - re how this tool has been implemented?
Do you have any suggestions about additional features that could be considered (other than auto slicing of many edges / complete object and constant % / distance options) ?

"can be done in maya, xsi, clay, houdini "
Max too, though you have to download a script (free).

Well since R4(I think) you can have the Extrude tool as a dialog which allows you to rotate view around your model before finally applying the operation.Bit unintuitive though to have to press enter to confirm.

yeah. being able to go back on the edge you just created. and being able to undo each step you make. without having to cancel/ undo the entire set.

<< yeah. being able to go back on the edge you just created. and being able to undo each step you make. without having to cancel/ undo the entire set. >>
Do you mean something different from what already exists ?
Cos yes, using undo after exiting the tool removes everything – but not whilst you’re still using the tool – you can still undo an edge at a time as you’re going along – even after the last vert double click to finish a sequence.
This allows user to backtrack (albeit without auto pickup) so if you wanted to re-edit a vert, backtrack to the one prior and (re)start from there? Maybe not ideal, but available…
