View Full Version : BEVEL breaks in Polygons
Love-Fest 08-27-2004, 02:05 AM How do you get Maya to bevel without these inconvenient breaks? http://www.planetunreal.com/utlovefest/downloads/images/highEnd3d/BevelPoly.jpg

Yes, someone should post the bevel bug to Alias in Maya 6 (and 6.01) as this:
1. create a polygon sphere
2. select an edge ring on that sphere
3. choose polygon->bevel
4. go to the attribute editor, adjust the roundness and offset
5. everything is cool up to this point
6. But when you adjust the number of segments to greater than 1, the viewport seems to look correct. But you can no longer select an edge ring with any of those new segments. It seems Maya create a gap in the edge ring of any of the new segment.
It seems to me that if you keep the segment to 1, the Maya bevel works okay. And this is what Byron Tool did anyway - Byron tool does not do more than 1 bevel segments at a time. From looking at the screenshot above, I think this is what is causing the gap or extra geometry in the edge rings above in your bevel model.

What's the "Byron Tool"?
I don't think this gap between the corners is a bug. It's been around since version 3.
In their book "Mastering Maya 3", John Gundert-Gibbs and Peter Lee wrote about this in chapter six, Editing Polygons, fig.6.37. He says you can remedy this by "...clean[ing] up [the cube] into quadrangles..."
But quadrangulating doesn't create the effect I see fig. 6.37. It does nothing. I still have the gap.
Any ideas what to do?
I guess I don't quite know what's wrong with Maya bevel then. Anyway, there's a free and commercial plugin for Maya 4.5, 5, and 6 which I hope it works for you.

this bevel thing is not a bug but a feature that maya supports since version 1.0.
it has never been better or worse (but i really wonder, since they "enhanced" it in 6.0..
it sucks and thus no one really uses it. and yes.. any other 3d app does it the way you expect.
cheers
