View Full Version : Nuclear Detonation FX Particle application?
admiraligor 08-27-2004, 02:46 AM Hello, I'm looking to create a realistic nuclear detonation within 3ds max, but I dont know what would be the best plugin for it? Combustion, AE? It would need to be photorealistic, and with my current system, render times wont apply - so dont judge by render times, or computation speeds. Just what would be the best particle plugin for 3ds max 6 that could do everything I would need? (detonation fireball, rising dust colum, shockwave with a scattered dust floor in its wake) Thank you!

Well you have a couple of choices in 3dsmax but my personal preference would be to use Particle Flow. It comes with Max6 and offers all the power you need. You also might want to look into Particle Studio, its still a pretty solid particle system that does some things far easier than PFlow.
For rendering I would use Afterburn 3.0, or Aura if you can get into the Beta. There are a few other volumetric plugins, but those two are by far the best for creating convincing fire/smoke.
Nuclear blasts are very challenging to pull off , and are not for someone who hasnt had a decent amount of experience with particles. Especially if you are trying to create a believable photorealistic blast, plume, and shockwave.
I would also recommend taking a good look at the explosions page on groundzerofx, it has a lot of useful information that you will need in order to pull off this project with success.

Good luck!

I could never figure out how to use particle flow sadly. However, I do have a quite extensive list of skills when it comes down to max 2 through 5's defualt particle systems and spacewarps. But once again, however, they simply dont have the power to create this style of explosion. That I am aware of however. Now I can EASILY make it in maya, but I choose not to, mainly for a learning experiance. As for that article, I thank you, however I know more then I should about the mechanics of nuclear weapons, and their effects :) If you could perhaps tell me how to make one in particle flow, or make a simple one and send it over. (So I could back-engineer it heh) that would be awsome!

Take a look at this tutorial, Not very realistic but it might help.. you can get the best of both worlds and mix between mesh-modeling the explosion and adding particle systems.

I have to say, that is the worst - unrealistic tutorial I've ever seen on this subject. I've used it before and it looked totally fake with the kind of work I need to do. thnx tho :)
