Time to participate now, been watching these challanges for to long.
A few different concepts are spinning around in my head right now. Concept sketches to follow soon.

Tada, the impressive concept modelling.
http://home.swipnet.se/hvaetaen/challenges/august/wip1.gif
Think 30´s design, lots of wood and ropes. Different small gadgets everywhere. A nice sunchair on the lowerdeck for our hero to relax in. The living quarters is the large thing underneath. Some ship-like windows.
Well, we will see how much I will have time to add.
Thank you OZ, watch your back ;).

nice wood man.
I must be honest but I don't thing the baloons work, they might work in a way that it all looks ( what is the name of taht style ) I thin the style is cartoonish.
big and smaller balloons and then hold togheter with a net.
I like the rest and it gives me the idea of air pirates.
You know in those pirate ships they have those little baskets in the top of the boat.
Well these are all my interpretations. I hope you like them and c ya later
Hi Mikael P - are you sure those metalthings will hold the rope? They´re open ! Looks great all the same!
MikaelPersson
08-07-2002, 08:36 PM
@Iguiniz.X. Thank you. Well, these balloons will not be constructed the way I´ve made in the concept. That was just for showing the idea. I´ve thought about a net, or bind them together in some way. Probably adding a bunch more. But not to much. It shall make a nice model, not being to realistic.
Yes, the pirate theme is in my mind. But I am more into the lonely traveler who has furnished his balloon as his flying home.
The basket thought has struck me to, but more in making one of the landing railings to be constructed out of that material.
@pit I think so. The rope is much larger than the hole that is left. And when the blacksmith made them he could just bend them like that. He had to leave some air.
Update will probably follow tomorrow. To tired tonight to make anything.
SMART START!my hands shaking......brrrrrrrrrrrr!;) goGOgoGO!!!
oooooooo . nice start the wood are perfect ... keep it up dude:thumbsup: :bounce: :wip:

WOW! Great start with that wood!
How big will this contraption be if the pilot can walk around at leisure? :D
MikaelPersson
08-07-2002, 09:29 PM
thanks guys.
erilaz Not to big, or maybe scratching the roof of allowed largness. Those platforms in the concept sketch, one man should be able to stand or sit on them. Not allowing for much else there.
My hero lives down below in that polygonal sphere.
like your design, cant wait to see it progress:thumbsup:

08-07-2002, 11:38 PM
i really like the wooden planks, and the progress so far. how did you get that grainy shadow on the planks? i think it adds to the rustic nature of the craft. good job so far! :bounce: :applause:
Harrad
08-08-2002, 01:39 AM
Good idea. Are you going to add some sort of power? rockets/propellers? or just have it blowing in the wind? Have you seen the film "the adventures of baron munshousen?" you could get some good reference of the balloon in that.
-Matt :D
MikaelPersson
08-08-2002, 09:48 AM
Elf thanks
Virtuoso The rules said something about a construction not allowing for more than four persons. So it can´t be to large.
Yes, I plan to keep it detailed this time. No modelling for animation now. I am just going to swamp it with detail (I hope ;) )
TiKiMoN When you do raytrace shadows in maya and the settings are quite low. You get that effect.
Harrad I have thought about adding some sort of engine at the bottom of the polygonal sphere. Just parts of it extending out of the shell. Not forgetting the big exhaust pipe. Yes, I have seen that movie, but it was a while ago. I dont know where I would get hold of it now. My main inspiration right now is some movies from Studio Ghibli. They have wonderful flying machines in several of their movies.
thanks for the kind words guys.

Nice wooden platform indeed! Btw i am maya user too (ouch from maya 1... ) welcome on board (or should i say on platform?)
------- side note --------
About physics and flying-able machines....i am pretty sure that 99,99 % homemades couldnt fly and will never fly but who cares its for fun and we are not plane constructors :-)
btw area lights for concepts ? isnt it too expensive :) ?

Anyway it looks promising start, keep on updating please

nice concept. those Studio Ghibli are very cool that is where i got my idea for this challenge. You know you can buy a whole collection of those films from an import shop online. That is where i got (sp) Luputa, Nausicaa, porko rosso, and others. Keep up the good work.

Iguiniz.X. Thanks for the name. Will check him up more closely. The village sound like a good idea, if I would have more time. But I think it´s better to concentrate on just this single one.
freemind77 thanks. This one for sure, would never fly. Rather sink...
It´s not area lights, just two directionals. And no it´s not to expensive. I´d rather got those nice shadows.
robertp I think I got the same box. Bought it a few months ago.
Pomporo pom. Tonights update, I give you the sinking machine.
Btw, if you get any good idea for railings for the small platforms. Do share.
c&c much welcome.

Mikael................. Beautiful , very appealing , nice look, very clean and unmanufactured looking. As I said in my last post it looks promising and so far you are coming along very well. By the way go for size and in-depth details, just keep it to 4 passengers, that's still within the rules.............I'll be back fo some more fun, keep up the good art......... :)
Hej Mikael...
Very nice execution of your sketch so far. I think I can tell from your El Draco and this challenge, that you´re a pro (are you working in the games industry ?).
I know this is wip but anyway it would really please my eyes if you turned down the light intensity or maybe darkened the wood a little bit.
Great concept. Waiting for more..
And by the way, isn´t it strange that a dane speaks english to a swede..huh ???

08-09-2002, 11:03 AM
Hej rok. Jo det är lite märkligt. Fast vill man släppa in resten av världen så får man ju försöka vara lite universell (tycker också att det kan bli lite konstigt).
Yes, you could say that I am a pro. I have been working professionally for five years now. Not inside the games industry though. It has only been post production, commercials, music videos and so on.
Hmm, do you think it´s to bright. Maybe, but I like that bright look. But I could play a little with the light intensity.
virtuoso glad to hear that, clean stuff is something I like.
Update will probably follow tonight.

The waterpipe-banisters-railing is pretty cool!! Will the bottomhalf ( living quarters be under water at some point? U can close it hermtically (i guess) and it has these marine windows. Well ... Just wondering!
BTW: how do u breathe in there? It needs some more openings, i think - and some flowers at the windows!
hypercube
08-09-2002, 05:52 PM
This is shaping up great..like the way the mixed materials are coming in and together..love the design, too. I think the balloons at that size aren't unreasonable at all, pictured victorian style, with the 'netting' around the middle, etc. if it's all hand sewn..
Only thing I can't figure is how he ascends/descends..indirect warming of the balloons, then allow gradual cooling?
Also the metalwork seems awfully tight for the wood being so rough hewn..but I'm sure that'll come..
keep it comin'
MikaelPersson
08-09-2002, 06:26 PM
pit & hypercube Thanks for the new ideas. Will think about them, probably use them too. Yes, I will break up that metal too, in some ways. I´ll see how though.
cube I had an idea about wacuum-cleaners inflating and deflating the balloons, but I haven´t decided yet on how, or if.
I wasn´t sure about the new railing, so I made another version. Wich one do you prefer?

08-09-2002, 07:45 PM
looking great mikael!
hm, I don't know which one I prefer.. the first one with the railing had a little bit more variation. maybe the railing was to big though.. really don't know. it's more about taste there I think.
and try to rough up the metal some as hypercube said.. most of it should probably be made in the textues(scratches etc..) but since they ain't allowed try to make som buckles or something.
the submarine windows are a really cool addition, aswell as the "tank lock"
keep on working :wip: :)
Virtuoso
08-09-2002, 10:46 PM
Better again..............I like the second one a bit better. The variation is just a little more in the details department and the 90 degree bends look good with the rest. I would probably should add another support to the botton portion of that part of the deck, another pipe connection, but that's just me.
Overall I think it has a very nice quality and feel to it, keeep up the nice work Mikael............ :)
PIPES RULEZ!!!It gives more variety to the model!
ps:DAMN!!!that wood is amazing!all 3d? ARGH!:wavey:
MikaelPersson
08-09-2002, 11:51 PM
hmm. I will have to sleep on it. But I think I will go for the pipes, just alter them somewhat, shrink them for a start.
:) Yes, I will do the trashing of the metal next. It sounds like a big issue, and you are probably right. The poor computer will refuse to render when I´ve done that.
Yes, OZ not a single texture in sight.

Love the wood, love the ropes, love the ballons.... overall. Love your model!! :D Going out great!! keep up the good job!!
Hi Mikael
suggestion: how about making the bottommost section of the living quarters (below the yellow band) glass - so u can look into it (and out) ! More modelling for u ofcourse, but it would be nice to see whats going on in there!! Imagine having your bed down there-> sailing through the night ->looking at the stars - cool!! Binoculars/ telescope on the upper deck for an even closer look at them stars would be great too.
MikaelPersson
08-10-2002, 01:08 PM
LaBero thanks.
prayas Haha, yes, I have been thinking about adding some sort of defense or offense mechanism. But that isn´t a high priority.
The wood is just normal poly modelling, nothing special. Made a base plank and modified it.
Ragnarok Thank you for the kind words, I need them. I tend to get overly critical of my on work.
pit hmm. that was a good idea, I should probably apply it in some way. I´ve been thinking of modelling an engine at the bottom, to both get the thing going. And connect it to the balloons for inflating and deflating. Yes, binoculars has been on my mind. Haven´t decided on wich one yet. Maybe he should steal one of those you have on all sightseeing locations. You know the ones you put coins in and then you can watch for a few minutes. Or the standard old wooden extrudable one.
Go for the sightseeing type - has the same heavy, "hermetic" feel to it as your living quarters. Would match perfectly.
MikaelPersson
08-10-2002, 11:59 PM

MikaelPersson
08-11-2002, 03:25 PM
Gabe Thank you. I haven´t done that much tinking or sketching of a character. The general idea is the lonely man taking his resort in this flying home. Kind of victorian, professor, traveler, adventurer kind of guy. Sipping his afternoon tea on the lower platform.
otacon Working on the detail part.
tascitus lol. Yes it´s nice. Just a quick hack for pit.
bentllama Yes, I will try to break up the symmetry of it. It´s so time consuming making it old when you can´t use textures.
OZ, fellah, erilaz thank you guys!
Lukashi thanks. hmm, I will see what I can do about it. It would be fun to keep away from all bump maps. I haven´t used any yet, and I would like to keep it that way.
Had little fun with photoshop:

Don´t ask why, but i instantly thought of Findus and Petterson (don´t know if that´s the original names -> great childrens books by Sven Nordqvist, u certainly know them), as i saw the chair and the cup. maybe because you´re from Sweden. Well, anyway - it would be cool with a mess on the upper deck like in the workshop of Petterson, if your character is a distracted, crazy Professor type of guy.
I think the render is to noisy/grainy - what happend?

Like the professor idea very much. But for that he'll need a lab on his flying thingy.

pit Oh, so they are translated, Findus & Pettson is the original name. I love them. Great illustrations.
I have more thought of him as the elegant but trashed gentleman, not the distracted professor. :) the grain, I had to make it blend with the photo backdrop. Looks more authentic this way.
serul thank you.
prayas I dont know about lab, more like having his home spread out on top. Yep, not a single texture. No filters are usually very ugly. You have to know when to use them.

It makes me so happy that you like it. Hmm, haven´t heard about those flying machines freemind77. Yes, visualboo wire and lambert shaded models will follow. But you know, I´ve stated it a few times. There are no textures here. But I assume you mean one single colour. Good idea Fetus23. I will see what I can do about rope ladders and other fabrics. I have been thinking of tying some kind of net around some of the pipe-railings.
Just thought I would give you a quick update on the binocoulars:

MikaelPersson
08-12-2002, 08:02 PM
The scratches are modelled. I made one "scratch" and copied it around and modified it so that it would fit. The large circular dents are modelled too. But another shader is assigned to a few of the polygons at the bottom. Dito with the scratch bottoms.
Clanger I have been thinking of that. But it hasn´t been a high priority.
Thank you OZ :).

08-12-2002, 09:23 PM
Rolling along nicely, just keeps getting better..I like the purloined binoculars, the balloon rigs, etc...
Couple thoughts, maybe some netting or canvas or such inbetween the pipe railings to fill in that space? The rickety/dangerous feeling in general is great but it seems like you could really slip right through there on a bad step :) Some extra hasty support under the pedestal might be good as well. Also how about an upper window or two on the dwelling below, maybe a retractable telescope aimed upwards? Might be nice if he could get a little look up at the sky while inside.
Anyway, just a couple of ideas..will stay tuned in :D
I´ll join the choir: GORGEOUS!!

08-12-2002, 10:47 PM
Yes fellah, the light has improved a lot lately. It´s no longer only two directionals, more closely 33 ;). Yes the binoculars did add a lot. Hopefully it will be that way when I add all the other small gadgets I´ve been thinking of.
Good ideas hypercube, especially the one about a roof window and that binocular. Yes the dangerous feeling has hit me several times too. Will add some kind of net.

08-13-2002, 02:34 AM
hi Mikael,
very nice design. love the wear and tear you've modeled into it.
Also love the baloons you've made. They're really cool. For me they are what makes the image. :D
I do however have a problem with the ropes and the top platform. The ropes don't seem like they'd offer any support if someone was to trip against them.
The same for the top platform (bridge?) - it doesn't look like it would hold up. That diagonal bar should end in the vertical bar, not another horizontal one, and there should be another diagonal bar in the opposite direction too.
otacon
08-13-2002, 03:38 AM

For more detail....maybe some bundled up ropes or nets lying around, or some sand bags hanging from the poles, or a rail gun.....just some ideas:) keep it up.

08-13-2002, 10:59 AM
The triangle count is up to 250k right now visualboo, but that doesnt include all the surfaces done with NURBS. Thanks for the crit sherban, I do agree. I´ll see what I can do about it. I love watching your thread. Brings a strange sense of nostalgia, like I'm playing Riven or something. This is a beautiful work.
Just a small crit: that trio of creases you've put near the port hole seems a bit uniform, and it's mirrored on the next panel on the left. A little less symmetry would be good there.:D
Really fantastic mikael, I'm absolutely loving it.
yehh - nice - very clean, brillianty modeling here i look for repetition in the wood plank but i cant find some have u a script for it or all by hand ?
MikaelPersson
08-13-2002, 02:36 PM
:) erilaz nice to hear that it provokes emotion. Even though I´ve never played Myst or Riven. Yes, maybe the three scratches are too uniform. But they were meant that way, and no they aren´t just copied over. More like the thing causing the scratches traveled over several surfaces. But maybe I should do something about it, if you people find it too uniform. Thank you man.
Nope swag no fancy scripts, just sweat and tears. Thanks again for the kind words.

 I already wrote a response here, but it got erased. Did you read it already or should I write it again?
But if I were to rewrite it in its most basic form, it went: Like it, but worried, to many polys . . . and dents not so great, could use some more work. Maybe use bump maps to conserve polies otherwise the amount of details possible might suffer.
Otherwise, I love the design and the general shape of your creation so far. It should prove to be very interesting once it is finished, keep it up!!

08-17-2002, 12:50 PM
baal, the scratches and dents are just plain modelling.
Apt Pupil, nope did not read your last (erased) post. Do expand your thoughts, always nice with some harder critisism. Do you have any ideas on how or what you dont like about the dents? To uniform?
I have been taking a break from modelling for a few days. Will probably take it up agin in a day or two. Cant exhaust all inspiration, must gain some too. After all, this is supposed to be fun. Right? Glad you liked it Apt, always encouraging when good artist are interested in your work. :)

Sorry about my delayed response:blush:
What I meant . . . that perhaps they are to singular. By themselves, they are too aparent hence perhaps by using bump maps to create tiny bumps in certain areas as well as larger gradual uneven areas along the flat plains would make it look more uniform and realistic. But then, you already said it, they are to uniform:)
Well, other than that, I love everything else. I'll be watching your thread with interest and anticipation. And if you should ever find anything wierd about mine, don't hesitate to hit me over the head too heheheh:)

nice ditails, but i think the boards are too smooth at the ends of them(bad english). like the unregular stile of everything in that scene :p

Thanks otacon and prayas, you dont think you are using to strong words now ;) ? Yes, I think I will start on a character now, I am bored with adding detail to this ship now.
the_jonas (svensk?), have you ever looked at drift wood (drivved) (hmm. bad swedish direct translation, but it might be correct). You know wood you find at the beaches that has been in the water for a long time. Leftovers from shipwrecks. That kind of planks are smooth like that.

hey mikael,
man with the new additions i really really like your project, it has such a nice and comfortable feel to it - just by looking at the piece i can imagine a guy sitting on that chair, legs crossed on the table, sipping his tee and taking an occasional look through his telescope :applause:
what it don't like is the wires you added, i think they are too much of them, it really clutters the view...you could solve this by making them fewer or a bit thinner, well that is if you planned to model them like you photoshopped them ;)
MikaelPersson
08-20-2002, 09:13 PM
Thanks fist. Yes, that was my intention with this model. To give you exactly that feeling. About the wires, yes, you are probably correct. They do clutter the image. I will see what I can do about it.
I did a quick turntable of the flying contraption today. Enjoy.

oo oo...I just though of something that could add a whole new dimension :). You could have a "cut away" shot showing the interior of the pod...a nice comfortable living space. Like those books showing cut aways of ships and planes. I love those books .:scream: Another suggestion would be to make the balloon bulging from the ropes a bit more. REALLY nice model by the way!!!

That is a very good idea Fetus23, I will see what I can do about it. (time/inspiration/the inhabitant) and so on. Yes, maybe I should make those balloons bulge a bit more. I´ll look into it.

You are fantactic!!! I am very impressed with your modeling skills, I do have a small crit though. All the nails used on your wooden boards appear to be set at the same depth, every one of them is sticking out. I recommend randomizing this area quite a bit, sink most of the nails all the way to the wood surface. Way to go Mikael :buttrock:

08-24-2002, 03:02 PM
yea, the last render is VERY nice, almost perfect!
the guy you're making looks good so far to, but it look like he will be a "realistic" character? I would prefer to see some kinda "fantasy guy" on that ship. at least not 100% human.
we'll, one of my preferer for sure, keep it up :)
MikaelPersson
08-24-2002, 05:02 PM
:) Glad you like it. Good point dmcgrath, I will go over the nails. And make the difference larger. Thanks fellah, I had a realistic character in mind, but I am thinking of making his clothing really eccentric. I haven´t made that many realistic humans ( uhm, this is the first) so I thought I could use the experience. But you shall never say never (öh, finns det något sådant talesätt på engelska). Thanks visaulboo.

08-24-2002, 05:51 PM
Those renders have a nice cartoon/fantasy feel to them.
It must be the soft coloring and the clean look of it all. So I'd have to agree with fellah about the character, I think a realistic character ala FF the movie would be out of place. Something stylised would suit the scene better.
Also, I think the "cut away" idea is really good :D
But anyways, I like it alot
MikaelPersson

You do have a point Joril. I will try to make something stylized instead.

yes sort of OZ, those nails are adjusted almost individually. I had a flyby animation on the previous page.
It sure would be fun with a character animation. I hope I will have time for it. If not this concept of a pilot takes to long time. You don´t have one lying around?
very nice - the rope to the balloons looks painted too perfect and straight i think - go for a little fat man (mix comic/real style):)

Now follows a short description of my light-setup as requested.
I have one spot from each window, and one from above (the ladder). All of them are shadowcasting. No decay or anything.
Two pointlights in the visible windows to get those highlights there.
For general light I am using a fake GI script for maya (GI Joe). It consists of 32 directional lights.
The sky part is coloured slightly blue. Does cast shadow, the interior walls are unlinked. The ground part has a red/brown colour and doesn´t cast any shadows at all. I didn´t include the directional lights in the screen grab, they would´ve just cluttered the image.
http://home.swipnet.se/hvaetaen/challenges/august/lightsetup.jpg
If this was a to brief description, ask.
Oh, yeah. There is some p-shop magic applied to those images. They are not straight out of maya.
Roach[MXF]
08-28-2002, 12:34 AM
Looks good but the placement of shadows under certain objects (the gun for example) should be corrected. It does not show weight because the shadow should be right under it because the gun would block the light other than the light going over it. do you know what I mean? either move the gun down onto the mattress and use a soft selection to indent a bit of weight into the mattress or just fiddle with the lighting. Good job. Keep going :) -Jeremy-

nice mikael, i like all the stuff you put in there
it already looks quite detailed
there is one thing that needs work imo:
http://www.k-dump.net/files/cgtalk/wip_interior4-lines.jpg
the edges of the hull should get some bars on the inside, you could then put all those bolts on the bars
at the moment it looks like the hull is made out of one piece, so those edges look a bit wrong
Great looking.
Though I agree with fist, the bolts must link the plates on something, like a metal frame. Would be great, and intensify the nordic style of your vessel if the walls where doubled with wood planks. (And then there'll miss only a sauna ! )

mh another crit, now that you mention the gun - i think it doesn't really fit in
or let me rather say: a crossbow would be much nicer :D
MikaelPersson
08-31-2002, 02:09 PM
That is a good idea fist. It is not possible to see it in that tiny image, but that gun is modeled as a really old fashioned one, with an external igniter. But i will consider the crossbow.
fellah
08-31-2002, 02:14 PM
starting with saying thanks for showing us your lighting setup, much appreciated!
crits/ideas:
I think you should get rid of the gun and the map on the bed, they drag to much attention and it looks like they are floating in the air.. maybe try to add some soft pillows instead.
the skyTexture(at the closeup mostly) looks to sharp.. try to add some gaussian blur to it(to mimic DOF)
and maybe add some kinda old lamp to the table? might give a nice mood if you give the lampLight a redTinted light.. that will make the "deskarea" the mainFocus..
the map on the wall looks weird to.. like if it.. I dunno.. looks to "flat"..
and the things "fist" mentioned about the wall.
ouch, although I really really like it I had alot of crits :surprised
well, ideas is a better word.. don't use them if you don't wan't to.. just ideas :)
take care
// fellah
Aearon
08-31-2002, 02:17 PM
yeah i see, but imo - although it's not a modern gun - it still takes away from the comfortable feeling of the piece
mh and a crossbow would also be more practical - with a gun the birds will just fall down randomly, but with the crossbow you could attach a rope to the arrow and then pull the poor bastards back up :D :D
just my very personal view of things, i also like it the way it is ! :)
DimitrisLiatsos
08-31-2002, 02:24 PM
 that's more like it...now i think u can put anything more u like...old stuff!!! anything
MikaelPersson
08-31-2002, 02:27 PM
:D yes, fist, good point.
Yeah fellah I agree with the gun and map draging the attention away. Actually my first thought to balance the image was to model a pillow. But that was to boring so I went for a gun instead ;). Yes, that map and gun will be scrapped. A pillow will follow. Lol about the clouds. Yes ofcourse they should be treated with some gaussian, I just forgot to apply it when I posted last night. Hmm that wall map might need some work yes. I will see what I can do about it. I like these kinds of critique, it does help me to push the creation further.
:wavey:
first I though a gun was better, but yeah! a mix crossbow-harpoon-with-a-rope would definitely do.
As for my wood "nordic" idea I think you should anyway think about temperature cause your poor guy will froze to death at hight altitudes in a small metal box. Wood is a good material for isolation (as you know, swedish as you are ;) ) and a heating system should be nice to add.
:wip:
MikaelPersson
08-31-2002, 11:23 PM
Tonights update,
http://home.swipnet.se/hvaetaen/challenges/august/wip_interior6.jpg
I haven´t had time to do the crossbow yet. Made a heater instead. The gun is hidden in the shadows, just for added detail. The isolation idea is a good one m@.. But adding wood on all the walls would make the image to crowded. I like that flat look of the walls right now. Sensory overload would be the result (I think) I haven´t tried it yet.
very nice ;)
I would suggest to put some "nails" on the map, now it looks like the map is flying
howd you go about making the wood table and outside deck ????
But adding wood on all the walls would make the image to crowded
I don't think so.. but you choose... I think you should at least try. If you place them aligned one plank on an other, uniformly , it will repeat the stripe pattern of the matress and thus not clash too much. Anyway it's looking great, nice heater
MikaelPersson
09-01-2002, 01:30 PM
You are correct iC4- the thought has crossed my mind some times now. But as I did not think he would be able to hammer a nail into steel I did not put it there. Well, maybe I should.
Hard work Ech0. I made a polygonal box then subdivided it a few times to get the lines. Then I went and pulled all those vertices one by one to achieve that look. Duplicated that plank and made a few adjustments, then I had a new one. [repeat process until you tire of it.]
Hmm, I will try it out m@.. Yes, I was thinking of placing them on top of each other uniformly. Good thought about repeating the stripes. Glad you liked the heater.

Good evening.
I went for m@'s idea about turning it into a lodge. It turned out really well. Haven´t taken care of the floor yet though. Been wrestling the light wich refuses to do what I want :annoyed: .
http://home.swipnet.se/hvaetaen/challenges/august/wip_interior7.jpg
Really good idea about the widescreen picture fellah. That will follow tomorrow. I will see what I can do about the light. But I have envisioned day light. So I thought I would have all the lights turned off inside. Glad you like it.
Thanks Fetus23, it is the light setup that creates the nice feel of it. I have no fancy shaders whatsoever. Yes, a picture with the cut-away will follow. Good that you reminded me.
I have only two days left in town so I dont know if I will be able to make a character for this piece. But I hope so, just have to sacrifice sleep for two nights.
WoooOOOhooo! that's fantastic Mikael! just the kind of thing I was waiting for!

hey there mikael,
I like the new update, very good!
I think you can do even more with the lighting to create a nice mood though..
*mikael's thought about fellah right now: grr.. that fellah.. he must be a real bastard.. dosen't he understand anything.. I wan't it this way.. grr..* ;)
I made a quick mood test in PS.. this is the direction I would have taken if I where you(but I'm that kinda fantasy guy, maybe you wan't the more realistic look, you decide this is just an idea) and maybe add something in the topLeft corner(ex: ropes hanging down) and apply dof(gaussian in PS) to them to get more depth in the image.
might have exaggerated a bit much with the color difference, and I know you wan't it to look more like daylight.. but _it's just another idea_
hope you don't mind me posting my little PSfix here, if you do, tell me and I'll remove it.

lol. no prob fellah. That is something I have to learn, painting with lights. You are correct about the ropes too. That is usually something I completly forget when doing CG, but think of all the time when doing photography. I liked your suggestion. I will go easy on the glow and soft focus though. But will try it out with more coloured lights.
Well, sometime I will do the final picture. Then I probably will spend hours in p-shop retouching it. I haven´t thought that it would be worth the time doing that yet.
:) about the anim m@. Dont get your hopes up to high. I have nothing near any finished character yet. So if, there will just be some camera movement.

It's strange why the sky in the left window is so dark? is it a massive-rain-grey cloud? if not, the sky should have the same intensity in all direction(if you're not directly looking at the sun of course, and given the shadows, the right window is not)

Very nice work, although I have one little observation: the way the ropes that hold the baloons are held to the circular metal bar doesn't seems very solid, just a simple loose knot.... anyway, that's just a small detail in one wonderful piece of art! I like this one.. the pic is almost like a story, that's art
hope to see you in the next challenge, it's a pleasure to see you work,

I like how you have implemented the wood into the interioir scene. It looks cosy.. rather than crowded as you thought it might look. Very nice air vehicle/home!!!

wow, thanks for the really encouraging words. Back from my trip to catch up on the ending- and beginning of the new challenge.
Baal, hehe yes I know about the ropes, but there was no time. That map on the wall did turn out nice. It was a bit of thinking to find out where the folds should be directed.
otacon, dmcgrath thanks!
ila solomon :) nope, not a single texture.
Fetus23 Thank you. Maybe you should describe your idea about cutaway. I dont hink I got it.
DimitrisLiatsos, stipen, m@, STRIKE you do make me happy, thanks.
fellah Really glad you like it. Hmm, interesting to see that you like the new bed more. I was a bit sad that I had to take away the nice stripes due to the texture restrictions. Yep, count me in for the next challenge.
scribble yes, that wood for the interior did turn out nicely.
swag :) thanks man.
Iguiniz.X Just plain modelling, no bumps or nothing.
Lorenzo This was discussed eralier, it is for insulation. The metal is to hold out the harsh weather and the wood to keep the warmth inside.
Zardoz Thanks!
Once again, I really appriciate your kind words. They fill me with energy and inspiration for the next challange around the corner.
