View Full Version : animation: Cane-Toad teaser
andrewsilke 08-06-2002, 03:50 AM I posted this up about a week ago but I think it may have been deleted due to the changing rules. Thanks to everyone who replied then.
For those of you who missed the thread... here is the teaser-trailer for our new short called Cane-Toad. Dave and I took 6 months off work unpaid to complete the final film. We plan to release the full film shortly. Until then have a look at the trailer at cane-toad.com (http://www.cane-toad.com).
We have also have had a few difficulties with bandwidth, so if the trailer does not download please try again later. I have also removed the link to the quicktime version that was quite large. If anyone really must see the quicktime version please e-mail me personally.
feedback is more than welcome :)
thanks
Andrew

I saw the post about this earlier on the DLF I only got around to viewing the teaser last night.
It is so rich and so aussie I love it.
Looks like you have painted every last poly of geometry in the scene.
And how can you beat a fart joke?
:buttrock:
rock on!
P.S. do you think other nationalities will get it? who cares! it will still be quirky and funny even if the cant see the satire in the content.

This is great. 5 stars *plop* Only crit is the animation on the hands looks a little unfinished. The poses you chose are so conservative that it looks a little stiff. I think you were going for sublte gestures but it would probably be a little more interesting if you mixed it up a little more (a couple closed or more varied poses). It would still feel subtle and I think it would loosen up the feel of the character at the same time (give you some room to really sell the beat gestures, like when he says "missing"). When are you gonna release it? I want to be the first in line to see it!!!!!!

Saw this on the DLF earlier too, and love it :)
A bit of background for non-Australians, the cane toad is a creature that was introduced into Australia to try to curb the problem of cane beetles eating sugar cane crops. However, it sort of backfired and now the cane toads themselves have multiplied out of control and are a menace of their own. They're generally filthy and disgusting IMO and tend to get used as makeshift golf balls or speed humps quite often.

Thats cool. I saw it about a week ago when some guys from cutting edge came to our uni.
I thought the animation was good, sort of stylised and snappy.
Who did the voice? I thought that was well done, really suits him...
yay brisvegas!
ill check back later, maybe ill have better luck with the download then. the still looks great though.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! :scream:
Man, that's EXCELLENT!
I LOOOOOOOOOOVE Aussie humour - most of my favourite comedies are Aussie ones (Muriels Wedding, Welcome To Woop-Woop, Mushrooms, Priscilla, The Castle), so I love this sort of thing :D
The fart is hysterical!
I love the way he is lounging in a pet's water and food bowl - nice detail!
He seems like a superb, typical Aussie character. Excellent work! I'm looking forward to seeing the whole thing!!!

Sorry everyone, you'll just have to be patient with our site. If there's too many people downloading at one time it just maxes out. There's nothing we can do short of finding a new host which we can't afford right now. If anyone knows of any good high bandwidth deals let me know.
cheers

WOW. The animation and modeling are great! :applause: I love the scene as well...lounging in a water dish...ha ha ha. My only thing is I could really understand him. Had such a strong accent and all. But I'm sure for your target audience it's fine. Again, great job on it and good luck.

I like this alot. Really good texturing and the character is really originally. The only thing that bothers me is the tub > it doesn't look that real (very plastic) > probably the color... Good work though!

The tub is supposed to be plastic looking, because its made out of plastic, Its a dog's food dish.
Great work to the both of you, and Salud to CGTalk.com for showcasing your thread as a banner.

Thanks everyone again for the feedback. :) To answer some questions, we made the short with Maya, it's about 3 1/2 mins long, and it'll be finished mid next week when the sound effects are complete. Not sure when we'll be able to put it on the web yet. Dave and I did all the 3d work, concept story etc. we were unpaid (self funded) and it took us about 6 months full time. We were lucky enough to have help with sound and we had it composited in Inferno by some friends of ours. We've rendered to HD 1920 x 960 so we're keen to get it to film but we'll need some funding for that. The voice was done by Paul Davies, he's a proffessional voice over guy who works in Brisbane. I find it funny that some people can't understand him :).
Here are some behind the scenes picks. The facial animation was created with bones driven via driven keys, it worked out pretty well, the animation interface operated much the same way as morph targets/blend shapes and it was quite fast. It's pretty hard to see in the picture but the bones are actually parented to locators in the center of the face which is why they appear to be floating.

Awesome work! The texture works very rich and the actings great youve really managed to project a personality into this guy with the little nuances and mannerisms.
Just curious as to how your going to promote the work then, is it going to be soley on the web or are you going to take round the festivals and such?

I agree, the lip sync seems a bit too choppy/strange. Nice model/texture work as well, the water looks a bit odd though. Almost a bit like a gel in appearance instead of water.

Wow! I just saw the complete film the other night at a short film festival in Melbourne. That is funny stuff. I loved Bazza's muted expletive to camera. Missed this when you originally posted it and was going to post the link myself.
Congrats on the award too, very much deserved.
oh yeah and the guts were great too. :p
