View Full Version : Char: Belphe
Athey 08-24-2004, 05:18 AM This is the first chance I've had to work on any 3D in a little over a week or two...
This guy I'm aquainted with on DA (Wen-M) recently drew this series of Angel & Demon images and they're simply amazing. I cracked a joke to him, that I'd love to model one of them, and he asked me if I were serious, and if I would please consider doing it ^ ^; So I am. heh...
I still have quite a bit of work left to do. I only started this today, but I guess I got pretty far considering.
The character is Belphe, an angel. Below you can see the reference picture that Wen drew. As you can tell it's got some rather intricateness to the design ^ ^;;; All that lacy stuff will be done with opacity maps.

I haven't even started on the wings yet... still trying to decide what would be the best approch, and whether or not I'm going to have them be movable like real wings, or if they'll just be stationary in the pose in the ref.
I also haven't started on the hair yet. That's mostly what's left to do.
Anyways, I don't know how much time I'll have to work on this, since I've got a part-time job now and I'm often very tired. o_O (shitty part-time retail work... gotta pay the bills) But I'm gonna do my best to work on it when I can.
C&C welcom as always ^_^

This is gonna look sweeeeet!
Really, really love the concept sketch - should look ace after the athey treatment!
Model looks excellent so far - i think her boobs are a bit gravity defying from the side, and her shorts / underwear shouldnt be bevelled in geometry due to their lightness.
Not sure on the wings either - they look really tricky to articulate...
Really looking forward to updates....
Angel wings are always hard to get looking good. I think it would be best to make them in pieces though. The base would be the nice cuving part that attackes to the back. I'd just follow the concept there. Next I'd make 3 or 4 curved boxes or plains that would fold out from the tip of the wing. Then i would add plains to use as feathers to give it mass.
Here is a rough example. You may have a better way, but this is the easiest way I know. If you come up with something better show us how you do it cause I personally could use it.
Anyway, I really think that the model is looking good, can't wait to see more.

No real progress so far. I did kind of start on the wings, but I'm still trying out several ideas, so I may scrap what I've got and try a different idea out later depending on how things progress.
Anyways, mostly I'm just posting this for the sake of showing the wires.

Shaping up very nicely.
I see some FFX2 influence in the original design...
All those intricate pieces are gonna be fun to make!

Sorry all the old pics are down. My old server isn't up at the moment...
Anyways, I thought I'd actually post an updated image since I do have one.

Don't know when I'm gonna have time to work on it again... I'd really like to finish it up and rig it at some point, but work keeps me rather busy.

I LOVE Wem-B's work. You definitely did it justice.

look pretty good overall. the wing resolution looks like it needs to be sharper. Belly button is a monster, make it smaller. Can you shorten up the sleave things so her hand can stick out more. The poor girl has no curves, she has the body of a young asian boy. Look at her thighs, she needs to eat. Nothing says lovin' than a big ol booty.

Nice job, especially on the textures.
Two things that sting my eyes thoug:
* your model's breasts are too big compared to the original concept
* the face of your model looks too angry
Look at the face in the concept art once again please. The chin is too strong as far as I can see. Another thing you can orient yourself on is the line upper forehead - nose - the tip of the chin. The problem there is the forehead is leaned to much to the back, it needs to be steeper. The nose is also a bit on the dominant side compared to the cute nose in the concept. The mouth thoug is too small in your model, look at the width of the mouth compared to the width of the nose in the concept vs. these proportions in your model.
Oh and another thing that's missing in your model is the sharp edge in the cloths on the shoulders.
Cheers.

Let's see... it's been a whopping FIVE MONTHS since I touched this model... Today I was especially bored and opened max on a whim. I looked through my directories and remembered that I'd never bothred to rig this model, so I did.
I wish I'd fixed some of the mesh before I did, but it didn't occur to me until it was already far too late. oh well.
I deem it done.

Looking great! The only crit I have is some of the textures ( the wings mainly ) seems kinda blurry, you might try sharpening, or darkening the lines you have painted. Also, on the body ( chest area ) where the clothing lays on the chest/stomach you may try adding some more depth to it.
But overall great work!

As said on 3dtotal.
There are what I would consider several problems with the modle vs the drawing by wen.
The tips of the wings where they begin to fold lack the detailing of those golden curves/horns/feathers. It just cuts off, and that just doesnt look good at all.
Something I missed last time - the bottom of the shoes seem to have a smoothing group problem.
The textures are very blurry, and theres banding across the wings, either from jpg compression, or the textures themselves. They also dont seem to match up with the drawing.
The skin colors are also muddy by comparason.
