erilaz 08-06-2002, 12:18 AM I thought of something majestic to do, with ideas of soaring wind and peaceful clouds. Something to take the breath away and bring life and inspiration to all....
Then I thought: WHY DON'T I JUST SHOOT SOMEONE OUT OF A CANNON? :D

Nice idea I'm sure, but if I was going to be shot out of a cannon, I'de choose a better hand signal. Im partial to the "Heavy Metal bull" or the "Rock on!" pose instead of the basic "Up up and away!" selection you have made.

Hey, thanks for the input already! I'll work on a hand signal once I get the idea moving!:D
Little concepty design stuff. Why is it I have all the nice 3d technology at hand, but can't take a decent shot of a drawing? (scanner's on the blink, so it's a digital camera for me!):
Crazy idea :)
He needs a rubber robe tied around his feet so that he can return! Or only one way tickets on your airline? ;)
PS: I thought of making a flying kitchen sink just for you - but havenīt decided on entering - yet

Go fo it Erilaz...

08-06-2002, 08:45 AM
Yay! More comments! I'm glad I'm getting a go-ahead for this one from you guys. I thought maybe it might be a bit boring.
OZ: I'm glad it's crazy, cause the guy in the cannon sure is!:surprised
Pit: You'd better enter. You could go NUTS with this challenge! Keep that sink on the ready...:D
levin and neilyB: Thanks a lot!
I've got a better idea of time frame now, so hopefully I'll be able to dish out something better than last time!:wavey:
Here's a start (and a very minimal start at that!)
erilaz
08-06-2002, 09:44 AM
Here's some work on a cauldron that's going on the base of the cannon.
Clanger
08-06-2002, 10:33 AM
I like the idea of the cauldron, perhaps you could have a pissed off witch wanting it back.
hypercube
08-06-2002, 10:59 AM
Awesome idea..definitely the roughest kind of 'flying machine' I can think of :D
One thing thought of, do you intend it to work or to blow up? Either one would be great, but something I recalled from the various episodes of junkyard wars where they built cannons is that you either need to scrounge one solid tube or reenforce it a heck of a lot.
Anyway that's prolly way too much realistic thought, love the hodge podge flavor, the cauldron is great..maybe he's a fed-up chef who went nuts and tore his kitchen apart to build the cannon :)
Look forward to the rest..hand-sign, rock-on.. :buttrock:
erilaz
08-06-2002, 11:14 AM
Go the cauldron! Thanks!
I love the idea of having some irate person wanting it back! Thanks for the suggestion guys!:D
Hypercube: This thing is going to be majorly reinforced. Ridiculously so. I'm hopefully going to make it look like the 803rd of 1000 attempts to fly!

Do you not fear the mighty boiling wrath? :D

Last bit of work to show for tonight. I don't want to overstep those new image posting restrictions!:surprised

hey erilaz, really cool concept and idea. i'll be watchin' you! :D
lucascerro
08-06-2002, 04:52 PM
Nice idea. I'd just reccomend that you do a little beveling on your edges... they're too hard. (just a little, not too much, on almost all the edges, so they will reflect a little light and look better. Look here: http://www.micro-intel.com/users/ypoissant/tutorials/bevels-intro.htm ). Or not.
- Lucas
don't know if someone has already hit this, but the handle for the cauldron is way too thin. That would hurt like f_ck to carry something like that. (haha, i cussed but its bleeped out so you can't tell!)
erilaz
08-06-2002, 08:44 PM
Hey everyone! Thanks for your comments! :D
derwolpertinger: I also will be watching yours studiously, if your last entry was anything to go by!!!
lucascerro: Yep, bevelling is in the works. I don't like to go through and bevel all those edges until I've got a nice block out of what the scene looks like. Cube up first, detail later! Thanks for the link though. I'll check it out!
goon: Hmmm... I'll take a closer look at that handle. I kinda like the wiry look to it (makes it look a bit more used and busted!), but you may be right. As for it hurting, I think the guy using the cannon has hurting under control!:D
Virtuoso
08-06-2002, 09:44 PM
Fun, Fun, Fun, and more fun, nice idea. Go for it Erilaz............Go all out, every little extra detail the better, indepth all the way, and with this fun concept it will be a real joy to see. :applause: :)
erilaz
08-06-2002, 09:47 PM
Thanks Virtuoso! As you say, I want to detail this up a heck of a lot.
Got to be careful I don't over do it, because I've still got the ends of this dang fever I had at the end of the last challenge!:annoyed:
And, like my last challenge, there'll be a story behind the image. I like stories!:D
KRUChY
08-06-2002, 10:55 PM
COOL concept, but don't forget parachute for this poor guy :applause:
erilaz
08-07-2002, 03:38 AM
Thanks KRUChY!
As mentioned by pit, there will be some form of bungie cord to get him back!
Aiming trajectory....
hey erilaz, looking kool, another great concept. Don't want to be a wanker but I hope it fits within the guidlines
1)"Must be flying contraption built for atmospheric flight"
I know it makes the pilot fly but is it a "flying contraption"?
I hope it is cause it's a great idea.
erilaz
08-07-2002, 06:58 AM
Hmmm... I argue that it IS built for atmospheric flight: The atmospheric flight of the guy being shot out!:D
To add to the suitability of the guidilines, the pilot will also be having small (albeit useless) wings strapped to his back, so I guess this JUST slides in as suitable.
I'll ask the moderators! (Unless they're watching me now...)
ha ha, they are always watching mwhahahaha ha.
I reckon u'll be ok if the pilot has the contraption strapped to him. Hope so.
erilaz
08-07-2002, 11:23 AM
Yeah HellRender, I'm checking this out with lildragon. The logic behind the cannon works for the rules though, as it is part of the flying contraption. The actual thing to fly in the atmosphere will be the pilot (via explosion), but he will also have wings, which suits rule 6:
6) A character (pilot, mechanic or spectator) is optional. The emphasis is on the vehicle. The character can be made as part of the contraption though (as wearing a jetpack)
If I can't do it, I've got a contingency plan.
Meanwhile, here's some updates!

08-07-2002, 11:40 AM
:bounce:wow YUR FAST.
Cool ideaa and also cool with the safe at the back of the cannon.
made out all kind of things
gg hope to c more and I thnk I will
Wow - guess the feverīs gone for good! -> if u keep up that speed youīll have this finished by next week!!! Looks great, erilaz!
erilaz
08-07-2002, 11:56 AM
Thanks guys! :D
Iguiniz.X. : The safe at the back is going to be filled with coal to set the burner that will heat the cauldron that will fire the cannon!I love chain reactions!
Pit: Unfortunately, no, the fever hit me again. Keeps creeping up on me. I wish I could get rid of the stupid thing so I could go and see my girlfriend! (Don't want to give her this nasty virus!)
erilaz
08-07-2002, 08:45 PM
You go for it Hellrender!:)
Yay!:D
A little support for my cannon here:
erilaz
08-07-2002, 08:47 PM
For thoe interested, the above is a large screw-pole. Not sure what these are actually called!:D And for those that care, yes, I'm modelling every nail!:surprised Hmm... need to start bevelling those planks I just realised!
hypercube
08-07-2002, 08:52 PM
My what a large..screw-pole you have..are you sure they're staring at your knees on the tram? :)
Looking cool, I like the thought out yet half ass crackpot nature of it, it's like he figured out some things like bracing it with the safe, but not that it'll keep blowing him to smithereens each time :D
erilaz
08-07-2002, 10:04 PM
Exactly Hypercube! I'm pretty much going for a sense of it's been rebuilt so many times, he really doesn't know what he's doing anymore!
Tee hee hee! It took me a moment to realise you were talking about the comment I made on Pit's thread! Yes, we get some weird people in Melbourne.... VERY weird.:surprised :D
erilaz
08-08-2002, 03:49 AM
Bit more concept while rendering. This cannon will be on the outer balcony of a huge gothic mansion!!:D
erilaz
08-08-2002, 03:51 AM
And of course, our mad friend who will take to the skies! (Rather forcefully):D

08-08-2002, 04:24 AM
nice one, looks very home made, looks a bit phallic but anyway.
erilaz
08-08-2002, 04:28 AM
All cannons look phallic!
But believe me, it won't look anything near phallic by the time I'm finished destroying it!:D
erilaz
08-08-2002, 08:59 AM
Here's a bit more insane support for the cannon. The pulleys are welded wheels taken from a shopping trolley!:D
erilaz
08-08-2002, 12:08 PM
Thanks hellrender once again!
Now what true cannon system would not employ a tennis-net safety device?:D Oooh! And what's in that safe? You can see it's open now!!
derwolpertinger
08-08-2002, 12:53 PM
he erilaz, comin along cool!:buttrock: only thing that bugs me a bit are the damn hard edges, just bevel them a fair bit to add more realism. :)

08-08-2002, 01:07 PM
Comming along nicely.... I hope you are going to pad the 'pilots' head so he doesn't get too hurt.....

erilaz
08-09-2002, 03:00 AM
Whee! Thanks Taoizm!!:D
It's good to know my idea kinda works!
Oh and the beveled edges are coming soon!!
Here's some basic blocking out for the mansion the cannon will jutt out from. I won't be working on the house for a while, so I just thought I'd give you a general impression.
robertp
08-09-2002, 04:36 AM
That will look great once your done. Is someone expected to live though that flight? That cannon is the biggest one i have seen. Just dont put a wall right next to it.
Rob:D

08-09-2002, 02:08 PM
Yaaaah, isn't that nice!!??!
THIS IS INSANE!! :insane: And insanely great!!!! What i would like to see is a pile of matresses in front of that mansion .... just in case! But i guess: no kitchen sink - no matress! ;)

08-09-2002, 04:29 PM
LOL!!! Very cool!!! Now this is what I call a master contraption!!!
Great job!
erilaz
08-11-2002, 11:06 AM
Whee! Wow, such lovely support! Thanks everyone!:D
robertp: No wall in front, but plenty of blasted wall behind!! I hope it GETS done. I've set myself a pretty high target with this one (no pun intended).
torbjorn: Thanks! :D
pit: As always, you outdo yourself with suggestions. I shall certainly put matresses in, just for you!:wavey:
Ragnarok: Now cut that out! I'm blushing!
No update just yet, but let me tell you this:
If you want an EXQUISITE reference on making period-style buildings, get your hands on a copy of the Period Home Renovator Buyers Guide. Everything is in great blue-print style presentation with multiple angles and examples.
Perfect for my mansion!!
I hope to update tonight!:wip:

08-11-2002, 11:47 AM
Just starting to shape this out. I want to pock-mark the balcony floor with holes from failed tests. Please excuse my dirt-filtered procedural bump!!:hmm:
Oh, and for those that craved, I've finally beveled those support planks!:D
I laugh everytime i visit your cannon :) and i DEMAND an animation of the guy flying!!! Coming along great - i look forward to the matresses and your next move!!

08-11-2002, 01:03 PM
Hey Pit! Well, I AIM to please! AhahAAAAHAAAHAAA! Ooooh hoo hoo.... ahem. Oh mercy!:D (Well, my bad puns have hit a new all time low. How embarrassing!)
A bit of pipe work from the safe to the cauldron. Since it's a heat-chamber, he's also got his kettle on the top for making tea.:)
And look! It's not the default teapot either!! :D

08-11-2002, 01:39 PM
Poll: Who would you most like to see fired out of the cannon.?????
Lukashi
08-11-2002, 03:17 PM
A tiny miget =p
erilaz
08-12-2002, 09:12 AM
Oooh Poll hey? Keep them coming in, if I can model them I might just do them!! :D Great idea KayosIII! Personally I'd like to see someone you'd never expect, like Gandhi, or the Loch Ness Monster!
Lukashi: Well, my current pilot is sort of small. There's too many midgets being blown out of cannons these days.:p
Axie: Micheal Jackon is a perfect candidate. Not because I don't like him (I like Gandhi and the Loch Ness Monster too!), but because I can picture him being shot out of a cannon, and smile. :D
But while the suggestions and comments come in, here is some work on the CURRENT pilot! It's for all you wireframe junkies who like to see base progression.:wavey:
Ok - iīll give it a shot <- hehheh - what about Danni de Vito: heīs got the proportions of a cannonball ! Or if not human a hedgehog - will hurt on impact!
erilaz
08-12-2002, 11:09 AM
Okay! A bit more work on the pilot. Not sure I like the way this guy is turning out. Llet me know if I'm right!:surprised
It needs a loth of work...
I can't really see a helmet YET.....but I am sure it will come.....:)
keep going:thumbsup:
erilaz
08-12-2002, 11:18 AM
Thanks bigB! Yes, you're right it DOES need a lot of work!!
Oh and Pit, (sorry, missed you on the other page), Danny DeVito would be great. Maybe even that guy with the moustache from NYPD Blue. I like the hedgehog idea!:D
fellah
08-12-2002, 11:22 AM
what do you wan't the character to look like? cartoon, real, somewhere inbetween? what do YOU think about it right now and what are you planning to add/fix?
I might have a few tips for you but I must know how you wan't it to look like first..
but maybe I should just wait until a later stage before I crit? might be to early to throw you crits right now, i don't know..
great idea with the cannon btw, turning out really cool to! but I would try to _model_ the bricks on the floor if I where you :wip:
keep it up!
Ragnakim
08-12-2002, 11:49 AM
Damn!!! Your crazy!!! Your modeling an entire castle!!!!! lol!! Congrats!!! Your doing a great job!!! :applause:
erilaz
08-13-2002, 08:54 AM
Thanks guys, I really appreciate the crits, because it's the only way I'll get better!:D
fellah: You're right of course. I want a cartoony look for my character and it's not coming out the way I want it. I may go back to the drawing board. :hmm: Oh, and yes, the bricks will be modelled (with a touch of bump) eventually. Just using it as a grounding to give a feel for the floor.
Ragnarok: Well, I won't be modelling the ENTIRE caste/mansion, that would be crazy in the time I've got left. I'm just modelling the facing sides to give atmosphere. Thanks for the comments, and yes, I AM crazy!:D :wip:
erilaz
08-13-2002, 09:06 AM
If you've been wondering what the rough planky-looking sides of the cannon are going to be (come on, I know you have. It's been keeping you up at night), they are going to be stolen road signs plated to wood. I plan on texturing this one if I get time.
Okay! I hope you find this RIVETTING... oh dear. Stop me please.
:scream:
KayosIII
08-13-2002, 11:21 AM
Hey thats looking really good. I aint standing anywhere near that thing when it goes off.
Even fruit cannon make me nervous.
erilaz
08-13-2002, 11:42 AM
KayosIII, what da heck is a fruit cannon? :surprised
Let me guess, it fires fruit? Thanks for the praise!
Well, here's a little addition. In a frustrated attempt to find more wooden support for his cannon, my pilot has dragged the pool table from the main billiard hall in the mansion and hey presto!:D
Clanger
08-13-2002, 11:51 AM
Brilliant, love the pool table.
There sure is going to be a lot of angry people wanting their property back.
KayosIII
08-13-2002, 12:32 PM
A fruit canon is typically made of PVC sewer pipe... a barrel about the diameter of a medium orange.... this is joined to a t-section piece of pipe that is about 5 in in diameter.... a device that causes a spark is placed it the top of the T junction and a lid on the back...
To fire the cannon you load a piece of fruit into the barrel.fill the T section with WD40 and close the lid... you then activate the spark causing device. It makes a hell of a bang and sends a piece of fruit a hell of a long way....

haha.... we got a regular anarchists cookbook here :) All the ingredients of a potato gun :D
erilaz
08-13-2002, 08:36 PM
Thanks Clanger! If I had the time I'd model all the people wanting their stuff back!
That's a detailed description KayosIII! I take it you've made one of these before.:D
I remember the anarchists cookbook! I was too paranoid to try any of the dangerous formulae therein however. Probably a good thing, as I still have both my eyebrows to this day!:D

08-14-2002, 04:32 AM

Maybe your cannon ball dude should have an assitant. Somebody have to press the launch button!!
erilaz
08-14-2002, 09:10 AM
Thanks Fedron! Hmmm... an assistant would be a good idea... or maybe I'll have a sophisticated pulley system to the lever so it is able to be pulled from the mouth of the cannon!:D
What do people think? Assistant or remote operation?:bounce:

08-14-2002, 11:35 AM
So? When can u post us a render with GI? :D
erilaz
08-14-2002, 11:53 AM
GI? I care not for GI!!! :D
Maybe I will if I can get time to tweak GI correctly in brazil.
Meanwhile, here's a little glass work I've been doing. Is it any good? It's supposed to be a leadwork representation of Icarus, but I'm red-green colourblind, so I'm not sure if it looks right in the colours. Need to tweak!:wip:

And that GI for Ragnarok!! Hope you like it!:D
erilaz
08-18-2002, 11:33 AM
More work on my pilot. At this stage I'm going for a berwildered lost look. I have to find a look for him that fits the rules though!
Lorenzo
08-18-2002, 02:26 PM
but maybe, you should try a different variation in brazil, it look very aliazing, and not antialiazed, in the skyline parameter and the bounes parameter, it could be better.
noce to see you again in this challenge:applause:
erilaz
08-18-2002, 08:54 PM
Thanks lorenzo! I agree that my settings need to be tweaked. I merely put the brazil render up for prosperity!:D I haven't got the time to do a large high-sampled GI render. It would take all night on my PC, and it crashes on my dual at work!:annoyed:
Ahhh well, maybe for a few later. I guess my PC won't explode overnight if I let it sit and render a couple of better ones.
Little mansion work.... Not much to see here.
Aearon
08-18-2002, 09:00 PM
lol what a crazy idea...shooting someone out of a cannon? i like it ;)
i think you don't have to model the church/mansion(?) all-around, you should decide from which perspective to view the scene and just model the part of the church that will be seen in greater detail
i imagine a good perspective would be "over-the-shoulder" behind the cannon, looking at the big window
if you go for this perspective, you could model some more detail in that area, you get the point :)
erilaz
08-18-2002, 09:29 PM
Thanks fist! It's good to get some crits!:D
Yeah, the mansion will not be modelled all the way around. Now that I have the towers in place, I'll only be concentrating on the inner part of the mansion balcony. The shots I'm setting up are for the side of the cannon, an upward shot at the tower, a downward shot from inside the tower window, and a back shot to show the cannon and the stained-glass window.
For the moment, I'm back working on the cannon!
erilaz
08-20-2002, 01:24 PM

I've found doing the laces quite easy (Just a rendered spline). I'm still not sure about the assistant, as I don't know if I'll have time. The next time I can work on this will be Sunday night.
Hi Erilaz - your character is very funny!! Crit: his body and arms/hands seem to flat - really needs a little more volume!
I donīt think he needs an assistant - heīs rather a guy wanting to pull this of by himself. What about (barrels with) gunpowder- heīd only have to light a cord!
Waiting for update ( and matresses!)!! Guess iīll have to wait till sunday :annoyed:
blakboks
08-22-2002, 07:12 AM
Looking good...looking good...
try this on for size, see if ya like it much: have you ever considered putting faux-wings on the guy?...kinda like a flying squirrel. I'm assuming that he's going for distance on this...and i'm sure sky-diver-like wings would help retard his free-fall.
Later.
erilaz
08-22-2002, 11:27 PM
Whee! Comments are always good!:D
Pit: Matresses are on their way bud! I'm not home again until Sunday, so I've got a valid excuse! :p I think I agree with you on the assistant thing. That's kind of why I put the mirror in, so he's got something work with. I'll be adding a ladder to the mouth of the cannon, so the guy can climb in. And yeah, lots to tweak on that character yet!:wip: :D
blakboks: Wings will be on the character, but really really tiny, like childrens fairy wings. I want to give them a sense of utter uselessness. I may even have one of the wings broken off and hanging by a thread.
Cause let's face it, this guy has no idea what he'd doing!!:surprised

08-26-2002, 12:19 PM
Still no matresses yet! :hmm:
But here's an idea of what I'm heading to. I had a nice long stroll the other day and grabbed many textures!
The cannon (as mentioned previously) will be made of stolen signs bolted together in layers. :D

Bit of an update.

Another angle. The chains will support the cannon. So you think I should make them sag, or be really taut?
I'm starting to think my heart isn't in this one. Feel like I'm plodding along.
he he very funny character, and very homemade look of the cannon!(i love the table:) )

Hey there erilaz, how's it going? Well, well, things are shaping up well here I see. I like what you did with the character (hehehe, love the wings). You said you feel like you are plodding along, well then, how about creating three common objects (things that would look good piled up together, example, chairs, couch, barrels, tv's, etc. ) and squish everthing underneath the canon so it looks like it's holding it up (there should be no empty space). Clone, change size, warp and do whatever it takes to make it look like even more objects
You have already started on this theme, but you just need to model a few more objects for cloning.
Then, you will have one large junk pile, a ladder to the top, and your rather good looking man, ready to be shot into the heavens heheheh. That should be rather interesting:)
Otherwise, things are coming along, just keep at it pal :wip: :wip: :wip:

Apt Pupil says it all, lots of junk every where, piled high and then some. The imaginative use of junk is the best part of this machine so keep adding.

WOW! Thanks guys! I didn't expect that!:D
OZ: Thanks for the comment! I like the way my character is turning out too! Keep your's going (you've got the most views out there pal!)
Apt Pupil: You're absolutely right. I've been meaning to junk it up a bit, but haven't thought the time prudent. I'll get onto it!:D
Oh, and you'd better get yours finished too, because it absolutely rocks!
Clanger: Thanks! I suppose that's why I made the balcony floor so large, to fill it up with stuff!

Whee! Not really an update, just wanted opinion.
I wanted to just weld the chain to the screwpole here, like this. Does it just look too "placed"? I was thinking maybe I'll tie it there with string instead.
Any crits on that?:D

Stuff for the table.
Just to let you know, this is not a rip-off of Apt Pupil's idea, I was planning to do the pilot's design drawing stuff on the table from the get-go.
And let's face it, I couldn't beat Apt Pupil's effort anyway!:D
Here we go:

How it's looking so far. I've just realised what the date is, and I've realised there is no way I'll be finishing this challenge on time!!:annoyed:
Ah well, I've always said the thing about these challenges is not to finish or to win, but to learn, and I learn a lot!!:D

Whee! I love doing 3d! :bounce:
Excuse my random outburst of joy, but I just realised how much I really enjoy this!!:D
Naturally, since my pilot has had many failed attempts, he has decided he didn't have enough pipes. More pipes obviously means more propulsion.... doesn't it?:surprised

Okay... this one may be hard to explain...
Here goes!
This is the lever that fires the cannon. Since the pilot doesn't have an assistant, he's pulling it himself, via a series of pulleys, which then drapes down onto a ready loop for him to release.

Eeep! Wrong pic!
THIS is the lever, the above pic is the cord the pilot pulls to get the lever to work!:D
Thats tops mate ;) I wish I had the skills to enter these comps ... maybe next month ;)

Thanks Fetus23!:D
I'm attempting to do 3-4 renders for the final:
1) At his desk hammering something
2) Looking up at his creation with his hand on the ladder
3) In the cannon, hands curled around the rim of the cannon mouth
4) The inevitable flying!:D
While I'm posting, can anyone tell me if particle systems/atmospheric effects are against the rules? I just want to add smoke/steam to my pipes.

This is the set up for my first shot. No time for textures unfortunately!:hmm:
Aptly titled "Back to the drawing board":D

Second shot set up.
You may have noticed my lever has gone. Some of my recent files got corrupted. Dang it! :scream:

And shot 3. I know I said 4 shots before, but I think 3 will be enough!
Now All I have to do is work on these shots! I'd work on the actual scene objects a bit more, but I haven't got time.

Bit of detail testing. I took the background photo in my home town of Castlemaine!:D
The particles here I'm still working on. Want to get a chunky-esque explosion happening.

No more of this challenge for me, I'm afraid.:hmm:
I've too many things to do over the next 24 hours, so I'm not going to have time to work on a finished piece.
If I get time, I will try to render up something to squeeze in, but otherwise, this is it for me!
Thanks all for the support on this one, it's been fun and I've learnt a lot! I'll see you all at next month's challenge! :wavey:

i guess if in some post-apocalyptical future someone would want to go somewhere far th first idea would be to shoot himself with a canon...NOT!!!
Love the concept. Good work man.:bounce:

Thanks once again!:D
It's seems I may have the creativity in my head, but not enough talent to get it out well yet! More challenges will set me straight over time, I'm sure.
Still can't wait for the next one!!:bounce:
