I have a head model that i have been trying to get symettrical for about an hour now.. I cut half the head and mirror it, but the points are merging.. I have merge points checked in mirror options.. ARGGHGHG this is pissing me off bad...

You've not really given much info to help you with except to take those points that are merging off the x=0 point.
Sounds like you have points in the nose, for example, that aren't in the middle but whose (subd) point hits x at 0. Muck up the nose for a moment and move the points you don't want to merge off x = 0.

And, so far, this still isn't about symmetry. :p Not yet, at least.

well even when i have symettry activated and i do say a smooth shift to bring down the neck area the points just go all outta wack... I will try to fix my points in poly mode and see if that helps it out.. thanks for the reply.. I will hopefully be able to fix this...

ok now here is exactly what is happening..

I cut my model in half..
Selecting only the points that should lie near the x=0 axis i set value to them and make sure that they are lining up on the x axis..
after that i perform a mirror operation, to mirror the other geometry over..

My problem is that no matter if i'm in sub-d mode or poly mode the points are not merging.. I have done this before a million times and never had this trouble...

im not sure what your trying to say so heres a few general tips on it

When you mirror its good to turn off the merge option if you have a dense mesh. or a mesh when points cluster close to each other.

Why. lw will merge other undersired points during the mirror function

Doing it manualy does take long just select all the points on both halfs of the head hit the m k for merge key and that should do it

lastly lw does not create sysmetry maps so the symettry mode i have found is best for moving pionts and doing some modeling when you do things like a smooth shift ...adjust the ofset manually

Does your model have endomorphs? If you have morphs where points in the centerline move then they won't merge because that would destroy the morph. If you don't have morphs then, you got me.

If you used an enomorph to lay out a UV map ala some tutorials out there you will find that when you go to merge that the broken up geometry in the endomorph will stop the base from merging as well. It took me a while to figure this out and it was not immediately obvious.

THats exactly what it is.. i made an endomorph for texturing purposes.. How would i fix that, just delete the endomorph???

BINGO.... Thanks Big Jay thats exactly what it was.. i went in and deleted the endomorph, and the mirror worked fine.. Thanks again..
