Wasn't around for the last contest but I'm in for this one:

Here's my first brain storm:

Clanger

An alternative to the bath tub is a sort of Arabian taxi.

Clanger
08-06-2002, 12:00 AM
What about an Orc powered Helecopter?

Clanger
08-06-2002, 12:03 AM
Far from happy with any of these yet. Will sleep on it and hope for a suitable dream. The only thing I'm sure of (possibly) is I want it human or creature powered.

Clanger
08-06-2002, 12:23 AM
Can't sleep so here's another idea.
Rodent power.

Clanger
08-06-2002, 12:59 AM
Yet another, no idea which way I'm going to go.

Lukashi
08-06-2002, 01:09 AM
check out some michalengelo pictures of his flying machines, might help you out, good start :)

dmcgrath
08-06-2002, 01:10 AM
TOTALLY DO THE RODENT POWER ON MAN!!!!!!

That would be soo funny.

Clanger
08-06-2002, 07:52 AM
Lukashi: Didn't realise Michaelangelo designed flying machines. Your not thinking of Leonardo Da Vinci are you? Saw his exhibition at the Science Museum, didn't take any pictures though.

[B]dmcgrath: [B] Your the only vote so it will be powered by some sort of animals in a wheel, I'm leaning towards wild boar.

Clanger
08-06-2002, 08:56 AM
Right it's getting clearer in my head. I'm going for wild boar power. Lift provided by gas filled pigs bladders.
Basic sketch below.
Structure will be lashed together bamboo. Anyone know of a web page showing the construction of things made out of bamboo?

erilaz
08-06-2002, 09:29 AM
Tee hee! Pigs bladders!

Probably the best thing to search for is stuff on bamboo rafts and houses. Heaps of stuff on images.google.com.

Clanger
08-06-2002, 10:43 AM
Had a look on google and there's tons of reference on bamboo construction, keeps me happy, thanks.
On the first search page there was a bamboo coffin!!!

Clanger
08-06-2002, 01:29 PM
Right I'm on my way.
Last post today as there's a beer festival calling me

MikaelPersson
08-06-2002, 05:46 PM
Looks like skilled people. Could you explain the construction closer? Are they going to run around in there, or are thier anuses just going to be connected to a device extracting gases?

Virtuoso
08-06-2002, 10:03 PM
Real cool idea Clanger..............I too am considering Bamboo to a extent for part of my creation...........Here is a link to a place that constructs with bamboo, including the eiffel tower all with bamboo ........... no kidding, I'll see you around, looks promising go for it.............

i really like the bamboo frame you have... looks very organic, and i think that is going to offer a better aesthetic to this topic than mechanical parts. although, i have to say that the whole pig-gas thing is not really appealing, but it is definitely creative. i don't really see how pig bladders would produce gas though. :p good work so far!

Clanger
08-07-2002, 10:04 AM
Mikael P. The hogs will run around in the giant hamster wheel and a was thinking of some sort of methane collection device (waste not want not)

Virtuoso Thanks for thoose links. amazing stuff.

WhatItIsIs The pig bladders are for storing the gas, not so many years ago it was a popular material for the inside of soccer balls.

Update.
I'm so glad I choose something that needs hundreds of little straps!

TiKiMoN
08-07-2002, 06:38 PM
still lovin' it! the straps add even that much more detail... nice work, however tedious it must have been!

Yes....I agree TiKiMoN...but look soo cool.;)

MikaelPersson
08-07-2002, 08:42 PM
Yes, will be interesint to see this one. Hundreds of small rope attachments everywhere. Will make a nice detailed construction.

Clanger
08-09-2002, 09:38 AM
TiKiMoN: Thanks for the vote of confidence, hope I can live up to it.

-OZ-: I hope it will be cool

Mikael P.: That's the plan lot's of ropes and pulleys.

Well I wasn't around yesterday but I'm back and keen to put some hours in so expect an update later today.

nice piece thus far, are you going all bamboo?? This is coming along great, the texture helps it alot as well, key the idea juices flowing, its coming along, very interesting idea I must say too!

thats really cool so far. can't wait to see how it flys

Clanger
08-12-2002, 10:31 AM
TheSEL: Yes, everything that can be bamboo will be. This machine is going to be built pre metal era. I plan for it to be piloted by a couple of Neanderthals.

jtk77: At the moment the plan is for it not to be a very successful flight. A mid catastrophe composition is on the cards (if I've time after completing the model.)

Should be able to devote a good 4-5 hours today so I hope for a major update later today.

i've been checking your WIP..it's very impressive. The amount of work you're having here it's really amazing! You're going to have knightmares with all those 'bamboobands' things tying everything...that's one herculean job!!

prayas
08-12-2002, 10:09 PM
That's F****** awesome. In that time you do all these straps someone could have written a plugin on this.

How about rendertimes and polycount? Just for information.
How would your bamboobomber be powered?
Mice? other little animal?

P..:

Clanger
08-12-2002, 10:59 PM
Zardoz: Yes, those straps could end up being a problem I hope my machine is still talking to me by the end.

prayas: Excellent my first expletive, if only there was a plugin.
Polycount is currently around 450,000
Full GI render 30mins at 640x480, haven't tried a standard scanline for a while but a expect it to be a lot faster.
Wild boar powered.

08-12-2002, 11:08 PM
Looking nice. So detailed.
What are your plans for the front?

Clanger
08-12-2002, 11:20 PM
Mikael P.: I'm currently working on the Pilots seat which will full up some of the space in front.
Then I'll need some sort of rudders behind the fans and control linkages from the Pilots controls.

nice detail clanger

erilaz
08-13-2002, 12:09 PM
Really top notch work Clanger! I love the light look it has. So much bamboo!!

You should put something insanely heavy on it, like a rhinoserous wearing full plate-mail juggling anvils.:D

Clanger
08-13-2002, 12:19 PM
erilaz: It will have a fair amount of weight on board, 2 very muscular neandethals plus bits and bobs depending on time available and rendering power.

Small update:

freemind77
08-13-2002, 12:27 PM
WOW such details , it looks very realistic because these connections looks like they would realy work! impressed ! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I've been working on the business end so I thought a render from that angle was in order.

You can actually steer it now.

Baal
08-16-2002, 03:56 PM
Impressive work, you're insane to put all theses little straps and stuff! How high is the poly count at render time?

Keep working at it!

This will be the real flying cumbancha that Mr. Burns talked about to Mr. Smithers... Very nice modeling :)

08-16-2002, 05:40 PM
I love this thing! The bamboo construction is something I had thought of, but you took it way beyond anything I had in mind. I especially like the fact that you've put thought into how it would actually work were it real.

Killer job.

Thanks for the comments on my aircraft.
Now to your's, all I can say is Gilligan's Island!
Pretty cool. How does it fly? It looks like it would be a great boat but what makes it fly? Is it more like a helicopter or what?
Either way it looks great. Good job.

Clanger
08-16-2002, 06:58 PM
Baal: 600k ish so still managable, I'm hoping not to go much over 1 million when I've finished.

paconavarro: You must be talking about 'the simpsons' but I've no idea what a 'cumbancha' is, Sorry for my ignorance.

chuckmoser: It's kind of grown beyond what I had in mind as well!

road: Cheers.

swag Could be right there, I have made varous parts different lengths and slightly out of alignment but to really bust it up would take a lot more polys, not sure yet whether I can afford.it.

MDB101: Yes a do, exactly what I had in mind.

Clanger
08-16-2002, 07:01 PM
Phazak: You sneaked in when I was composing the last post.
It will have ballons holding it up and in the wheel at the back there will be a pair of warthogs running for all they're worth.

prayas
08-18-2002, 12:26 PM
how many passenger do you like to put on this one?
The warthog idea is as cool as the rest of the concept.

Already got f***** up with those laces and little part?

But this make the question come up. What will the second people on this flying device do? Sit around and watch the wathogs runnin' ? Or will he have a function on this vehicle.

just one thing... update it..:p

Clanger
08-20-2002, 10:28 PM
prayas Draxiv: Still undecided what the 1 passenger will be doing, I've got a few ideas, it'll depend on what times left.

Virtuoso : Thanks.

Prisoner: I've got a cloth simulator running at the moment, if it finishes in time I'll have an update ready.

erilaz
08-20-2002, 11:26 PM
What cloth sim do you use? Just thought I'd ask while you're filling in time waiting for it to finish simulating!:D

Clanger
08-20-2002, 11:46 PM
erilaz: Simcloth. Works so well I don't see the point in buying a pay for one.

Update:

Far from happy with the rope net over the balloons, working on changing it now.

adr
08-21-2002, 10:44 PM
hi man , looks impressive so far but i have some doubts about the quality of the rope net . its not looks natural . maybe with more segments you can fix it,

Great bamboo work!!!!!

Clanger
08-21-2002, 11:49 PM
adr : Working on it, here's this latest net.

dark_lotus
08-22-2002, 03:55 AM
The detail is phenominal, Although, remember that there is no textures in the comp.

Try experimenting with one big balloon. It might look good.

Clanger
08-22-2002, 10:48 AM
dark_lotus: There isn't any textures anymore, just colour and bump.
I've lot's of ideas about different balloon configurations but I'm running out of time. I need to start on the pilot badly.

Last flying contraption post until the pilots completed. Hopfully there will be time after to refine it, there's lot's I want to do.

adr
08-22-2002, 05:58 PM
the rope net is perfect man , is looking good

freemind77
08-22-2002, 06:05 PM
looking neat! but my C+c is , that ropes should be bended and relaxed when they are heavy-laden by the construction beneath.
keep up!:bounce:

Clanger
08-23-2002, 02:17 PM
adr: Didn't look too perfect seeing it fresh in the morning so I've had another go.

freemind77: I've stretched the net a lot more so I hope it now looks like it's under real tension.

I said the last post was the last until I've finished the pilot, I lied, couldn't resist playing with the netting again. Next time will be the pilot..... possibly.

pabbloz
08-23-2002, 10:25 PM
great! the net and the ballons now look really nice! (althought the ballons seem potatoes! :D ) but it's a pretty well done job!

waiting more! ;) (it's so easy say it... :p )

note: the stones are a great idea! really funny!
note II: how have you done the net? I think it's really difficult!

prayas
08-24-2002, 12:16 PM
1. really good progress in this thread. you was one of the first who joined in and developed a pretty cool concept.

2. for that net thing. i figured out out how easy it is in max compared to my fav. app C4D.

3.???? what are these balloons? I remember some organic bubbles filled with some gas in Titan A.E. Seen that movie? reminds me alot of these pods? don't know the right english word for it.

Man!!! Impressive work... :applause: :applause: :applause:

Wich render are you using? 3dsmax5 native gi or another one?

Clanger
08-26-2002, 10:27 AM
pabbloz: The net was done with a cloth simulator. I attached dummy objects to the six points you see and animated them into position. I then chose the best looking frame and converted to mesh to freeze it.
To get the net look I used the 'lattice' plugin (can't remember where I got it from) this plugin converts every vertex to a sphere and every edge to a cylinder.

prayas : The baloons where meant to be blown up pigs bladders but not sure how I'm going to get the right look without textures or transparency.

tuba3d: Final Render.

Net Animation (http://www.rgore.plus.com/CGTalk/Flying Machine/cloth.mov)

Right, here's a rough view of my pilot to be. Body mostly cribbed from a character sheet I found on 'Anatomy Pictures for Artist ' web site.
