View Full Version : Is it Possible to make a Sub Surface Scattering shader for the Maya Renderer?
Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone knows if its possible to download or make yourself a SSS shader that will work in the Maya default render. Trying to avoid using Mentalray at the mo, to keep the render time down, just using Maya render and Gi Joe for lighting.
Cheers,
Chris

when did you imagine the equation mentalray = slow render time... :D

That link is great, decent SSS shader, thank you :applause: . Is there some way of building a SSS shader in Maya 6 with out the need of mel scripting knowlage etc? also, is there a SSS shader out there that has transparancy (so you can see if you put objects inside the mesh etc, ) the shader above doesn't seem to allow any transparency.
if there is a shader for mental ray that would be cool too.
Cheers,
Chris. :D

Hehe, what you need to do is discover the Maya Rendering sub forum!!
There have been about 5 different SSS shaders for Mental Ray (two with versions for the Maya Software renderer I think) and there are probably 20+ threads on them. A few of them definitely support the transparency you're looking for.
You can pipe the shader to surface shader with transparency.
Or use other shader for maya, www.lightengine3d.com

Hey,
Thanks all, the light engine 3d looks awsome, some good pics in the gallery. Can't seem to get it working in maya 6 tho, the shader just comes out black at rendering. doh. is this a maya 6 prob or am doing something dum. i'm guessing the latter. lol. Had s go at rectifing this prob but no luck, it seems to have loaded in fine, can use it fine, just won't render right.
Any ideas as what it doin?
Thanks again for your help,
Cheers,
Chris. :D
If you are using this plugin from lightengine 3d, on your light you will see new option, which defines which lights influence ss. Just click it on,
and it want be black anymore. It's on the same place where you define if lights gives diffuse and specular light or not.
Hope this helps :)

download the bonus tools available for maya 6.0 from alias.com. After installing them you can load the skin shader plugin that comes with the bonus tools. It gives u the SSS feature.
Hey,
Thanks chaoticreality, i'll check that out. And well spotted Als, the sss is now working with light engine, got a new prob tho, it gives a nice sss effect but seams to render the poly sphere etc i tested it on with a kind of flat shading, can see the polygons (looks like a disco ball) even tho the sphere is smooth and looks fine in other renders, any ideas why it would do that, it does the same with any other mesh, wierd.
Anyway, Thanks again people.
Cheers,
Chris.

I know you didnīt want to use mental ray, but if you somehow change your mind, the official mental ray SSS shaders from mental images are also available at alias.com. You get access to many different types of SSS in this package, some physically correct and painfully slow, and others not correct, but fast and good-looking..
Alas.... I have been waiting for a decent SSS since I stopped using max and vray :)
Thanks MrBullseye,
i'll have to check that out.
Still wondering if anyone has been able to get lightengine 3d sss working in maya 6 without a wierd flatshaded effect on the mesh?
Cheers,
Chris.
