View Full Version : Community Group Portrait

Sir Patroclo and Supervlieg had the great idea of making a big group portrait of our cozy little community. So that's what we are going to do here.

What do you need to do?
Make a selfportrait: real face or avatar.
Pose: from the waist up, frontal, camera at eye height, no heavy perspective. To make sure all portraits have the same perspective.
Lighting: frontal.
Style: whatever. This will be a mess on styles anyway.

Files: post an example jpeg to show the forum members what you did and a link to a 600x800 RGB PSD file, in 1 transperent layer without a background. I am not going to take out 120 backgrounds.
Your PSD file must have a name that matches your CG Talk nickname. In my own case that would be jeroentje.psd.

Deadline: Friday September 17 2004.

Both files are to be posted in this same thread before the deadline. Don't post WIP's.
Your first post is your final entry. When your PSD doesn't download or is corrupted, you're not going to be in the groupportrait. So test it when you have uploaded it.

I will collect all psd files in the next weeks and make one big group portrait out of it.

Have fun,
Jeroentje

yay, great going jeroentje. I'm on it, I have some time left so thats fine.

I was actually thinking more of a pass it along. Draw something, hand over the psd and the next person draws a bit and hands over the psd. until the whole picture is filled up with little details that everybody drew in.
But that could be fine for the next one. If this one turns out to work and people want more ofcourse. ;)

Right now this seems like a lot of fun.

Edit: Great stuff Goro, Drumwhore and Erikoinen!

:D Ok, the thing with the pants is still valid, but I decided to just try a "real" portrait for once. Why not!
Big one layered PSD for you (http://www.taron.de/Storage/Images/2d_sketches/Portrait_Taron.psd)

http://www.taron.de/Storage/Images/2d_sketches/Portrait_Taron.jpg

I think by now I believe to be a part of the 2d crowd as well...after I just today noticed that I did all of my sketches (49 by now) starting 8/18/2004 so it's not even a month yet! This may not be unusual for many of you guys here, but for me that's like the biggest load of images I can remember ever having done...(besides rendering animations..hehehe)...so thanx guys....boosts me back to life big time! :buttrock:

Hope its good enough to be in the same picture with all the others,
Here's the pic. Used Corel painter and Photoshop. I did most of the pic in painter and then put it into photoshop so it could be on a transperent layer.

Hey, can the pic be penciled? im not good at digital coloring and what not.. but if I could just scan it in into photoshop?? or how about a photomanipulated version of a picture of myself? :p

jeroentje
08-29-2004, 12:35 PM
Draw it. This was started in the daily sketching forum, so no photomanipulations, paintovers or traces. What you sketch with is up to you, so pencils is fine.

Geta-Ve
08-29-2004, 01:11 PM
you say, not paint overs? does that mean i cant paint over the pencil drawing? or i cant paint over a photo? (im assuming the latter?)

I'm sorry for informing you, Agilers, but your pic can't be used in the group portrait.

First of all, you should've had a transparent background, which you don't have in you PSD and the second of all, I think you can't crop the pic like that so there's some areas of the character that are not shown.

I think this should be plugged on the front page as maybe a "2D" entry requirement, and maybe the folks in the "3D" community could do the same thing,or do these entries apply to the whole cgtalk community?

I think this is a great idea and has the potential to go further,as in cgtalk, ballistic etc...could make up high res posters to sell to the community of portraits made by hand by the community themselve's or ourselve's,also, maybe not all of the members might take part as a deadline would be set as it is now, making the prints less cramped, but the other side of the coin is that nearly the whole community will participate and one hell of a poster would have to be printed to fit all those big head's into, which would make it one hell of a print to own..imagine it...having a poster containing most if not all of the cgtalk+networks community's portrait's of themselve's from whatever year, hanging pride of place on your wall.......?

just a thought.

Anyway, I love all the entries and think this will make a great poster when it is finished, and suup to jeroentje,Sir Patroclo and Supervlieg for such a great concept:thumbsup:

First off all what program must i use to make a psd....paintshop pro?
and second what was the deadline?

buzzz3d
09-07-2004, 01:57 PM
The deadline is in the page-title, september 17th.
PSD is Photoshop-format. I guess Adobe has a trial-version available on their website but I think you can also write a PSD-file from Paintshop Pro, I just don't know if PaintShop Pro supports transparency but that's also easy to check: just open 1 of the PSD's in this thread and you see it right away.

Jeroentje: dig your new avatar.

Hi, this is my first real attempt at a photoshop portrait. I must admit I sketched the outline on paper first then scanned and traced it. It's so hard to get smooth lines with a mouse. I also had a photo in front of me on my desk.

If you dont feel I am part of the community I wont be offended if you dont include it. I wanted to make it anyway, because I've been meaning to for a while.

I'm pretty happy how it turned out, allthough I couldnt figure out how to do the zipper, so some bits aren't as detailed as otheres. Not really too pleased with the mouth/teeth either.

Sorry its not from the waist up, I should read the instructions better, oh well, just stick me behind something. (if you do put me in).

anyway here it is:

I'm taller in reality, and there's no "_" in my nickname, though the psd file has, just to be sure no problems will come out... oh, and please put me on someone's shoulder, because otherwise... eh... you get the point :D

Hi Denman,

I can absolutely recommend Wacom tablets even if they are more expensive than others. Wacom has started to sell their new Intuos3 series so maybe you can get an "old" Intuos2 for a much lower price.

Hope this helps. Bye,

I decided to join in, the more we are the better it will be, I imagine, so this is me (i'm quite happy with this picture and I'm even thinking about modelling and animating this guy in 3D...)

http://gaitasfritas.250free.com/autoretend.JPG

I know that I shouldn't have done the legs, but I thought that it would take you just a second to erase them, and this way the drawing is complete and you have my legs in case you need them...

I think it looks very similar to me, except for ... the nose. Yes, I am a tall thin guy with a pair of bat-wings, and Yes, I can fly, but it's veeery tired to fly, you need a lot of effort, you know, so I just usually go walking to places.

I almost forgot... here is the PSD (http://gaitasfritas.250free.com/elmasfeo.PSD)

If I'm breaking any other rule, the psd doesn't work or something... please tell me

:bounce: I'm a new member, where I have to post my self-portrait?

Have fun,
Jeroentje

Wow, that are quite some entries last night and today.
Good idea to put it on the frontpage, thank you Kirt.

The psds I have collected are now all in one big PSD file on my HD (I have 43 layers now) and the portrait is growing every day. It's becoming awsome. By far the weirdest collection of nerd portraits I have seen in my life :D

One small note though: I had 2 or 3 files I simply can't use because they have a background. Can't remember wich one, because I have deleted them straight away.
Please read the rules in the first post very carefully before you post your work!
Your first entry is your final!

There is no need to reupload anything.
I have all PSD's posted before this exact message. So for as far as I care you can all remove the PSD's from your servers.

Except the one from kico21, that has an ugly watermark in it.
I'll hear from kico21 when he has uploaded one without that watermark.

Umm...shiii...I know this is a bit against policy, but I updated my portrait....I decided to get rid of my charicature, which was anyway not really correct for the guide-lines and instead decided tomake a "real" portrait....well....whatever...seems more appropriate I think and also fits the original request!

Here it goes... (http://www.cgtalk.com/showpost.php?p=1529491&postcount=6)

I´m next to Wildsheepchase, wohoo! It turned out great, I´ve found waldo! And the upside down portrait! and the hidden CGtalk Logo!

Teel us the numbers! How many layers? Psd file size? who´s layer 32? How many resets?

jeroentje
09-19-2004, 03:19 PM
@andrewley
Close one, yes. About a minute later and you would not have been in.

@Norante
Sorry you didn't make it buddy.

@Downwrdspiral
Better?

@Serial Killer
That's because I only had your first PSD with everything merged into 1 layer. You're in now.

@Pancreas
- How many layers?
88 including the background. And one layermask to put your hand on Wildsheep but Equinoxx is standing in front of it now ;)

- Psd file size?
59.4MB file size, 206.4MB Photoshop working size.

- Who´s layer 32?
-KDX-

- How many resets?
None, I use OsX

I started dragging all layers into 1 big file, naming the layers after the artist in it. And placing the mods in front and everyone in posting order around us (thanks for doing that Goro, didn't think of that when writing the guidelines).
After the frontpage plug it got a little crowded and I just kicked everyone on top of the background layer. Except for the mods, I wanted them all in front. It was a bit difficult to move stuff and to keep track of everything, because I had over 70 layers with my layer thumbnails set as large as possible to see what painting was in it. I simply don't know all of you by nickname ;)

I forgot 2 or 3 people. They're in now, except for the ones without PSD's.
I've updated the piece, this is the final version. If someone still feels left out, sorry for that. Take the biggest version and paste yourself over my own picture.

Thanks to everyone who participated for helping to make the world's largest community painting and for making this great project a succes.

Cheers,
Jeroen
