I'm starting to become frustrated with modeling. I'll pick a random tutorial from the internet on how to model something. I'll follow it to "T" but about halfway through, i can see it deviating from how it's being shown in the tutorial.

Some of the tutorials I've found, IMO, aren't written good. There is stuff left out, or they jump from one thing to the next, losing a newbie like me, etc.

Enough of my ranting. Are there any GOOD modeling tutorials out there? Thanks.

dun worry man...U will soon figure it out. Just check the possibility Modelling short-cut key or basic technique such as, add edge, add points, sub-division, bevelling edge, extrude or Revolting object. How to scale, rotate, translate an object. To modelling a good model really need lotta patience & testing without moaning. (Well, i was started to model again since last week.)

I was learned the softimage XSI basic technique 2 years ago. I tried to model simple objects once a while. The reason i do it "once a while" just the same situation like you. I dunno how to model it right. I dunno which part should modelling or which part should let the textures do the job. I cannot imagine How something is Form out from a "CUBE"... Normally people will modelling something from a box.

I wonder what is inside their brain? It is really cool...

Thx for the link..i downloaded the QT once it was here..
It is a nice tutorial video. But not for a newbie or beginner in modeling..

& it is diffrnt to XSI....But it shows us how to develop from box to boxes...Which is a good reference. But i had watch some more simple guidance cool tutorial than this. it is done for MAX user wif picture tutorial only. Too bad, the middle stage cannot be follow up anymore cuz it is using setting to control the modelling. A cgtalk member showed me that link.

sorry man, i live at Asia..impossible for me to attend class over ur side..hee

First off ask yourself how much of a good artist am I. If you can honestly say that you're a decent traditional artist you should honestly be able to mode anything you want. I've been modeling for about 2 years profesionally now. I'm going to give you the tools that you need in one sentece regardless of what package your're using. I use Maya.

You need the split polygon tool extrude face, move tool, rotate, scale tool. Honestly you can pretty much model anything you want with those tools, you qlso need undo.

Yes there are other tools that make your job easier, but until you have a good understanding of your basic tools and a good eye for detail you'll never be able to fallow along. Look take a simple thing such as a building and do anything that you can to get it done by any means neccesary.
For me the biggest obstacle coming from traditional art, (selt taught by the way) was thinking in 3D space. Good luck.

I've seen people with absolutely no traditional art prowess do some amazing things so don't let that get you down. In fact some of the most detailed mechanical models i've seen are from people with no traditional skill. I think the traditional part will serve you better during a final composition phase or organic modelling. But even organic modelling can be learned without traditional art.

EVERYTHING in life can be learned.

I'm starting to become frustrated with modeling. I'll pick a random tutorial from the internet on how to model something. I'll follow it to "T" but about halfway through, i can see it deviating from how it's being shown in the tutorial.I understand your frustration, I had that problem too sometimes. But is it really important to finish a tutorial? For me it isn't. Once I modeled a car and after a while I found out that the rest was nothing but repeating what I've learned earlier in that same tutorial, like moving and shaping groups of polygons. I'm the kinda guy who wants to know how something works, my practice comes with modeling stuff on my own.
When I get stuck, I move on, thinking that I at least learned something till the moment I got stuck. The fact that I did learn something was the most important factor for me, not whether I finsihed the tutorial regardless the immense frustrations.

i kinda agree wif Elysian. I only learnt the part in a tutorial which i interested to get wif it.
I won't start from scratch to model a complexity thing such as Car or even HUMAN. It will makes ur heart goin weak as soon u cannot solved out the problem by urself. Probably alot of self-taught 3D modellers is gather around here. Same as I, i got no ppl to ask to solve my pro. I cannot jst ask anything which it could seems very Trivial pro in a Forum. PPl will "hate" me for being so useless.

Well, do u guys check out a very Cool yet simple Tutorial -How to modelling an Elephant-"5 pages"-www.edharris.com) Even it is in Japanese Language.I really enjoy the moment of modelling wif it(I even giggle all the way..Dat's no bitter pain!!). I learned alot of incredible quick modelling technique thru that Japanese Tutorial. Well, i dun understand Japanese. Maybe It got good alot of Screenshots, .............I need more screenshots & details Properties setting like that. Cuz I am a totally "straightforward" modeller. Pls dun sell off ur very standard English which will confuse lotsa "low-standard" english educated person like me. More screenshots on Model, Properties setting, selected Command-That's ALL!! This will show us ALL than ur precious description.

Dat japanese Tutorial is my longtime research & a very first of my happy moment in modelling! I hope u guys(Beginner) will start wif dat one too. Let's said my first COMPLETE model is an Elephant..haha

open your mouth, say AAA. there ya go. ( spoon feeds for a while ) feel better?

these tutorials on the net are there to give you pointers... ideas. i dont think they are meant so you can copy step by step of exactly what the other person did.

Haaa...the sausage elephant tutorial is so damn cute.. I wish i got mood to do dat too!! THx for the sausage elephant...A good to share "modelling technique", indeed!

Ambient,
Of cuz, we cannot just blindly follow the tutorial in a net. But, it is more important that we can know alternate method to model something that u ever think of...Dat;s y i agree on, Learn "That Part" rather than spent all ur hard-time from head to tail. It is truly makes a beginner frustated.

If u haven't check out the above tutorial, i personally found sometimes it is Quick to model something thru Many Polygon(CUBE)- Freeze it> Merge it>Bridge Polygon... Ahhh..u got an Elephant body!.. I learn Bridge Polygon in this tutorial.. Always start from a cube will it be kinda slow??

p/s: The Modelling dog based on rotoscope picture seems not bad too.. But too many steps will scared u out of from trying it. But all this steps is How a 3D modeller supposed to do...

You need the split polygon tool extrude face, move tool, rotate, scale tool. Honestly you can pretty much model anything you want with those tools, you qlso need undo.
I totally agree with this too.

When I was starting out, and even now if it's a new program, the first thing I always like to model is a basic house. The kind you draw when on paper when you're a little kid, with a big pointy roof, windows and a big rectangular door. Nothing fancy like window sills etc, just the basics. You can do everything with the tools mentioned above. I usually don't try organic stuff until I'm more aquainted with the program and tools.

but generally it's good to start with little things. Finish them (which gives you confidence), then try something else.

An extra thing which I have also done (not just help for modellers) whenever I have started to learn a new program is to go through pressing each and every button on the keyboard at least twice (in succession). This is so I can see what shortcuts there are happening straight away, even if I have no idea what they do at first. . Many keys may actually do things that are useful even when you're new to a program or aspect of cg, eg swiching between the scale, move and rotate device (often next to one another).
The only annoying effect of this experiment for me has been when it undocks or brings replaces windows/ viewports with other things. But hopefully you have a 'Revert to start User Interface or something similar.

I also agree with Elysian. You shouldn't worry too much about not finishing tutorials exactly, well written or otherwise. Making mistakes and fixing them yourself is good tuition. Especially what he said here:

the rest was nothing but repeating what I've learned earlier in that same tutorial, like moving and shaping groups of polygons. I'm the kinda guy who wants to know how something works, my practice comes with modeling stuff on my own.
Do your own stuff. Experiment, which is part why I do the afore-mentioned process of pressing all the keys on the keyboard. I still do that when I forget things.

I'll pick a random tutorial from the internet on how to model something.
Also a very good thing to do.
