aragorn 08-22-2004, 04:40 PM when i nwant to move scale or rotate i notice there are no manipulator handles. (i am normally a maya) most highend 3d apps have manipulator handles, does wings have them?

nope, no widgits in Wings... just set up some hoykeys for these transition ops and your off and running... :)
I use F1 for move>normal, F2 m>x, F3 m>y, F4 mz
F5 Extrude>region>normal, alt/F5 extrude>normal, f6 ex>x etc etc...
F9 scale>uniform, F10 scale>x etc etc...
- rotate>x, = rotate>y, \ rotate>z
I mean you can set up the keys and combo's to best suit you and how you wish to interact...
and then yahoo... quick modeling at your fingertips :D

There are 3 internet "arguments" in the CG world that seem to come to a head once or twice a year...
App "A" vs. App "B"
PC vs. Mac
Widgets in Wings3D.
Let's just say that Lucifer will be sportin' snow shoes before Wings gets a manipulator widget. :)

some apps let you turn manipulator widgets on and off. This is particularly important if the app is an "all-around" app. you can tweak-model at high-speed with the widgets off, then turn them back on for more "high-level" object manipulation and animation tasks.
however, since Wings3D is a dedicated modeller with an emphasis on point manipulation, i don't personally miss manipulator widgets much when i use it.

<< did not know i was going to get flamed for that >>
My apologies if that's what you thought I was doing - it IS a topic that's come up before (even tho' there's no real reason for you to know this) - I put the reference to the previous thread there, as such things often provide useful info to those looking for / used to widgets about how to improve / modify a wings based one (without widgets) etc.

I have come to the conclusion that you have to put 3 smileys in any question answering a posted question or it is considered a flame. Also the words;

What i like to do when im transforming i hit either x,y, or z in orthographic so i can move free in 2 axis instead of 3. And have my hotkeys also if i want to be sure i only move in 1 axis. but most of the time just switch my views with the hotkeys.

personaly, I kinda think that working in Wings3D, without widgits, is easier than working with widgits, so long as you have hotkeys setup for translation ops along axis, , simply because, once you have keyed the translation op to be, then you don't have to hold your mouse button down when dragging...
same same for cam rotating... click and let go, move the mouse... so easy on the tendons :D
in fact, it is so cool that you can key in the op, move things a bit, click middle mouse button to dolly the cam a bit, left click and still be in op traslation for adjusting that last move... really cuts down on the cross screen mouse/cursor travel factor eh...
and holy yahoo on Smart highlighting for selection eh... more time saved, and I mean the spacebar is pretty easy to hit to deselect and invoke smarthighlighting ready for all modes eh... infact my thumb is permantly sitting over the good ole spacebar for quick deselect...
aragorn... don't feel bad man... we welcome any and all who wish to find out more, and further explore the usage of Wings3d... you really have to understand that many of the more experienced Wings users here have answered this sort of questioning over and over and over again, pretty much each time a new user to Wings3d pops up :D
Don't worry, be happy... I am sure that once you haved done some modeling within Wings3D, that you will soon employ more and more hotkey useage, and will look back at these early days and have a good laugh... :D
