View Full Version : Cyberpunkstyle game elements
midnight 08-21-2004, 08:42 PM Since I stopped school this summer i have continued working on the product of my examproject, which has been a study in computergameconcept developing plus 3dmodels for my own gameconcept. As the headline states its a cyberpunkstyle game and I did a character for my exam, since then I did a building for the same game and I am now working on a car as a supplement to the other models. My plan is to continue expanding the collection and at the same time building my portfolio from it.
Im actually posting to get feedback for the car, but Im posting the previous models just for you to get an idea of what Im doing :)
(This is thread is gonna be a little picture heavy and I think my webhost is a little slow, so please be patient)

This guy is one of the players characters, a member of a gang fighting other gangs in a futuristic city. I modelled him after this concept by Jojo made for a Halflife2mod called Corporationsmod (http://www.corporationsmod.com)

The model consists of several smaller models so its possible to do different gangmembers from a general modelbase, changing their equipment and so on.

After my exam I began doing this building, I wanted it to look halfabandoned and withered by age.

Following the same idea as the character above the building consists of several parts that can be put together in different variation.

This car is modelled from the shape of an Audi a3 but Im doing some adjustments to make it fit into this dark future. I have expanded the plating around the rear wheels to protect the tires from gunfire and the front wheels i gave a protecting plate on the outside. I have been experimenting a little with plating on the frontwheels like on the rear ones, but its getting a mess if the car has to be able to turn :D Any ideas?

Overall, everything looks good.
One problem with the character is the proportions, but that's minor. Nice and clean looking.
(..He's got some super washboard abs there btw.)
The building looks quite good.
But I dont really like the Pizza sign for some reason.... maybe if it could be an ad for... i dont know, something else.
The car is looking good as well. Very low-poly. In the shaded view though, you need to smooth the seams out.
However I should point out that I dont get any cyberpunk feel from this so far. Not from the character, building, or car.... but maybe that will be more obvious when you put it all together.

i agree. it looks very cool, but not necessarily 'cyberpunk'.
you do need to work on the shirtless torso. it's too blocky & the texture looks like he's wearing a t-shirt with some sort of muscle print, you know? lol
and though i don't really mind the pizza add, the colors distract you too much from everything else. you have a nice dull color scheme for everything else but then these bright pink letters & what not up on top. it is a corporate thing though right? if you do go with what joe_bloggs suggestion, might i recommend making it something to do with one of those corporations? also it seems like it's on a poly plane, that's why you see it on the reverse side too. i'd recommend duplicating the plane & pushing the original just a hair further outward. then take that new one that's in the original spot & texture it so it looks like the back of a billboard, you know?
keep it up though

Thanks for the reply guys :)
You got some nice points that Im gonna remember for my next work, but right now Im considering the character and the building done. I have been working on them for a long time, so I really want to move on to the next thing :)
The character is my first "finished" one so I really got something to learn :) I think the problem lies in the texture as ill_logic points out. Next time i better try to get the details to sort of wrap around the torso and not be on the front and back of him.
ill_logic, youre right the billboard is just a polyplane, i thought that it would be too expensive to make a box out of it. But your method sounds nice, Im definately gonna remember that one!
I think making the area lowlit will help alot on the atmosphere, the bright backgrounds for the pictures might ruin the textures a little? Apart from changing the billboard ad to something else, what would help attaining the cyberpunk feel?

Great work!
I try to make things reuseable like that as well, been mainly a modder so things like that make it alot easier to change things up. Wish more games had changeable parts, sof2 had some easy bolt on stuff that was awsome to use heh.
Keep it up, and if you work on a retail game try to add that interchangeable aspect to stuff too.

True, customization really adds depth and character to games, its really nice to be able to individualize your playermodel. I think thats why games like NFS: Underground has become so popular :)
And btw, Im not a professional even though i hope to become one! But those words really warmed :)
