I did mention that the challenge forums stays here, the challenge site will serve as a hub for this forum...

and I believe I even mentioned that the voting WILL commence once the new challenge site is up...

Please guys and others READ THE STICKY THREADS it contains all the info you'll need for most things...

ok , not sure if this is the right place to post it , but..
I havn;t tried a challenge yet and I was reading through the rules for bump maps.
So any natural texture can be bumped?
Like the grain on ceramic ? or natural wood grain?
What about general natural damage? Nicks scrapes?
Is that out?
Just asking, thanks for any clearity.
Yell at me if I posted in the wrong place or I'm i'm just dumb
haha....:scream:

As Gabe said, is the vehicle the main bulk of the entry for this challenge? Is it okay to spend more time working on our little pilots... ;)

I suppose that if you're going to spend a couple of weeks on a character then you'd better spend a couple more on his contraption...

I only ask because I look forward more to doing the character than the contraption.

Oh, and nice idea! :D

And for anyone who hasn't seen it already - I recommend getting your hands on a Copy of Laputa - Castle in the Sky from Studio Ghibli's collection, if not because it'll be a great source of inspiration - it's also a fantastic film! :D

lildragon
08-05-2002, 07:28 PM
Either or, you can model what you wish, but primary focus this month is on the vehicle, if you choose to model both that's fine, but keep in mind the genre... pilots, mechanics e.t.c use every ounce of imagination...

jtk77: yes that's fine, anything that's not practical to model, as was stated...

Damn, the corpse of the july challenge isn't even cold yet :D

Great theme tho! Makes me wish I could enter..but if I can, I will later..not going to get roped into another unfinished one just yet..but oh the ideas! :) I definitely think it would be cool to have a 'character side' to it, ie the pilots get as much attention.

Laputa is definitely a fantastic source of inspiration..also Porco Rosso! I wish a non-bootleg official set of Ghibli would hurry up and get released. And of course Frezzato comes to mind, but then when doesn't he? :)

Anyway, good luck everyone, will enjoy watching from the sidelines, and I'm sure I'll get sucked in sooner or later.

It's called a challenge for a reason ;) and use your imagination, there's endless amount of materials you can find in one's habitat, be it a modern house or a troll's cave

I'm asuming we can use scape parts that might be lying around that are not intended for an air vehicale?
We don't have to stay TOTALLY organic in nature ,eh?
Thus the post sci-fi "mad max esk" theme mentioned in the write up?

I won't see why not .
I mean , using parts and stuff left over from a junk pile should be cool.
AS long as it was put together , home made like...
I would guess anyway, thats what i got out of the setup/.:airguitar

hypercube
08-05-2002, 10:24 PM
That's kind of my understanding of it..I mean, you don't 'make' tape or gum either..I'm thinking junkyard-wars type contraptions would be great..but then that's just me :D

Wiro
08-05-2002, 11:21 PM
Alright, it seems like some people are already getting their trousers all twisted because of the mention "homemade" ...use your imagination. If we made it too easy for you, we'd all end up with F-16s with some fancy doodads to make it look sci fi :)

Imagine you had a fantasy; you've always wanted to fly! You don't have the money or resources to get an F16. So you make your own airplane out of the materials you have. Now imagine you are an orc. Or ET trying to get back to earth. Or Buzz Lightyear stuck on a junk planet. Or McGyver. It's really not that hard. Just don't try to make a fancy clean airplane. There's enough room for that in the WIP gallery. We're promoting originality here!

What's important is that the result should NOT look like it came out of a factory. It should NOT like like the person who made it spent the past 3 decades being a pro at making these vehicles. It should look put together in a spontanous way. As if the creator had a dream one night about wanting to fly. Or escaping a prison. Or being tired of eating chicken from his backyard and wanting to hunt airwhales (ya know, Episode 2) from the air instead! The possiblilties are limitless if you just take some time to think about it.

Hehe, booyah Lil!

I just wanted to add something; concerning the characters. We thought that we should let the non-character modelers have their fun again. This doesn't mean the character modelers are left out. You'll only have to be able to build the contraption more around the character...like a pilot wearing a jetpack, piloting a para-ski or propeller powered parachute. If you want to emphasize the character then make sure you make one helluva cool contraption around him :P

jeroentje : i am not sure if anyone replied to your question about the wording of up to 4 passengers, but it means 4 or less. i just thought i would clear that up for you.

anyway, i had a question about one of the rules... it doesn't really apply to me, but just for clarification:

6) A character (pilot, mechanic or spectator) is optional. The emphasis is on the vehicle. The character can be made as part of the contraption though (as wearing a jetpack)

8) The character should show one of the following emotions, proud, angry, frustrated

according to rule 6, we do not have to have a character, so is rule 8 taken into consideration only if we include a pilot? i would assume so, but the wording is still a little unclear. thanks for the help! i hope to finally participate in a challenge here! :bounce:

Hmm, just noticed this brought up but hadn't noticed it in the rules before..why no alien characters? As stated that's very broad, but it's also very limiting..why couldn't an alien inventor do the same sort of thing? I could understand if it was some alien that had giant wings or was made of gas bags, but I dunno. What's an Orc considered then? Is it just anything non-terrestrial? There are some cool entries using insects, mice, etc. where's that put them?

Anyway just curious..trying to bust through work to be able to enter, but if it boils down to just what kind of human scale items a guy's plane, balloon, or helicopter is built out of, all the good stuff will be done by then. Call me unimaginative, but that seemed a little stifling.

erilaz
08-07-2002, 01:02 PM
I think it's more that "alien" means the contraption could be made out of ANYTHING then, even stuff that doesn't look homemade because it can be argued that it's ALIEN home made.

And the fact that the rules don't want a bunch of spaceships!:D

hypercube
08-07-2002, 01:06 PM
Yeah that part makes sense.."well hey, on his planet, battle cruisers grow on trees". I'm just hoping that anything from this earth is game.. :)

lildragon
08-07-2002, 01:09 PM
erilaz: exactly ;)

and cube yes "non-terrestrial" can you imagine the chaos, when peeps are arguing over a non-terrestrial type object, saying it's "homemade" I don't need the stress :argh:

Think of things that can exist of this world, Dinos, giants even trolls, elves (think middle earth here) just folk tales even, these are things we're very familiar with...

Don't limit your imagination to spaceships, the industry hates them heheh.

Question:
"Remember that this is a WIP challenge, so it is a requirementto show the steps you used, maps e.t.c , e.t.c and help out as much as you can, of course you're not obligated to, but it will help those that need it greatly."

Does this mean we have to have a challenge thread, or just a record of what the process was?

iC4
08-07-2002, 10:11 PM
if you don't have a challenge thread the challenge get's useless.......you can't win anything, it's just for fun and to get critics and comments from other people

Kula
08-08-2002, 02:29 PM
This may seem an obvious question, but does it have to be in the actual "act of flying" ? Or can it be parked on the ground, with lets say, props around it and people in the process of assembling it? I didn't see a rule saying it must be flying so can we take liberties here?

Wiro
08-08-2002, 02:46 PM
0-4 people, including (but not restricted to) cats, cows, kangooroos and ducks. Mice, rats and flees are not considered sizeable enough to take up space. Raccoons are though as well as badgers or any duckbilled mammals.
Chicken and pheasants in cages are considered cargo and can be added. The abovementioned duck as well if in a cage.

I think it's ok to have the vehicle parked as well as long as it's recognised as being a flying vehicle even if it's still being assembled.

Hope that clears it up a bit :)

So the idea of a 'Junk yard wars' thing is ok. eg. Taking a John Deer and kiting it out to fly. I understand it has to look home built, but some of the vehicles made on that show look pretty impressive. So basically, can we put together a piecemeal contraption made up of factory made "parts" but do not come constructed as a whole?
Also what are the rules for the 2d challenge on using 3d renders composited into the image? eg. backgrounds, pyrotechnics etc.
Thx for the info.

umm that's a bit elaborate, don't worry yourself over making a full fledge scene, that's not what we're after, concentrate at the task at hand, then when that's done you can go wild on the scene when the challenge is over...
