View Full Version : 3dsmax 64 bit Support?
bport 08-21-2004, 01:34 AM This is a simpe question that relates to the future of 3dsmax in general. Since Windows 64 will come out in the next year or so, has anyone heard of 3dsmax 8 being written to be x86-64 native? This would help out anyone who is getting used to and tired of seeing the "Out of memory" Error message since we all know that you can't really have 3dsmax using more than 1.5 - 1.7 GB or RAM. I would love to be able to use a full 4GB of RAM for any scene but for now, it just ain't gonna happen.
On a side note, does anyone know how to "cheat" or trick 3dsmax to being to use more than 1.5 GB of RAM for a scene? I doubt it. But any hints would be appreciated immensly.
Thankyou for your time in reading this fellow 3dsmax users.

The strongest memory demands are during the render process, so i think you have to look whether your renderengine is able to use some stuff you are looking for.
But i dont REAL sure, about it.

I dont know how to trick max to do something like that, but to go back to your first question, i was asking a discreet studio max dev about a 64 bit support for their products and he was telling me they were ready and just waiting for the windows world to accept 64. Of course i take it as a general answer to placate me into waiting for their applications to be full 64 bit, but we never know. Maybe he was speaking the truth when telling me this. We'll see next year as the release 8 rumors are going to leak away from Discreet's headquarters!
(or not. But for now, it's still 32.)

Bport,
if you are using XP Pro, there's a 3GB switch you can set to utilise more memory.

Very cool. It's nice to see answers to my questions. I gues for the most part the answer is no, for now. I am sure we will hear more about 64-bit support for 3dsmax in the future as, Discreet will surely have to take this step to coutner Maya's 64 bit initiative. I can hardly wait for the day when they do. It will be so exciting to have an all 64 bit environment letting us, the 3dsmax user base take the full advantage of using more than 2GB. Yes I am a aware of the 3GB "switch" now, and am glad for your response regarding it.
I hope we hear more feedback in the future.

Do you know how to do this? (regarding the possibility to use 3Gb with WinXPpro)

/3gb as an option in your boot ini. I had serious problems with the "/3gb switch" as it is called and my nvidia drivers. I think... it could have been a billion other things, but just read up on it 'google' before doing anything.

Vlado the creator of Vray, said (if i understood him correctly) that porting to 64 was not complicated, what he needed were the new Net 64bit compilers and then he would convert into a 64bit program.
Myself I would have serious problems to afford buying for example 10GB of ram. I really hope we see more affordable ram in the future.

I think that 3dsmax will be ported for sure with in a year or 2 at the most. 3dsmax is already equal to Maya after they threw in Mental Ray and now include character studios at no extra charge as of a few weeks ago. The only thing that holds it back now is 64 bit.
RAM is definately expensive. No question there. But as Windows 64 becomes more common place, and people start havinf 1GB included in a basic system (3 years from now) I am certain it won't cost too much for people to rig their machine with a sweet 4 GB. Especially for us serious 3dsmax users that like to really show off what we can do.
Again thanks for all the positive input you guys!

i think what discreet should be aiming at is porting 3d max to linux, like Alias and Softimage have done,
it is already a 64 bit compatable, all they would need to do is recompile it to that architecture and port it to linux.
i would love to be able to use max on linux, i would then have no more reason to use windows if they did that...
i dont know if alias has made a 64 bit maya for linux yet though, i dont use maya so i'm not sure, i just know that the technology is already there in the linux community.. it has been there for a while...

You need to be very careful with the /3GB switch. Not all drivers are tested in this execution environment, in addition to this by forcing the kernel into 1GB you reduce the size of various kernel buffers.
For more information have a look at this:

>4GB of RAM is not just useful during render time, it lets you keep the various applications that contribute to your pipeline open.

bport>=1GB of RAM is going to become common in new machines in less than 3 years. Take a look at the hardware specs Microsoft and various hardware partners are talking about for Longhorn.
