View Full Version : Newbie photoshop doodle
Plonka 08-05-2002, 02:48 PM I dont think i have an artistic bone in my body but i borrowed a wacam artpad off a friend and within the fist few minutes after installing it i drew this doodle(took em all of 2 mins), which supprised me as i think it almost looks like a person :)
Got me thinking that maybe if i keep trying i could
maybey produce something that could actually be called art.
What u think? hope for me or not?

It is not that bad.
And there is allways hope for everyone.
Keep practicing. It is fun. Every professional artist sees just as much mistakes in his /her work as you do in yours. That never changes. But the quality will change if you just keep on going.
Have fun.

Yeh its a lot of fun, i was just messing with the smudge tool a bit so heres an update.
The smudge tool can be very helpful. I strongly recommend using it very modestly, however, or your work will soon become a boring, lifeless mass.

Yes Roel, basically you are right.
But if you check out the July entrie from I believe his name was "Stacker" or "Slacker" or something like that when tey're back, (sorry S, but the challenge threads are down at the moment... ;) ) then will you see it can look bloody awsome. So it all depends on what you do with a tool...

I'll certainly try to remember that until the challenges are back. But did this S*acker guy use the smudge tool in Photoshop, or a different program? I have found the one in Photoshop to be a bit sluggish and unresponsive compared to the ones in Painter (unfortunately, I suck with Painter).

I use photoshop myself and your right about the smudge tool, but its only really when ur using a large brush that it start erm.. lagging is the only way i can discribe it, and since i was only doodleing my image is only like 1024*768 so i dont need to use a big brush :)
I think im done with this image tho, i'm defo gonna keep trying tho, see if i get any better.
I just thought id mention this is the first time iv tried doing 2d stuff, i'v only really done 3d up to now but i find its hard to create anything original in 3d unless u have some basic drawing skills in the first place so u can draw up concepts but iv found i totally suck at hand drawing.

You're sooo right! How could anyone expect to know what the h*** they're doing without some kind of reference and knowledge of how image creation works?
IMHO: basic/good drawing skills = better 3d
And Plonka: no you definetly don't suck at hand drawing! If you'd sucked, then neither of us would have seen that cute little face. But if you don't feel confident enough about it, take some drwaing classes (if time permits) to pump up what you already have! I think you'll find that it'll be well worth it!

Thanks for the confidence boost :)
Your spot on tho with what u said about the need for basic drawing skills. I use lightwave, i know a lot about the program, i know all the techniques and with good reference material i can do pritty good stuff, but thats the problem, by using other ppl's work as references the finnished 3d work isn't really my own.
And iv started so many 3d projects with ideas floating around in my head but then not got anywhere cos i could'nt get the ideas down on paper first.
So i try to sketch things on paper but i get disheartened when it doesn't look right strait away, so i was supprised when i start playing with this drawing tablet that i could actually put something together that looks how i wanted it to, im definately more suited to hand drawing in photoshop rather then pencil and paper.
But im gonna practice, alot :) both on paper and using this artpad because im having a lot of fun with it.
Thanks again :)

Hi again, i just thought i post al ittle update of my learning experience :)
At the mo im just doing more doodles in seperate layers in the same photoshop image file so i can compare new ones with old ones(the colour splodge to the left are my flesh tones, i find it easier to pick colours form there).
I was just hoping to get some comments on my shading and stuff really, i know im terrible at doing lips so thats what im working on now. Im concentrating on small areas of the face like eye's, mouth, nose rather then trying to draw a whole face as i find that a bit hard :)
Do u think im improving?

You're doing fine.
I suggest that you do try to draw a whole face. I think that you are drawing as if you were modelling; piece by piece (sorry if I'm wrong).
But you should look at a face as a whole. Not as a collection of loose ingredients, because it isn't. This is exactly why 2D might improve your 3D skills. Try fastly drawing a lot of faces in different positions and with different expressions without detailing. Might be a good exercise.
Cheers, jeroentje
