"Nintendo has been granted a US patent that yields it the ownership of key online multi-player gaming facilities, including player league tables, voice communications and online gaming host services.
The patent, number 6,769,989, was granted on 3 August this year, but is essentially a continuation of another Nintendo patent, 6,599,194, which was filed in April 1999.

The two patents detail a "home video game system with hard disk drive and Internet access capability", but the second filing adds provision for "substantially real-time" online multi-player gaming, connection via an online gaming service, support for online "player performance data", using the connection to download information and do so securely through an authentication process, and the communication across the Net of "audio input signals".

All of these components are well-established elements of modern online gaming, and have been available for PCs for some time. Nintendo's patents focus on "home game video systems", so it's more of an issue for rival console vendors than PC gamers. The PC world might provide the basis for a prior art claim, but it would arguably be negated by Nintendo's specific console-oriented implementation of the broader concepts.

Patents can be modified to add new elements, and technology companies frequently amend existing intellectual property (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/07/11/apple_attempts_to_patent_fast/) with new, related ideas - which then apply from the first filing date, in this case April 1999, long before last year's introduction (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/08/08/microsoft_unveils_live_web/) by Microsoft of Xbox Live, its console-oriented online gaming and information service, and which also offers voice chat cilities."

For a Patent, wouldn't they have to specify a certain computer design, etc and not just the idea of "voice chat facilities"?

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/08/17/news_6105085.html

However, all those theories are wrong. After acquiring a scan of the actual patent documents (pictured), GameSpot has learned the August 3, 2004, filing was merely for a supplementary patent to the 64DD, the online peripheral for the N64 console. The patent #6,769,989 was originally filed in April 1999, eight months before the 64DD's lackluster release. Shunned by consumers, it was discontinued, and its online support was shut down in March 2001. Nintendo reps contacted by GameSpot confirmed the patent was indeed for the 64DD and not for a new console.

so they updated a patent on the 64DD. lots of companies keep old patents up-to-date and this may be nothing. OR it could be the second coming of the 64DD as a new component for the Gamecube. who knows. personally, if Resident Evil 4 and the new Zelda aren't enough to keep your GC plugged in, then go take your temperature, or play some Super Monkey Ball!!!

For a Patent, wouldn't they have to specify a certain computer design, etc and not just the idea of "voice chat facilities"? Well, you can always go to the patent itself and check out their claims:

Well, I would, but I'm not smart enough.

Yeah not the most action packed news day is it.

Well, I would, but I'm not smart enough. I wouldn't say it is a matter of smarts. Personally, I'm just too damn lazy to read through that whole patent file... :D

But I am sure there are specifics in there. There would have to be.

Cman, I think it also depends on the type of patent that is being filed, full utility or business process. There is more than one type out there.

Oh sweet, a disc drive for the Gamecube!

What the heck would they use it for? Nintendo has shown very little interest in online gaming on the Gamecube.

Unless they are changing their mind due to the overwhelming popularity of games like SOCOM and Xbox Live. They can't ignore THAT.

It would give me something to plug into all of those ports on the bottom of the 'Cube- and a MMORPG Zelda would be a guaranteed hit....:)

well, considering how old the patent is, and depending on the langage used, it could be used as backing for a major lawsuit against sony, microsoft, or both.

well, considering how old the patent is, and depending on the langage used, it could be used as backing for a major lawsuit against sony, microsoft, or both.I think Atari had peer to peer gaming on their consoles a long time before Nintendo. Tele-Games I think it was called, though it was via telephone, not internet.

So I guess it would depend on the wording, like you said.

EDIT- It appears what I was thinking of was a prototype. Called "GameLine".

shouldn't they actually have a system that has those things available to patent them......doesn't that mean they basically patented the X-Box??

haha... yes, looks like they patented the xbox. Sounds like they're taking a page out of the M$ playbook. "Patent their tech and sue them!"

Hey, anyone who files lawsuits against M$ is alright in my book :p

Nintendo also patented interesting converstation. According to this patent that they filed in 1997 and has now been revised, if you have conversation with another human being, child, adult, male, or female, and that conversation could be deemed by the president of the Nintendo Corporation, then they can sue you. In fact, if you are enjoying this reading right here, it is illegal.

This is crap. How can you patent something so general like "voice communication". It doesn't claim rights to any technology such as ,codecs, or file formats that can be considered proprietary. How can you patent the "voice". This is disgusting.

Oh, I've got another one. "Nintendo has been granted a US patent that yields it the ownership of key paper back book facilities, including chapters, tables of contents, indecies, appendicies, and page numbers.

This is basically what they have done!

they're talking about voice communication over the internet. So a microphone and speakers.

I skimmed over the patent and didn't find anything about voice communication... You sure it's there, or are people just jumping on Nintendo based on hearsay?

 Right on. Don't forget Metriod Prime 2.

Though I love my GameCube, it would be nice to have more on-line games.
