Great start!
Nice poly flow and the head looks pretty good for the poly count.
Definately increase the subdivision on the legs, and in particular around the joints like the knees.

very nice work
the arms seem to be a bit too thick
Thx for crits, i had changed.
Now modelisation is almost finished, but i ve to modify several things before and to optimise it.
This one have 1846 polys.

All critics are welcome, i need yours. Particulary for the body belt (it s modelised). I m a bit anxious about how it will react when i ll add the biped. Do you have advices about how i can build it ? Or just a texture ?
AndyH

Very nice!
Really tidy mesh and good shape.
I know what you mean about the belt - i can imagine it intersecting with the body and stretching badly when you bend the spine. Not sure what to suggest. I dont think it will look quite as good if you do it as a texture.
Yes, but when there is a torsion (for exemple when he looks behind), torso is rotating horizontaly. As the 2 belts haven t edges at the same "places" that torso, i think belts will disapeared sometimes (because covered). And i don t know how to place belts' edges.
Mmh hard to explain.

Looks great!
Really want to see this movie. I heard it's his best work taking 10 years of his life to make (Otomo)... and that it tops Akira. Is that true in your opinion?
I don t know if we can say if it s better or not than Akira.
For me visual is very very amazing and very high quality, but story is, mmh, classic. Nice but classic.
In globality i can say that i had been more impressed by Akira (but i was young when i had seen it), and i m falling in love about Steamboy's designs .
A professional animation japanese teacher had said me : "Animation is great, story is not great".
---
But i prefer that people add critics to the model :) . If you want i can open a topic to discuss about the movie.
I had done quick tests to see reactions about the torso belts and Biped. I had merged in center the 2 belts and add an horizontal edge, moved few vertex. There are few problems sometimes but it s cause i didn t turned several edges.
It s seems okay for quick tests, just some modifications when i ll add Biped.

No, I guess it couldn't be better than Akira... :)
Two things:
- I think the you should spread the loops at the knees out a bit.
- His fingers look too stubby. Maybe stretch them out a bit and articulate them more.
(and... wouldnt you get better file size and color if you used jpeg instead of gif?)
Thanks joe. :)
Could you do a quick drawing about "- I think the you should spread the loops at the knees out a bit."
I don t understand.
It s right for fingers, done.
I can t store many pics on my personal HP, therefore as i needn t showing colors i reduced as light as possible.

Sure, i can do a drawing :)
just space them out a bit like this:

that's looking real nice so far!! i'm loving the clean mesh can't wait to see it texutred!
Hi,
it will be finish soon, but i ve a question about Ink and paint.
I would use opacity for few polys, but with Ink n paint i don t find how.
I had tried to use a different chanel for polys, but when i add opacity, colors are too dark (probably cause it s not in the I'n P chanel and there are influenced but lights).
http://bertrandpoulain.free.fr/Steamboy/a.jpg The texture in the I'n P chanel.
http://bertrandpoulain.free.fr/Steamboy/b.jpg The texture in a different chanel.
Have you got an idea that how i can do ? If you need more informations ask me please.

Egh... sorry
The etna model was my first try at using ink & paint, and cos it has no transparency, i had no reason to learn how to apply a transparency map
There is an option in the Basic material extensions section called 'opaque alpha'. I presume that might have something to do with it? MAybe you have to use embedded alpha channels for the opacity?
Sorry i cant help - maybe try the max specific technical forum.
I don t know what i did, but now it's ok
I had finished texturing and skinning. I ll probably add few modifications later on maps.

Animation tests and posing arrive soon.
EDIT>eeeurps, i had forgotten to skin hands and to texture soles.
Joe> for knees' lines, in fact i do that cause when there are folded, more polys are spaced more we ll see them. My english is so porr sorry, perhaps you ll understand with my draw (http://bertrandpoulain.free.fr/Steamboy/cu.gif).

No bad comments from me

 I like it ! good modeling and mapping (even if it's quite simple)
Are you gonna make any (cyclic) animation ?
Keep the good work !
lots of style, great influence, i love the result.

WoW, i realy like the model. so nice :)
keep going dude.
but i want to ask you, isnt the detail in the head/face too much, rather than the body ?
i mean, the body looks so low poly, and face hight poly.
just asking

Looks awesome, excellent adaptation of the 2D version. Can't wait to see some animations.

Pretty dope, wasn't expecting that one, nice work with the toon shader
Thanks all for your comments.
It s done, next step will be a running animation cycle.
http://bertrandpoulain.free.fr/Steamboy/test.jpg
Jamaludin> are you talking about that (http://bertrandpoulain.free.fr/Steamboy/r03.jpg)?
pimeto> that s right that there aren t many polys on body, cause they needn t more. I prefer to add them for facial animations.
I had done a running cycle, but i don t know why, there is a latence in the video. With a JPEG sequence it s ok...
Somebody has an idea why ?
Steamboy without (http://bertrandpoulain.free.fr/Steamboy/uu.mov) textures (348ko)
Steamboy with (http://bertrandpoulain.free.fr/Steamboy/steanime02.mov) the render (1.09mo)
That's finished. :)

I really like this character nicely done! I need to see this movie.
I like how you added extra toonshading detail to the texture for the extra shading detail. It helps in making the character look more detailed then he already is.
About the run cycle, if you are referring to the slight pause in the end of the animation, then that's because the beginning and end frame are the same. So when it loops it looks like he pauses for a moment.

Yeah excellent style. Great rendering as well. Looks drawn by hand. Great job dude.
About the running animation. It looks like you need to delete the last frame. Looks like it is the same as the first one, which makes a strange hiccup at the loop.
Either that or quicktime doesnt loop that well. Gotta give you some stars, because I really like it :)
Thank you all. Why i didn t thought about the last frame...
It s ok now, i had changed the textured version.
I know that the animation has several problems, but i m not good at it, just for fun.

Looks brilliant - really clean and crisp.
Nice animation too - are you gonna do more animation? or was that just to test it?
Youve got the celshading spot on - what are you using? max ink & paint?
Hi
I ll do probably another animations, but i ven t time.
I wanted to do morphs, but i ven t time.
I want to live, but i ven t time.
:)
For me the skining is nice, it was a pleasure to animate it. Therefore i ll do another animations but i don t know why. Now i m on an other project.
Yes i used Ink'n paint. I knowed that there were other cartoons' plugs but i wanted to do everything in Max. For me the Max I'nP is nice, i m playing with it and sometime (sometime) there are interesting tests.
For exemple I had done a test for a black and white outline, and even if i had done it quickly, i think that i ll can have interesting tests. It s just for outline nee, i know that face is bad :D

I want to live, but i havent time.Hehehehe!
That outline test is pretty good - it doesnt look celshaded at all.
Ink & paint is the best celshader ive used - you can do some real nice things with it.
Keep it up, and remember - Live!
P.s - have you got any more work i can see? your site doesnt seem to actually have any Cg on it!

Yeah that outline render is really good, like sketch and all.
btw, i rated this thread, and the stars wont show.. whats up with that. does it need more people rating it?
