Hello all. The animation project I worked last winter is now public.

The animation was a part of my project studying the design in entertainment (in contradiction to real life industrial design).
It was done in 3DS Max 3 and 4 (all rendering in 4 if I remember correct). Composition in After Effects - most of the shots with multiple elements were compositions to keep the control high and render times down.
Most of the modeling is sibdivision, but some surfacetools models too. (the yellow flying car was modeled in Rhinoceros).
All rendering was done (as mentioned) in native max renderer.

As it is a solo project the work amount was quite enough. The thin storyline doesn't really come through and some shots certainly could be worked on - but the main emphasis was to create believable product entities and environments + to show them a little in action and in correct contexts.

Feel free to comment anything.

I will try to to update my webpage soon with some "behind the scenes" and sketches.

and the link finally (21 Mb divX 4.12):
ftp://ftp.asmparty.net/pub/asm/anim/Project_Kerosene_by_Anttila_Kolarovic.avi
the address was fixed

Also comment if the file is coming very slowly.

Coming down reasonably quick, but you need to change your link, it should be:

ftp://ftp.asmparty.net/pub/asm/anim/Project_Kerosene_by_Anttila_Kolarovic.avi

You had it as http, it wouldn't allow it..

Just wanted to give a heads up, I'll comment after watching :)

edit -- (ok, watched)

Cool! Very very nice..really like the look+feel of it as a whole, the outdoor stuff and utopia especially, great airy look. I agree some stuff could be worked on, timing and editing in some places is a little floaty too..not sure how specific you want comments anyway, since it's done.

But great production designs and contrast, details, good camera angles..really nice piece overall.

the rendering's nicely done, but the 'trailer' seems little more than a fancy turntable for your models. It's never really hinted at what the city's "dark past" is, tho I'm guessing it has something to do with war?

Anyways there's some nice models, but I'd think about going back and putting in more than one person. For example in the shot with your guy loosing off a few rounds from his weapon, how about acually seeing who he's shooting at, or maybe who he's punching in the final shot?

it's cool, the ship attack sequence look's nice, but maybe there is to much DOF it give the impression of miniature sometime.
great work.:applause:

Wow , really nice!
As said before, the rendering is quite good , i agree on the fact that it looks like miniatures, but i actually dig that ! The first thing i though of when seeing the city was " Logans Run" .
Only negative thing is the lack of "people crowding the streets" and people other than the main character.
*Edit* : after watching it a few more times , i realised that , even though your buildings and vehicules are nicely detailed themselves, the environments feel too simple and somewhat empty : for example that kind of giant transport vehicule thingy : on the platforms where some guards are walking, or in the hall beside the ready to be launched flying vehicules ..
It would also look better if u'd raise the arms of the guy punching at the end, so it would punch right at the camera, might dramatise the situation a bit more ...
well ,Great work anyway !

yep. fancy turntable says it well. I know it could be made more solid with couple of new shots filling the narrative feeling. But as mentioned this was as priority a design work (it was companied by a 120 page book). Also I don't want to go back fixing things. I prefer much more creating something new for a change. Thanks for comments - valid points anyway.

Yes the dof is bit strong in some parts. Especially the first city scene squeezes my heart every time I see it (not happy with it at all). The dof in that one is to hide "not so great" mountains

Yes on could keep on adding detail but it easily becomes a problem. I was rendering all with single machine and already now the modeling was too heavy on many objects. I know it isn't star wars quality but it really wasn't the aim either.

Maybe next project could be something with bit less subjects but taken further.

thanks for all comments,

for me...it looks great!
i also try to make some little animations...dealing with cars....but i never get such good result!
i think the physic's are very good shown!
(mean the battle flight carrier - thing and the flying things!...looks much realistic!)
and i like the renderings...sometimes it's very dof.y (mean dof is too strong as others mentions befor)
but i think I HAVE TO WORK A LOT TO GET SUCH RESULTS
but thank you for this great motivation!

@kerosene : sorry if i sounded a litlle harsh, in fact i was really impressed ( to say the least) by your anim, it's way beyond anything i'll ever do, and it's quite motivating ..i like the design and feel of your character ( with that "seventies" look to him :)
I was only nitpicking (?) when pointing out a litlle lack of detail :-)
Keep up the good job !
Ciao !

I like this a lot. The mood, atmosphere, models, camera and lighting is really eyecandy.. not much storytelling, but as you say, it was also not the point.. From the terms you have been given I think that this is a really nice piece!!

Thanks again for all comments

ckaos@om-

No worries. You were not too hars at all. I hope I wasn't whining myself.

cowcowfish-
yes it is from skecth to animation by me. I did it more than a year on and off (also working on other things during that time). Very educational and very frustrating. If you want to make a project to practice different skills, choose more limited subject theme and you'll end up animating more and enjoying more.

The lighting in some of those shots were beautiful. A tut on something like that would be great. Most people can only do that with a G.I. renderer.

OH MY GOD, THAT IS WICKED. Has fully inspired me to go make an entire environment.

Only crit is at the start the city does look like a miniture model.

Loved the ships taking off at night and the cross hair targeting bit... Man very very cool:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

thanks again for nice words

And yes I have posted preview and 0.9 version sometimes in highend and some other place.
hope I didn't brake any etiquette with my post hellrender.

and s***w you Frank - full movie???? there will be no movie.
:shame:

seriously I don't want to keep banging my head to wall by doing things alone. I am working on new short thingie with less elements and will do that unless i get a great job before that.

Awesome!!
I could just gaze upon those cool designs forever! I loved the huge vertical tank. And the lighting...wonderful!

To me the animations and cameramoves were the only things that were a bit weak. The camera was very nice but tended to be very slow and always kept on orbiting around objects. A bit turntablish like someone else mentioned but overall not really that bad either, just a bit repetetive.

The character animation could have needed some more attention though. The guy shown after "one man is chosen" looks quite stiff and there isn't really anticipation or "power" in the guy that shoots nor in the one that punches. I liked the design on those soldiers though.

If you intend to use this as a demoreel it's some kickass work. I'd just cut out the characters and the writings and simply present it as a showoff of your excellent modelling and lighting skills instead of passing it off as a trailer.

VERY good...

only crits:

the opening shot looks like the city is about 1 meter square and 1 foot tall.

and the punch at the end of the trailer doesn't have the effect that hollywood trailers achieve with a technique like that.
