View Full Version : modeling a realistic human back

ok.. this is so incredibly annoying, i'm modeling this character. he's fully clothed and all that nice stuff.. but as a feature of the character, he has a large tattoo on his back..

so i was oging to model his back.. now.. i can cough out a photorealist head in a day and a half. the front of the torso is easy enough, and the arms depending on amount of detain is not all that difficult

BUT THE BACK!:twisted: AAHH>> i can't believe it...

even payed $65 for the human anatomy for artist(really great book, highly recommended for any artist studying the human body.. )

but the images f the back are not large enough, and don't cover the whole back in any particular pose, and if u've pay'd close attention to a back, it changes depending on the place of the arm

(infact, if i just modeld the arm down.. probably wouldn't be all the difficlut.. lotsa images of that position....)


anyway, i need someone with very good knowledge of the anatomy to either find, explain.. or better yet draw the human back w/ the basic forms.. anothe rbig probalem is i'm trying to do a realistic back so images like http://www.fineart.sk/man2_template.jpg
are not too help full

i did spend a bit too much time on one back.. but i refuse to post it. if you saw you'd understand why..

a big problem was just going between images.. including hogarth and photos of real ppl(which just doesn't work at all)

so if anyone can help i would be very very greatful

Can you post your back anyway? Cause it seems like you've mentioned most available resources already.

The only help I can really offer is to buy Dynamic Anatomy by Hogarth. That book really helps you visualise the muscle structures.

well, as it turned out, i basically just needed to take my time, modeling out each muscle, and being more carefull about studying and understanding the muscles in the back

thanx for the responces i got, and sry didn't reply sooner..

have you tried www.3d.sk (http://www.3d.sk) ? i know you have to pay, i don't know 10 or 13 bucks but i'll tell you this much when you want a reference or texture maps it's well worth the price. check it out you might be surprised. trust me 10 bucks is a lot ( cause it is nowadays) but for some peace of mind $10 is nothing.

It's been 3 months and I still haven't looked at my model's back. I'm hoping it wires itself just by fudging with all the other wires near it.

get some good references from either taking pictures of your own back, or a friends back.. or.... get a mens health magazine. they usually will have some workouts descriptions and pictures.
import your model to zbrush and draw the back. then just retopologize only the back area in silo and merge that into your model back in max ( or whatever you use for modelling )


whoops. heh didnt notice the date on that one. stupid revival threads. i guess this wouldnt work back in 2002 since those tools werent available back then. but they are now!, so it should be that much easier to do now :D

Well... I was right. By saving the back for last. It pretty much wired itself. I did have to do some tweaking though on the small of her back.
