I've been using lightwave for the past 2 years or so but have become annoyed with all the limitations and work arounds required to get anything out of it when it comes to mechanical modelling. Lack of edges mainly, but that's besides the point. My question is, is it worth it to pick up an app like rhino to just do mechanical stuff in? Is it easier to do this stuff in Rhino and export it or am i just opening a whole other can of worms with NURBS? It seems to me that doing things like planes in nurbs would be easier than subD. I was thinking maybe doing the base model in rhino then exporting to another package for detailing and surfacing?
I've tried the rhino demo once or twice but never got far with it as I was always frustrated about placing bitmap backgrounds as modelling guides. Anyone have any input or experience they could share on this?
I was also thinking maybe Max's surface tools would be a easier technique to use with things like planes, but i've never been crazy about max's limitations, mainly it's performance. I'm not aware of any other software that has anything like surface tools?
