Just saw this at the list , hopefully this answers the question about foundation updates:

"Well I just got called from Softimage / btw: this is SUPPORT! / and this is
how it look like, to make it CLEAR for everyone:

1) For Foundation 4 there will be free updates: that fix bugs but don't add
functionality. For example there will be free updates like 4.01 and so on,
but not 4.5

2) There will be no Foundation 4.5. Softimage XSI Foundation will be
released every major release, for example 5.0, 6.0 and so on. 4.5, 5.5 will
not be released.

3) Update from Foundation to Essential or Advanced is possible, but only
form the same version to the same version with the discount. ( this is how
it goes:

ESS price = normal Price - FND price
ADV price = Normal adv price - FND price

But this works only when you update from Found 4.0 to ESS 4.0 and Found 4.0
to ADV 4.0.

Sounds reasonable.

That's what I was hoping for!

Fair enough !

Nice that some bugfixes will be included - the only thing I was worrying about. (i.e. do I need to buy a maintenance contract for $$$ to get bugfixes...)

With regards to upgrade - I think the Foundation version is so good that it is not immediately restrictive to your creativity - and that's a good "feature" in itself

that's fantastic news. Despite the drastic price cut, it seems like they're treating Foundation like any other software. Bug fixes/minor updates for free, with an upgrade path for the next major release. I really appreciate it that they're not taking some sort of, "You got a great deal, now shut up. You're on your own!" type of position.

bravo, Avid!

speaking of bugs (or lack thereof), has anyone besides me noticed the remarkable stability of XSI Foundation?

I guess I'm just so used to other 3D packages crashing all the time, but with XSI, it seems that I can just work away, even with all sorts of whack animation and rendering features enabled.

Oh, and I'm noticing that displacement mapping seems to be surprisingly efficient. With other apps, it seems to take FOREVER to render. MR rocks.
