View Full Version : Inside of the mouth modeling question

Hello everyone. I am finally making progress with my character model that I like. I have made some teeth for her based off of a diagram of a cat's teeth. But the problem I am having now is making her gums and her tounge. Can anyone give me some advice for how do model those two things, or give me a link to a tutorial? Also how can I post unrendered images on here of my work, like you guys do? I'm sure it'd be more helpful to post a picture of my model, but the only way I know how is to render it and save the rendered image.:shrug:

look at http://maxrovat.sns.hu/subdiv/ under the gif section there are some nice gifs. one showing you to model the inner moth.
an other tutorial for this maybe Martin Krols demaon video Tutorial, more than just a moth but a look worth. dont now where to find semms the links on his site are broken.

Thanks Theht for replying. I have seen that gif before, and it's not very helpful. I dont know how to model w/ subdivision surfaces. I dont start school until next month so everything I have been doing in 3d is a result of my own teachings. I use polygon modeling, as I find it the easiest to understand. Also I am on dail up, so any videos that I'd have to watch over the internet would take all day to load.:cry:
Anyway, I used the polygon head tutorial from TheHobbitGuy to make the actual inside area of the mouth. As I said before, I have made some teeth based off of a cats teeth. Right now I just have a pink nurbs cylinder that follows the contours of the inside of the bottom jaw. I just put the teeth on top of the cylinder and thus my makeshift gums. :hmm:
I was thinking of converting that nurbs cylinder into a polygon cylinder and using the split polygon tool to create more verticies. Then I'd just move the verticies around the teeth to make the gums look more gum-like. I dont know if that would work though. :shrug:
As far as the tounge, I am still lost. I made a nurbs sphere and flattened it, but it just looked ugly and out of place inside my character's mouth.
Lastly could someone please tell me how to save images of my work such as wireframe and smoothshaded unrendered images so I can post them here? I'm sure it'd be much more helpful if you guys could see what I am talking about. :banghead:

for showing us a wirefram use the print key on your eyboard an paste the image into any 2dgraphic app like photshop or even paint will work.

Um....what exactly do I do after hitting print screen on my keyboard? I used to know how to do this, but I've forgotten >_<

look at the image i have attached
i used a simpel cube and extrude it a few times then i insert the polygon where a teeth should be and exturde it inside use mesh soomth to get more detail or cut the mesh so long you think it looks rigth. My exampel is very basic but it should show you how you can make it and with a littel bit of work you can make it look much better than mine.
and for the thound i would use also a cube tessalat it a few thimes and arrange the vertics untli it looks like i want. and with some cuts you get more and more detail in your mesh.

Thanks Theht! I started on the top row of teeth yesterday. I dont like how the teeth are alligned. It seems weird to see the tooth thats supposed to be behind the incisor when u look at it from the front. I looked in the mirror and noticed it was the same for my teeth, so maybe its right after all. :shrug:
I dont know how to tesselate a cube... :cry: I'm in Maya, so if anyone knows how to do that in Maya please let me know. After I finish putting the teeth in, I'll convert the gums to a polygon and I'll try to shape them like the picture you put up, Theht. Then I'll combine them with the inside of the mouth. After that, I'll work on the tounge. I'll keep you all posted with upgates of my work.
