What you see here is a very quick (about 30 minutes) experiment in technique for part of my "Project: Fairytale" effort.

This angel doubles as a supporting role and narrator (thought not in the conventional sense of narration) for an animated short I'm doing as a gift for my wife. I love the character so much he shows up in other stories I write as well.

Technically, this piece was the result of a 5 minutes pencil sketch, a 10 minute quick shade with a black watercolor pencil, a quick spritz of ink, about 10 minutes of sumi brush to move around the splatters and wet the watercolor pencil, and finally 5 minutes of reinforced line with an ink pen.

My hope is to develop a fast style that properly conveys the mood of the film for the storyboarding process. I don't know who is going to be joining me as the project develops but I want to make sure that all the artwork conveys the proper emotion to any artists who do join up, but equally important is speed.

I'm one guy with no financial backing trying to pull off a 15 minute feature... speed is of the essence, but I will not sacrifice quality.

Guess it sucked. So I redid it:

Looks to me like your nailing your objectives: mood and speed; style's cool too. Nice angel design.

Thanks alot. I'm much happier with the second version (as I should be right?). It's got more "movement". The pose is better (more in line with the character). The setting being more representational (with the tall grass) helps me visualize how this scene is going to look storyboarded. And the wings just look more attached and powerful. The first set looked like they were glued on with wax or something ala Icarus.

hey that is really cool, i like it. it resembles a manga style imo, and yeah the second pic has far more life to it, with the grass and the small spots of ink all over the page it makes me think of mid summer when the dandylions are maturing and being blown into the wind. Great job! I am working on some storyboarding right now as well and at about 3 hours a pic, it is taking sooo long, actually at that speed i find i tend to lose the feeling of the scene after a while.... anyhow great stuff, would love to see more.

Thank you thank you. I actually started a companion piece last night: the daemon adverssary of the Angel. It's still drying or else I'd show it to you.

I like the dandylions interpretation, and can definately see that now. Actually, I'm a compulsive splatterer, a lot of times I'll add splats and scratches for the sake of themselves. This piece actually is the Angel's first onscreen appearance in the featuree he's a concept for... and that sequence occurrs during a torrential downpour... so I guess it could also be rain.
