View Full Version : movie player for animation reference
william_jeffers 08-19-2004, 02:38 PM Hello everyone. Often when i am animating i like to use video clips shot from my camera or taken from anywhere i can find. I normally view these clips using the Quicktime player mainly because i like the fact you can easy scrub through a clip and it the fact it tells you the time code all the way down to frames. However quicktime does have some draw backs. For example when working with Max i am unable to work on a scene while having quicktime sitting on top (in windows terms) as reference. this means i am currently resizing my Max so i can fit both on screen at once (but this wastes a large amount of valuable screen real estate).
I was wondering if anyone else has any suggestions for my problem. Perhaps someone has scripted a way of intergrating quicktime in to a Max window (which might be possible as i understand max 6 has an integrated web browser).
or perhaps there is an even better movie player for animators. a few features i would like to see are: the timecode in the same window as the player (rather than in quicktimes rather large extra box), the ability to play clips backwards and the finally to be able to mirror a clip and play it (a trick from traditional animation to see you work afresh).
Also an integrated movie player in max would be great for comparing your animation previews and test renders with what you have in a scene.
Anyways better get back to it....
hope you all have some good suggestions.

Rendering->RAM Player. Opens MOV files as well...

unfortunately, RAM player does not play sound, as many tut videos include narration, this makes it a poor choice*
i know what you are looking for, though. i was forced to use windows media player- turned the preferences to "allways on top in skin mode" then picked a very low profile skin. "windows classic" i believe. has the scrub controlls- albiet not as good as quicktime, but passable.
*i love ram player. not only is it a wonderful player, it works as a high speed file converter. i wish it had a stand-alone mode!

I think I may have found what you may be looking for. Unfortunetly it does not show the frame of the animation or video. Probably does but I havent figured it out yet. The good thing is that there is an option in the preferences to check called " always on top" which is located in the video section.
The download link is http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
Video lan pretty much plays anything. Try that and let us know what u think.

Thanks very much everyone. Although I liked all you ideas, an intense search of the general discusion forum lead me to what i was really looking for - Quicktime PRO - this has an always on top option as well as a few other tasty features (now all i have to do is get my boss to buy it). thanks for your help.
Also my search showed a program i had never heard of called FrameCycler by iridas. it looks awesome (although out of my price range) has anyone ever used it and what are there thoughts?
Finally does anyone know how to change the view preview option from opening the preview in media player (the default) to opening it in Quicktime? this would be really appreciated.
Thanks again guys.

virtual dub is great, you can cache a dvd and scrub through it in real time. Class software. and I do believe its freeware, or shareware. Or I might have the wrong name....hmmmm

quicktime PRO fulfills most of my purposes, but the one thing i cant figure out how to do with it is get max to automaticly open up the preview in quicktime. annoying having to load it up. does anyone know how to do this?

go to http://members.optushome.com.au/ghra/scripts.htm
and download "rampreview". create a button from that script in max. it should load your last standard preview in ramplayer.
To view quicktime files in go to File>View image file - a selected mov file will load in quicktime player. I donīt have max here, but look into the maxscript reference - there is an example how to integrate windows media player in a maxviewport.
also a nice tool for comparing two clips at the same time, but only works with aviīs.

I haven't used it, but Bobo's ScrubbyDoo might fit the bill.

It apparently uses whatever you have in your env bkg slot, so it supports any file format that Max supports. Also in theory you could flip the movie just by changing its UTile to -1 in the Material Editor.
