It may well be my crappy modelling but i seem to get artifacts and mesh "tears" at corners when using NGons and hypernurbs, are the two tricky to get to live together ?

This is one of hos thng tha il deintel becom a RTFM when the manuals come out, but since there isn't any documentation can't really blame you for not knowing.

When the R8 came out, cinema had 2 HN objects instead of one. The newer one, which most people use, has extrra features for weighting, and UV subdivisions. THe older one called HN (R7) doesn't have these new option, but has less evere polygcounts per subdivision, and with R9, it supports NGONS, while the R8 HN object doesn't yet support ngons, mainly because of the time it would take to have the other features support ngons as well. Dunno if the final version will have this, or if it will be a 9.1 kind of thing, but if you have ngons, stick to the R7 HN object. In my personal opinion, even in R8, you should try and stick to the R7 HN because it allows you to have less more incriments of subdisions so you don't necessarily go overboard.

Hey, he has to maintain his rep - 'El Typo' is a nickname that comes with a certain responsibility ;)

OK i will try again this time keeping the model simple to begin with, using both types HN's and NGONS and try and see at which point the artifacts show up

As i said it may well be my bad modelling skills as i was just extruding away to see how NGONS performed, so i may have made some basic errors in the mesh which i overlooked

Well, Kai is right about the different types of HN objects, but I think the answer to your question is that you don't want to have any/many ngons in a SDS model--no matter which application you're using. Internally and at render time ngons are subdivided into quads and triangles, and of course triangles are generally (with exceptions) a no-no for subdivision surfaces.

I've watched Kai's typos closely as a lurker and think a study is in order. 'A little too quick on the spacebar between words' just doesn't describe the creativity involved in some of his better work. I believe he's actually speaking in tongues; he's in touch with a higher power, and he's just holding it back because he's in denial of the awesome power he really wields. But as I said, a study would be the only way to confirm it.

actually my typing is going to probably be worse then usual till my own computer is setup. the current one I am using is soooooo slow that when I type a paragraph I sit around and wait till it shows what I typed, and it doesn't even recognize all the clicks :/

My apologies.

As for ngons, in a Character you generally want to avoid having them in the final mesh, but doesn't mean it is't annoyingwhile your modeling inside an HN object and perform a cut and see tears in your mesh all of a sudden..

as well ngons, and subdividing them, can be very handy for inorganic modeling, or modeling for still images. Man if I was modeling a human face, in pose, for a still image, i wouldn't care about any ngons showing up, as long as it looks the way I want it to look.

IMO, R9's N-gons behave just like any other app's when they're subdivided. You've just gotta learn what happens, smoothing wise, with all the different types of poles and intersections.

Kai, it was good to meet you at siggraph! I thought your spelling was directly proportionate to being worn out from siggraph. I made one particularly, erm, incoherent post after getting home from that Blur party...

thanks brent it was nice to meet you too. I have to say everyone shoudl be greatful I didn't post while I was doing siggraph (I wanted to but never had time or access) I'm sure what I would have posted would have been ten times worse.

Kai!

Thanks for taking the time to chat with me and hang at the booth.

You gave great demos and really took time to geek out with people who were wanting to know why C4D is a great app. I hope you got some free green milk out of the gig. :argh:

Hope to see you next year...and oh yeah...if I mail you a copy of your book, can you sign it for me? :applause:

Cheers!!!!
