Intelligent floor tiles that allow a person to walk through a virtual environment while remaining in one spot have been developed by Japanese researchers.

Hiroyuki Fukushima and colleagues from the University of Tsukuba, in Ibaraki, and ATR Media Information Research Labs, in Kyoto, came up with the smart tile system, dubbed CirculaFloor.

The system can be connected to a virtual reality headset to let a person move through a computer-generated world while remaining in the same space.

Theres a link on that page showing the tiles in action. They'e a bit slow and noisy but it's a great concept! Apparently this was at Siggraph, did anyone see it?

Man this is freaky I was just thinking about this exact idea earlier for some reason and here I see a link on it. It's creeping me out a bit.

he was demonstrating them at emerging technologies at SIGGRAPH this year, they were a bit rough, couldn't walk at more than a snails pace, and it needed tons of huge camera equipment to get the squares in the right place, if it could be perfected, that would be cool, but this isn't really the way to go in my opinion, we need something more virtual, not practical w/virtual, but, gotta start somewhere.

this is actually a better article than the one I posted a link to. this one has VIDEO. mmmm... I can't wait until this is practical technology. instead of renting a bigger apartment, I'll just rent a closet and get one of these babies. hehe.

Man, if this can be applyed to first person shooters as well as adding a VR head set it would rock... however not for those people who are really good at it now and out of shape. lol.

But for everyone else, it would open up a new dimension of play.

I got to walk around on these at this Siggraph... pretty cool little things.

They did move very slow though, but in the future, these could be VERY sweet.
