View Full Version : skinning tuts online?

i know this may have been asked before, but I haven't found anything that specifically addresses my question, so here it is:

could anyone give me a link to some good tuts online for skinning?

I'm getting ready to start skinning my character and I don't have much reference to get it done. It seems that 2 things on the net are rarely addressed as far as tuts go: bone setup and skinning. And the manual doesn't always help since all it does is tell me what every little button does and leaves me to figure out how to use that for myself. I don't learn very quickly that way...

If anyone could lead me to a link or even a book that is clear enough for a beginner in the matter to follow, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks for your help! :D

head over to highend3d.com, or check out the skinning tutorial in Instant Maya.

There's not a lot about skinning really,
One thing i'd suggest is looking at using a low res mesh as a wrap deformer. Search Maya's online manual about this. (F1 key?)
Try searching the forum for topics on skinning, i know there's a few about.
Skinning is not the easiest thing in the world so good luck and be patient.

CitizenVertex: I usually go to highend3d (although not as much lately) but I must have completely forgotten about that extensive tutorial on skinning! Thanks a lot! :wavey:

sedric: Uhm, either you misunderstood me and thought I meant texturing when I actually said skinning, or you know something I couldn't figure out... I actually read a post by svenip somewhere a while ago where he said that UV mapping is important for skinning... don't really see how that could be, but maybe you're going along the same lines as him? Even if you just misunderstood me, thanks a lot. That tutorial will be _very_ helpful for my texturing work I need to start on soon.

ReD_MeRkIn: thanks for your suggestions I think they will be very helpful. I have a bad habit of not looking in Maya's helpfiles... I've never been too crazy about Alias|Wavefront's tutorials... I hated the Learning Maya book series for example. hehe.

Anyway, thanks a lot you guys, this has been very helpful. :bounce:

I am going through the same skinning issues myself, when i get it sorted out i'd be happy to pass on what i learned.

actually the skinning tutorial is great for people who want to learn about low poly modeling (games?)
It's pretty good at explaining the basics of building a character.

What gamers call skinning is different to what 3d artists call skinning.

Has a great tutorial on setup that cover just enough skinning. I'd like to have the time to write a tutorial myself but im afraid work wont allow it.
