Hi guys, Roberto here.
I just wanted to say thanks to all that made the first FXWARS a success.

I would like to thank HowardM and Kirt for their kind words of support. And Also I would like to thank Beaker for his patience while we held the contest in his stomping grounds.
All the entries were great but it is obvious that two entries went ahead of the pack.

So lets show the winners!

Software - Lightwave 8. Comped in After Effects

Render Time - The final is comped and took a day and a half of different renders and editing. The flying one took about 4 hours and was done in 2 sections - The trebuchet and the tower and comped together.

Project Time - Whenever possible for 4 weeks. The first week was spent figuring out if LW's dynamics were up to the task.

Well I'm done, I won't have any more time to do anything on it, there are 3 files avaliable, a crappy encoded one that is about 12.51mb, and a nice shiney one (thats the one you should get) thats about 46.23mb. There is also the required simple side view with all the bells and whistles turned off (6.5mb).

About the entry.
There are no keyframes on any of the objects, except a camera which are stepped keyframes.
There are a few expressions to drive the birds, the arm of the catapult (to ensure it evaluates corretly, which is more of a debugging command), one on the walls of the castle to get them to react to gravity.
Particles are cloud type, software rendered, 2 particle emitters, shaded using particle cloud, with ramp opactiyPP and radiusPP.
900 frames long.
Envsky for the sky texture.
Pin and hinge constraints used only.

I have learnt a fair amount in this little project, I've started to flex the dependancy graph in maya in a way that it shouldn't be used, and have got a couple of new tricks up my sleeve, as well as a new found confidence in trying out new stuff. I'm not a texture artist or a lighter but dynamically its pretty sound. Hope you like it as much as I enjoyed making it.

If anyone could help me host them I would be very very appricative.

To me it seemed like "Mr. Grau" didn't have too much inspiration, his tribuchet was more like a copy of Derby-Q's. Just look at the post dates... It needs to be told that in a way the toy trebuchet was quite hilarious. Good job, guys!

Everything about this entry is solid. The simulation of the impact is more realistic than the other entrants, who seem to either nuke their targets or barely touch them. Cory's had all of the right bits and pieces where they needed to be, in a magnitude equal to the cause of impact.

Granted it's not as visually good as Derby's, in terms of eyecandy, but the end of that one (Derby's), the impact and results, just detract from the whole.

My $0.02... no change required. ;)

Good job on all entrants though! Fantasic work!

I think Cory hit the physics best (especially wall impact), but Derby went the extra mile in putting the dudes in and creating the whole atmosphere. Nice work everyone. I did like that nerf one that knocks down the blocks. Heh.

Cory, might I ask...what did you use in LW for the rope dynamics? How they bounce around? That is pretty awesome!

I think it is a shame that Derby-Q posted his work so fast, there's a lot of copycats, even the WIP renders are the same of his in some threads... well...
Cory's camera motion is bothering me, and if towers back then shattered like his, there might not be one brick on top of another anywhere, nice tower though. Also, I like the setup of Derby-Q's treb better.

Even though I liked the extra touch of the men and stuff in the D.Q. Salano entry;
In my opinion the physics of the exercise was more important and Cory C. really did great on the impact of the projectile hitting the castle. Nice low angle too.
Makes me want to try some hard/soft body effects with my copy of LW8.
Great work everyone!

Best Simulation: Derby-Q Salano

Derby-Q seems to have the best dynamic simulation of the ones I could view. I like the way this weapon of destruction launches and the extra little bits of eye-candy included. I felt the two shots of the ball in flight were not needed and the second hit at the top of the tower made this one a bit confusing to view (where'd that second projectile come from?). Good hits on the tower though.

However, I'm going to go with best animation and overall for CoreyC. The camera angles and impact are much more impressive over Derby-Q's entry. The animation is well displayed in carefully selected camera angles and there are no other distractions from the task of launching the projectile at the target. Simplicity scores when it's well presented. Only critique I have is that the impact seems to force too much debri to the outside of the tower. More of the material (as it seems more logical to me) would be projected into the tower with an impact such as this. Still, it looks cool and believable in most regards.

To Roberto - This was a very cool challenge. Honestly, I don't see where you find the time to run all of these things on CGTalk, plus keep us all up to date on the latest CGNews. You are one dedicated and relentless individual. I nominate you for CGTalker of the year! Keep up the good work! :buttrock:

i really enjoyed the pure simplisity of this movie, i thought the dynamics looked espesially good where the wall first tips just slightly and then falls to rubble completly. the design was clean and best of all comprehensive. i think if this was a competition of quality per MB of movie this would definatly come out on top. good job.

I really like CoryC's Wall-hit-sequence more, but overall Derby-Q is my favourite :)
What^s counting for me too is the detail-love derby-q has shown in his thread and his work, also GREAT THX for the pfd-tutorial.

EDIT:
the toy-trebuchet is also very very cool. so, is there a way to give this guy a most-creative-conversion-Award? :D

:buttrock:I agree on this:

As for CoryC, I like the camera shot, but when it hits the castle; it's as if nothing is simulated at all. The ball dissappears into the bricks, and they blow out in the opposite direction. I understand how this kind of procedural simulation can't really happen in Lightwave (no physical rotation based on collision), but still.

I am a stickler for procedural stuff, and I think that Derby's animation also violates the rules as I wanted to interpret them, as the characters are keyed, etc..

I feel like these guys should have had to submit their scene files.

Great contest though.

As for CoryC, I like the camera shot, but when it hits the castle; it's as if nothing is simulated at all.Everything is simulated with LW dynamics. Also read back through the rules. Only the dynamics of the weapon and the brick wall had to be simulated. Keying was perfectly allowed in Debry's keying of the men. In the real world a Trebuchet shot to a castle could not break through the wall at all but since part of the contest was to break a wall, that is what I did. Yes it is on the Hollywood side but it is still all dynamically calculated. I took great care, as I am sure Derby did as well, to not break the rules as we know them. Please don't insinuate otherwise.

Please don't insinuate otherwise.I'm not insinuating that you broke any rules, I am making a statement. I said that the bricks exploding were not a simulation of an impact of the ball hitting the wall. Sure, you can procedurally tell the wall to randomly explode when the ball gets within n units of it, but this is a simulation of a wall exploding, and not a ball hitting a wall. I merely said that the ball passes cleanly through the wall and all the bricks, therefore not simulating any collision; moreover that Lightwave's month old rigid body system isn't even capable of the physics that would make that possible. You can be defensive, but I didn't say you didn't animate the entire thing procedurally. I actually think you did a great job, as someone who used LW for 6 years, when it comes down to it, using Lightwave professionally becomes figuring out a way to fake the real effect you want (which is usually a feature another program has: flawlessly).

Also, I said 'the rules as I wanted to interpret them' in case you missed that part. I know you can add whatever keyed animation you want. I guess I was just wishing for a nice houdini entry :)

I have to give special mention to Derby-Q Salano, for how fast it took him to finish his simulation, however, he got lost into far from secondary stuff, and forgot about the tower destruction. Could have been Number One for me.

Very nice of you ORberto to put up that challenge!

Take Care guys!

"moreover that Lightwave's month old rigid body system isn't even capable of the physics that would make that possible"

This is a VERY incorrect statement.

I think CoryC responded clearly and respectfully to your opinion of his work. Other peaces added dust coming off there wall other had two balls hit there wall. I don't think opinions of these peaces is a bad things but Iíd tread lightly on whats sounds like discrediting there work or interpritation of the rules. It is also probable better suited to the threads of the peace itself for this is a thread for voting primarily.

I don't want my post to continue this tread in the wrong direction so if you dissagree with my opinion please feel free to msg me privatly.

Having pointed a number of engineering friends to these videos (they were impressed!) one noted that adding wheels to the trebuchet (in real life) added to the range. Apparently, allowing the device to translate, which moves the cg (in this case, "center of gravity") makes the real world device more efficient.

I'd be curious if any of the simulations are up to the task of an experiment-- can you permit the trebuchet to translate, and see if the system reflects that observation? I suspect a lot of new data has to be added; by setting the trebuchet as fixed, you don't need weight and so on. . .

still, its a great experiment at the intersection of the two CGs

I most like the secondary movement - the ropes, and the trebuchet spending the last of its energy and momentum swing back and forth ever so slightly. This secondary motion adds so much life to it. Very nice.

I didn't want to crowd up this thread during voting so I'll answer the questions asked now.

Orkman - The rope dynamics were a low-res polychain with clothFX and a hi-res version MetaLinked. All the bouncing is generated in the simulation.

Madcow_0 - There is no way a trebuchet could have done that kind of damage in real life. I tested some more realistic versions but they weren't all that exciting and since the rules didn't specify a realistic simulation I went with a more hollywood look. Also, the challenge did include destroying a wall.

Kirt - Same as above.

Akima - My Trebuchet did not have the complexity of Derby's (which was awesome!) but most of them didn't. Mine was modeled almost exactly after one built in a town called Visby, which I believe is in Norway.

Crocodilian - I read that wheels improved range too when researching. I thought I would have a hard enough time pulling off a stationary version let alone one with wheels.

Derby - Yours was awesome, especially as fast as you put it together. If you had the full month to work on this, I doubt anyone would have stood a chance.

Thanks to everyone that voted for anyone.
