Hi guy :)

This is my last wip, Z4. I use Rhino for modeling (and I will use Maya/MR for shaders/rendering).

are you using splines or something in Rhino?

can you show me a mini tutorial for getting those little circle indententions on the back of the car?

Dias
08-17-2004, 07:35 PM
Rhino is Nurbs software (imho, the best nurbs software).

It's very easy to add many details (but so easy to make initial generic shape).

As far as that circles concerned, you have to project circle shape on the surface and that trim it. :)

Thats really great great stuff, Tell me some thing about rhino, is it really that easy ......???

great going, keep us update :)

Dias

Easy? Not really. Of course as far as nurbs surfaces conserned it is easier than Maya Nurbs because this one has a lot of problem that need to be fixed.

Anyway, nurbs are not so intuitive as poly like. You need to study a little before make something good. As I said before, for example, it's very fast to add some small details, but not so easy to make initial surface. Another example, to make surfaces smooth you have to use Fillet, and it is not so easy, I haven't understant very well how it works (not yet). :\

I know, I have to post some wire screens, I'll do it as soon as possibile (it isn't so simply 'cause there a lot of curves that need to be group).

Anyway, can you tell me something about this front add-on at the bottom? Do you like it?

great job with it.. are you going to do the interior too?
just wondering why you have modified it instead of using the original shapes?

i'm actually using rhino to do some of the interior parts with mine since maya is a piece of SXXT when it comes to complex fillets.

good luck rendering it well, hardest part.

07-24-2005, 06:49 PM
Wow, respect, it's just too nice to see. Great curves and clean topology.

unfortunately, it was modeled by rhino not by Maya, I haven't seen anyone modeled that well in Maya. it's quite frustrating thing to see.

in total3d.com there's a tutorial about the same car like yours. Did you make that tutorial or did you learn from it?

To model an industry vehicle , NURBS is almost a must to create good quality. but it's too difficult to do. I am fighting now in Maya.

Cheers. keep it up.

Dias
08-04-2005, 08:07 PM
No, I haven't wrote any Nurbs tutorial and I learn Rhino by myself. :)

Dias

I'm exporting nurbs surfaces and then set up MR Tesselation, it works great.

Ah, I use STEP & IGES for exporting from Rhino to Maya.

Very fine modelling! This was one of the work that inspired to start with NURBS instead of poly. I'm fairly good with NURBS now but the filleting work is so hard!

I wonder if you actually use the Fillet or FilletEdge function or you manually fillet most of your edges? That's because filleting is the worst thing to be done especially on complex edges but everything on your model looks just fine.

Thanks Dias, I've watched the whole video and most of the techniques I have known. The only trouble I am having is to fillet where 4 edges meet together. Nevermind about it, I'll get my problems fixed soon. :)

By the way, may I know how it is possible for me to get the background? Is it just a HDR map? I'm very interested in such map where it blends so well together with the floor.

Keep us updated with more renders. ;)

racer_f50, do you think that Ralliart is a bad idea? Which brand do you want me to use? :wavey:
For realism & accuracy, it's probably best not to use Ralliart because they don't make any parts for BMWs. (I'm just picky like that for my own works. most people would never notice)
Some companies which tune BMW Z4s are AC Schnitzer (http://www.ac-schnitzer.de/englisch/index.html) and Hamann. (http://www.hamann-motorsport.de/index_start.php)

There are of course more, but those are the first 2 that came to my head.

Don't mean to make a big deal, just want this to be the best it can be, and it's already close to perfect:love:

Dias, great modling job. Really impressive. I would however suggest to try a different rendering approach then the so often used hdri. Maybe a fancy studio setup would be nicer?

Another question is, Im not so experienced with rhino, and wondering if there is any good tutorials you could suggest?

Thanks.

Dr. Ira Kane
09-10-2005, 09:16 AM
So are the render times high Dias ? I remember modeling NURBS car some time ago and it was pretty heavy to render, polys were much more efficient, but of course they're less accurate.

Dias
09-10-2005, 05:27 PM
Morbid Angel:

I thought about this too, photografic studio would be look much better. In this days I'll try different light setup. :)

Dr. Ira Kane:

Render times are ok. I mean, the longest one was that wheel wich took about 30min because it's full of blured shaders. The other renderings don't exceed 15min. :)

I'm going to replace that HDRI with photographic studio setup I'm working on because in this way I can create some advance lighting (another reason is because that HDRI is damn heavy, 40MB, MR is going out of memory very easy).

or that white on white clay looking shader? with some very light blurred shadows.

i read somewhere you do a domelight and some white surfaces to reflect the light?

basicly how did you do the shader? and get those smooth shadows? did you use raytracing or shadow map...

thanks..
if you know of any tut for that lemme know
thanks again

cool progress there man,i really like it.
btw, could you please render an image off the back window?i mean around it...with a little fixed anti-aliasing?
anyway...Keep going:thumbsup:

I'll use a lot of AA in final renderings so don't worry. :)

If I remember correctly, for the screen you linked I've used a simple Lambert with few Area Lights (Raytracing Shadows on) and FG with environment color in camera. For last renderings I've generated dome direct lights to simulate sun lights. :)

Here are some test:

Thanks guy

Well, I don't know how many hours I was working on this project, some month in free time. If I have to do it again, I think that 10 days would be enough.

Here is a wheel, what do you think about it?

The lights were very painfull, there are all modeled. :hmm:

Here are some prefinal renderings, tell me what do you think (I've added a little noise in Photoshop).

This is really amazing, I love the ralli-art exhausts on the BMW!

I think a Z4 M-Powered version would look very similar to something like this! Any chances of seeing what's under the hood? :)

makes it look more real..

Great work, you are making progress by leaps and bounds :)

one question, any tutorial u know about this type of rendering, i mean putting a car in a 2d scene or HDRI?

I know things theoratically, still working on my new car model, and i plan to do final renderings like this.

Any tutorial, or a small illustration, how i can achieve this thing.

Thanks for reply :)

As far as my modeling tecnique concerned, well, it's difficult to explane. On first pages you can see some wire screen, and try to see this link:

http://www.carbodydesign.com/software/rhino-tutorials.php

And for HDRI, as I've explaned pages before, I've simply used Maya's IBL and Use Background plane. :)

Great model ! It looks fantastic , but I have one critics. Your background photos are quiet blured and car is rendered sharp. If you sharpened photos, it will be look more realistic. It is only little help, for make it bit more realistic. :)

I mean this, this is your image image with blured map.
http://img470.imageshack.us/img470/5904/z4prefinal30py.jpg

and there is background more sharpen
http://img470.imageshack.us/img470/129/z4prefinal42qb.jpg

and mabye you use some color and glow efgfect like this
http://img470.imageshack.us/img470/6760/z4prefinal68jv.jpg

It is only my idea, keep on rocking :wavey:

Argh, I like the last "glow" version, how did you do that? :bounce:
Seriously, I can't find any glow filter inside Photoshop. -_-'

For the second one, well, yeah, I think it looks much better. In the first picture I've blured the car a little to make it similar to background, but I see that Sharpen filter works very well.

Thank you for your help :)

the glow effect is usually achieved by duplicating the base layer, then blurring the top layer (a lot), making it either "screen" or "overlay" and then playing with the opacity of the layer.

rawwad
11-05-2005, 09:52 AM
I glad you like it. :D Yes in Photoshop are some glow filters which are very useful. And I also use technique which descibe mihkeltt. But it only little help, as a I said.

The last one is really too blurred!it seems a picture from marriage photo album!:)

anywhay that effect is given overlaying a blurred layer of the picture on the same picture, the effect in this case is too heavy in my opinion.(sovrapponi due layer uguali,e quello superiore sfuocalo un po con gaussian blur e rendilo trasparente intorno al 50%,o di pių o di meno a seconda dell'effetto che vuoi)

i think you should use alpha channel to blur only the car without tricks, just some gaussian blur, but just a bit to make the car fit with the background!

excellent modeling texturing and everything

but didn't you notice that in almost all of your pics the car is atleast two times as big as it should be.

compare the size of the tires with the ground patterns and you'll get an idea what i mean.

only exception is z4_29.jpg :)

work on the scaling and the pics will look 10 times as good!

keep it up!

you should be very expierenced in Rhino.

You have exceptional skills at hard surface modeling. Your model is one of the best I've seen in terms of cleanliness. Overall your composites are very good as well but they aren't as good as your modeling skills. The only crit I have is to work on your compositing - the model is fantastic.
