View Full Version : WIP: Cactus
I am going to be using Messiah for this project so I thought I'd make a WIP thread and document my flounderings.
I'm pretty happy with the model. Now to move on to textures and rigging. . .

That reminds me soooo much of Chaplin in "Shoulder Arms" when he was disguised as the tree (see attachment).

It looks really good. Can't wait to see it moving.

Here is a pic of the darktree I made to simulate the "decay" areas you see in this type of cactus.
Here is what the shader looks like rendered in Messiah.

Renders pretty slow but. . . I think this might work.http://www.eggington.net/%7EWegg/WIP/5.jpg

You can put that one in the gallery and show the shaderflow myman....
It is a Darktree. . . Messiah's shaders scare the bajeesus out of me.

Little more realistic colors.

Really? In fact it seems a lot easier then the DarkTree Interface to me. But I did only take a quick look at DarkTree, then got quickly scared away a few years ago.
I can see that there are CLEAR advantages to using Messiah's built in
shaders over Darktree if Messiah were your only tool. But I often have
to work in Lightwave, Animation Master and Max. The beauty of Messiah
is that it plays nice with others and allows you to render your
animation in all the major rendering platforms. Darktree allows you
to procedurally texture in all the major rendering platforms. In my
mind they work perfectly together. They should buy each other out and
be. . . ProjectTree. pmDT.
Small rotation. (http://www.eggington.net/%7EWegg/WIP/Rotation.mov) I can see that I am going to have some issues with shimmering on the spikes. I might try some motion blur and higher AA.

That thing is downright prickly!
Now let's see the shaderflow!
I need some help getting my head around this thing!
I am using DARKTREE! The shader flow for DT is totally different. See!|

This is revenge for me not reading those production notes on Shot 8 isn't it David. . .
I need to fix the shoulders. . . http://www.eggington.net/%7EWegg/WIP/8.jpg
Another little test render.

Very nice, indeed. Any animation tests?

I had to hand the animation off to Raji (My partner in crime) as I have this other job that requires my attention at the moment. I'll post something when it starts looking half way decent.
Here is what it ended up looking like in the end.

How did you do the paper? Dynamics? Rock on dude. :buttrock:

Absolutely Cool!
Do us all a favor and put that wonderful piece in the gallery ASAP!
The bottom of the newspaper was done with dynamic bones but we could never find a solution for the top that worked the way we wanted so Raji hand animated it.

Very nice work Billy! By the way, did you use Meshpaint or Random Cloner for the needles?
Random Cloner.
I don't think Mesh Paint is out yet. That does look pretty slick. Great fur solution for a program that doesn't have fur. . . YET!
