View Full Version : Character: Mech robot
WarlockXKZ 08-04-2002, 06:07 AM Hi, first of all, I would like to mention that i've read the New Gallery Forum Rules, but I don't understand the part where you mention what kind of criticism you are looking for when posting here. Since it's a finished image, i don't think i'll be changing anything, unless it's crucial. So please forgive me if I'm doing anything wrong and please point me my mistake. :)
Well, a little information on the image, as required on the new rules:
This image was made for a local contest and the topic was Robots. I made this model using box-modelling in 3ds max 4.2, with heavy use of MeshTools Scripts. Done some little correction like contrast, brightness and sharpened a little in photoshop. My machine is a Pentium II 400 MHz.
As I mention above, I'm not sure what criticism I'll receive since it's finished, but I'll take serious any critic made on my image, at least for improve my next images.
PS: sorry about my english, don't be surprised if wrote something wrong :)
Enough talk here is my image.

Very good WarlockXKZ!
Love the bump map, and good lighting... creating an interesting atmosphere.
However this mech to me looks like a statue, or mantle piece.. were you going for that?
In any case, good stuff! Did you win the contest?

Hi there,
Thank you for the compliments :)
About the mech looking like a statue, I didn't want it that way, but looking again my image I agree with you. I don't know, maybe I'll pose him better to see if this can be fixed, but can't send another version to the contest, unfortunally.
Actually, I don't know if I'm gonna win the contest because the voting part has not began yet, but i'm optimistic about it.
Thanks agains for your post :)

Hey, by following your suggestion, i did setup the shadow to be more visible. I think it's way better than the first one in this aspect, thank you for critic. :)
About it's pose, I did try to move his legs, arms and such, but it's design make the posing job extremelly difficult for me, and I couldn't make him look better in this way, so I think that it will have to continue in this pose. And I figured out that I won't animate him for now.
I'm posting the new version (with improved new shadows) to see if you guys like this one better than the first, so I can replace the first post. Please tell me you opinion.
I really apreciated all comments you guys made, thank you. :)

it looks cool. can you send some profile shot like from left and front shots?
from what I can see the legs seems kinda thin compare to the body. might be the perpesctive view tho.

Glad you liked.
Actually his legs are really thin, but I don't think it's that much out of proportions. I rendered 2 profile views of the model, so you can see it more clearly.

This is the first time I model a mech. I think these contests helps you a lot to make things you would never thought about modelling, like this mech in my case. :hmm:
Again, thank you for your comments :)

good lighting, but that's way too bumpy on the mech man!!!

The modelling is great, nothing to crit here.
but I'm a bit tired by this look of mechs...
Nearly everyone who models a mech models it with 2 legs, 2 cannons, perhaps missile batteries and thats it.
your one looks a bit like the "werwolf" from C&C3 - Operation Tiberian Sun.
but this is just my humble opinion, modelling is great, like I said before

No headed robot... interesting.... :)
Like the modeling IMO you could use a different texture, I dont know if its camufage or rust :)
good work

The bumpy texture was intencional and I even enhance it a little more in photoshop, btw :)

Thanks :)

I know that it's design looks repetitive and common, like you said, but I hadn't much time to create a cooler design. I know there is no excuse for it ;) but I really want to focus on modelling, texturing, all the technical stuff, since I'm still learning 3ds max. :hmm:

Thanks
I am thinking about making another texture for the mech, but not soon, though.
And the current texture is a mix between a camouflage and rust.
One more time, thanks for your comments :wavey:
