when you're using a textures plane (rather than viewport backgrounds) you will have to up the texture resolution. this is on the last page of the texture settings (or if you're using the AM the first page).

u mean the dpi of the images? or size of the images?
how much dpi do u use normaly for a character modeling?

sorry i got it wrong with the first page in the am. it's still in the illumination tab. at the bottom you'll see Texture Preview size. there you can choose how high resolution your texture will appear in viewport. for what you want go with something closest to the resolution of the original texture. of course if the original texture isn't very high resolution then you can't hope to get more detail out.

using the viewport background instead of a texture plane can be better because it's always the resolution of the original image, and it doesn't appear in the perspective view, however that's not always desirable.

as for dpi etc, that's not relevant here as we're not dealing with print. instead resolution in this case is purely the pixel dimensions of the image.
