View Full Version : Colliding Particles??
jonathan161 02-02-2002, 09:27 PM I need particles from the same particle shape to not collide, i was wondering if u could do it with out a script or expression??
I tried connecting a radial field to the geometry that is instanced and then connecting that to the particles but this does not work! I have realflow and starting to try and learn that but is there anyway inside of maya to do this?
thanks in advance!

well, i thought that maya automatically had the particles collide with themselves. If you mean you want the particles to collide with an object, you select the partcles and then shift select the object they will collide into then go into dynamics and find the make collision option under particles or something.

Its not possible in Maya..
You need to use the Radial trick
do you need them not to collide with eachother?
or not to collide with another object?
and if you don't mind me asking what for?......
is it some sort of abstract animation?....
just curious...

I am trying to recreate the scene in "the mummy" when all the scarabs flow down the slopes and flow around and over objects! It working pretty nicely but the instanced geometry (scarabs) flow through each other. I need them to not collide as if they were intelligent :) I cant get the radial trick to work as there is only 1 particle shape.
So any suggestions???
thanks in advance!!!!

i once did a project for an infomertial, it had cg and it was about blood cells flowing inside of the vains...
the way i went about it was by creating a particle flow and then instancing the cells to the particles, ( and guess what) i had the same problem, so i thought of two things,
the first was to make less particles and therefore making sure that the space beetwen them was enough so that they wont look like they crossed each other.
the seccond was to make lots of particles and add motion blurr
But i gues that you want alot of particles. so i would think that the best way it so fake it,
the shot where you see all of them from the top is all just a bunch of particles instanced (doesnt matter if they cross each other) because then you add motion blurr and it fakes it.
But then on another shot you see them up close and you work hard on them not crossing each other especially the animals on the foreground ( i would think its best to animate those first ones)
so then people dont see or notice the intercrossing of particles, because on the CU they are focusing on the objects on the first plane ( wich are animated) and therefore not intercrossing.... and on the FS there is motion blur wich lets you see mainly the specular highlight of the objects so you cant tell that they are intercrossing
hope that helps
Sincerely
