Not sure exactly what you're looking for. Traditional art skills are very helpful. Understanding hue, value, saturation, color relationships. Here's some info that might help.

Textures can go a long way over geometry. In the first Toy Story, the chase scene at the end down the street consists of many houses. The houses were basically boxes with great texturing. Very low poly counts.

Also, by using a Wacom tablet in photoshop, you can paint some pretty great textures. Learn to understand transparency and different layer types such as multiply, saturations, soft light, hard light, etc. A mouse will work too, but Wacom tablets are very intuitive and fast.

A book that I found helpful is

Digital Texturing and Painting (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0735709181/ref=pd_bxgy_img_2/102-8362788-4821764)

Procedurals also work quite well for creating controlled randomness in a scene. And, if UVW mapping is difficult for a certain object, procedurals really come in handy. Or a combination of alpha mapped bitmaps and procedurals.

Oh, another thing. Have some idea of how you are going to texture the objects before you model them incase this effects the geometry. But don't worry about texturing until the modeling is finished...for the most part. Then, once your scene is composed, texture the scene as a whole, thinking about Gestalt (http://www.dictionary.com/cgi-bin/dict.pl?term=Gestalt), and not so much individual objects.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Baaron

You might give this site http://www.3rddimensiontutorials.com/Texturing.html a try. There seems to be a lot of texturing tutorials on it, haven't had a look at them so don't know what they're like.

Hope this helps,
Glen.
