View Full Version : Best rendering for pal?
Oren Ben-Tov 08-03-2002, 08:26 PM I am in the process of rendering my short movie for screening, in pal systems, festivals and so and so...
What is the best way to get the best results in the render:
1. which filter to use in the anti-aliasing : area or video filter?
2. How do i get rid of all the disturbances and fliciring of small lines
or other deatails in textures?
3. Is it better to render to fields , and will it take twice the time?
4.And why does the shadow almost allways flicker in Max even if I turn the shadow map size to 3000?
Thanks all in advance :)

shalom Oren Ben-Tov :)
well...
1. video
2. turn on SUPER SAMPLEING in material editor
3. it's better if you want very smooth motion, not recomended
for character animation in a fixed camera situation.
4. coz it's shadow map! :)...use raytrace , or try soft shadow with
bios @ 0.3 (most of the time a 0.0 bios make shaodows flickering)

Just some questions about anti aliasing-
I always just left the antialiasing on the default area... I'd never thought of changing it...
Do most people use video? Why should we do this? it seems a little blurry..
Ive just been testing them all... Does anyone use any others? there are heaps... are they there for specific porposes? I sort of liked the look of catmull-rom.

Shokran ila_solomon :)
Most of my movie there are fixed cameras so I guess Ill not use fields.
I cant use raytrace cuz it takes for ever to render them :hmm:
and I got 12 days to finish 10000 frames:wip:
phyle hi
I think you use video filter to get smoother results on t.v screens
so this is why it blures alot of the antialaising, but probebly you wont have flickiring edges like in other hard filters.

HOLY SHIT DUDE, 10,000 frames is like a few many "O" hundred!
i am only just starting out and to me that seems like a whole lot.
what is the movie about any way??? looks cool from seeing that picture!

The story basically is about Bernie the window cleaner dude thats falls in love with a women across the window, its a romantic comedy :)
Its going to be about 6-7 min long, its my final project in my college.
to answer some questions here
antialiasing-what may look blurry on a monitor may infact look ok on a video monitor, as often the standard antialising is too sharp...area certainly is...
shadow flicker - try giving the shadow more samples, and reduce the bias as ila_solomon suggested. Also reduce the scene/light ratio so you are getting the most out of your shadow map area...sometimes optimising your light size/coverage for just the area you need shadows in and using another light for another area can hugely speed up render times as well as keeping shadows clean..oh and omni/spots are more problematic in shadows than directs...
also a tip for telly is avoid overly bright colours as this causes bleed/flickering problems on ...knock bright colours back by 5-10% and this will help a lot and you wont notice it :) watch your speculars etc are not overbright as well...less is more in this case...
