Hi all,

Just got Animate 5b...looks amazing, however I am getting regular crashes (just messiah to complete machine bomb) whilst I do the tutorials - I'm using it standalone whilst I learn. They seem pretty random, once when spliting a bone, once when adding a point to flew, once when clearing the scene....Just wondering if I might be doing something wrong or if there might be something with my setup..I'm guessing that others cannot be getting anything like the number of crashes I am getting or CGtalk would be on fire! My setup is as follows; Animate 5b, Windows 2000 SP4, pentium 4, loads ram, Quadro 900XGL video card (that works well after the kind chappies at PMG told me how to configure it!)...

Any help much appreciated as I really want to get going!!!

David

I think that most crashes in m:a 5b are related to replacing a scene, i.e. something gets wonky when you load a new scene to replace an old one. For the moment (until pmG fixes that), it's probably best if you exit m:a before loading a new scene.

Hi,

Thanks for replying so soon! I've just started up m:a 5b from fresh and tried doing the 'Sliders Intermediate' tutorial......just as I added the 15th or so bone and ...Crash! - So frustrating!!

Any other clues?

David

PS I'm also using a Wacom Tablet....could this be the cause?

Hmm, I don't know about that. The crash is probably related to adding the bones too quickly rather then using the tablet (according to the yahoo list there were some issues with tablets, but no crashes). Maybe it's best if you report the bug to the tech support.
I agree it's a bit frustrating to have a new software and being plagued by frequent crashes. I got my version of m:a also only recently and encountered some problems as well, so maybe the guys at pmG just need some more time to make things more stable.

I thought it might be a 'pen adding items too quickly' - maybe a hesitant double press....being a newbie!! - so I tested this theory by adding loads of child bones really quickly using the pen in a hesitant manner!!!!!....no crash. I just don't get it......it's not like I'm stressing the software!

Any ideas Suricate or anyone else?

Are others having these random crashes with m:a 5b ???

Don't fret, this was happening to everybody at first.

For those of you that have encountered that "first crash" when trying to render,
just start messiah, shut it down, and then restart it again. That should fix
the problem. If not, this is what I posted earlier:

Hmm... seems like a fairly common problem, and I can see exactly how it
could slip through the beta. It appears that the problem may stem from
having no initial messiah4.cfg config file.

Try this:

1. locate the messiah3.cfg file on your system
2. copy that file and rename the copy to messiah4.cfg
3. start messiah and then shut it down
4. restart messiah and create a sphere object and light
6. set your illumination for direct lighting with no GI
7. render

============================================================

Also, if you're experiencing problems with crashes when clearing/replacing
scenes, try going to Setup to perform those ops. This should minimize the
problem while we track it down.

Since you don't have studio, I would just load a sample scene and see if that works without crashes.

I believe there is another method, of just opening messiah and then just closing without doing anything. It has something to do with pref files or something getting rewritten or created and because it was crashing on you it never was successfully close and so on and so forth.

Hope this helps,

Thanks tjnyc, so far, since deleting all the configs(!) it seems to be behaving very well..infact not a crash since and I would have expected a few by now so thanks for the tip!

PS Thanks also suricate!
