for some reason mental ray is no longer a rendering option does anyone know how to bring it back .... i tried a reinstall

Like some other parts of Maya (Maya Fur and Maya Live) Mental Ray is an integrated plugin. So something may have happened to stop the plugin loading automatically. Go to:

Window > Settings/Preferences > Plugin Manager

And tick the Load and Autoload checkboxes next to the Mayatomr.mll plugin.
