I've been learning the basics of Max and Photoshop for the past few months, and here's my first finished model. It's just over 3000 polys and uses three 256ers. I kind of wish I'd used a 512 for the chest and legs now cos the textures aren't very sharp. A few issues with the seams. Maybe I overdid the scratches on the armour too... But it's close to my original sketches so I'm pretty happy with it.

Oh yeah, to explain: he's some biker dude in a post-apocalyptic prison colony (he's pinched the armour). My next task is to learn to make a rig and then I can start posing him in an Action Man stylee... I'm having a lot of fun learning all this stuff if you couldn't tell!

Crits are very welcome.

Ta, Nick.

Is no-one going to offer any crits?
As a relative newbie I would really appreciate any comments or suggestions...

The only thing I can see is that his neck is a bit too long, pull his head down abit into the armour, and pull up his shoulders (deltoids?) a little. He's got very muscle-y arms, but quite wussy shoulders at the mo.

I like the scratches on the armour, I'd keep them, maybe add some dirty patches, some blood, just to show he had to fight to get it.

Great work

Heya,

Thanks for the tip. Other people always see stuff that you don't notice yourself. I'll see what I can do about combatting his Giraffe complex.

Well the model is real nice. Especially for first made model.

It looks like as if the torso is way too long and the crotch should be highered a bit. (which means his legs will become longer)

But this is only my opinion..

A design tip though.. He could use armpads. in common sense it would be worthless to carry that piece of metal if you didn't used as many function as you could. And it would look real cool to have armpads to.

(and you could really try to use less polys for that kind of "simple" models)

Cheers mate.

thanks for the suggestions.

Actually, I realised that the model is leaning slightly forward in the first render, which would explain why the neck looks overly long (I tweaked it a little anyway) and why the crotch might look a little off. Anyway, he's wearing phat pants which could lead to groinal confusion.:)

As for armpads, I'm going for the whole scavenger look. He could only find the chest armour. No arm protection for this fella.

the model looks cool man, however i think you should take a look at the fallout series by interplay if you want a sick scavenger look, just a suggestion:airguitar

Thanks for the suggestion. I only modelled the basic form of the character. But I might go back and add packs and a utility belt etc. at a later date. Either that or I'll start again from scratch...

That looks really cool for a first model, well done.
Only area that really needs tweaking in my opinion is the legs and feet.

Try puffing out the 'ball' and heel of the foot a bit more and tuck in the base of the ankle to define the shape a bit better. Also, even though the pants are sposed to be a bit baggy, it would probably look a bit nicer if you scaled the knee in a bit, this will exaggerate the thigh and calf muscles.
Also, whats the go with the knee joint. If its the main shadow area on the texture its too low, if its the higher one its too high. If you raise the whole crotch/hip section so that the white torso section below the armour is halved in height, the top leg shadow would probably be about right for knee height.

With game characters, it's good to exaggerate the length of calf and wrist sections slightly, as their animations have more character and they hold a more purposeful stance.

Goodluck with your next model :)

Thanks very much for your tips. I've just finished modelling my second character and will definitely take into account what you said about the feet and knees.

I'm pretty annoyed tho, cos I got RSI in my right arm from using my mouse at an awkward angle. Which means I can't start texturing my new model for at least a few days. Shouldn't be typing this either, really.

Can't go skate or play guitar or do any other stuff I like. :annoyed: Will just have to read a bunch of tutorials till it gets better. Been meaning to learn some more about texturing for a while anyway...

Anyway, thanks for everyones' help with the model. Really appreciate the crits.

For your 1st finished model, I think it looks great!

Just an opinion.. He seems a little to round... Hopefully that comment makes sense to someone out there..
